But if its a clean groove done with a sharp implement I think you can repair it without going to the paint shop.

My car wash guy said it's a close call whether the entire hood needs to be repainted or if I can get a good bodyshop guy to "heat" the damaged area and then somehow fill the scratch with new paint and then polish (or something like that).

Use a sharp tool like a needle nose implement and gradually fill the scratch.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

6 inch scratch on my hood, way too deep to buff out. Not sure exactly when or where it happened, but it 'aint pretty. I'm really ticked off about it, but there's not much I can do. Some people can be just so damn disresepectful. Any idea of the cost to re-paint the hood?

POST 2Original post

Sorry to hear about that... Porsche dealers sell a scratch repair pen with the exact color of your car. When applied by a professional hand, it could work...

POST 3Original post

That sucks so f'ing bad, some lowlife loser trying to get back at the 'man'.

POST 4Original post

Paint pen won't work on a big scratch. There might be someone in your area who does scratch repair, but you are probably in for a repaint on the hood. Sorry to hear that. check with your insurance agent, they can usually tell you how much your insurance will go up if you claim it, and you can do a tradeoff analysis vs. paying out of pocket.

POST 5Original post

well I don't know that I would go the paint pen route first. But if its a clean groove done with a sharp implement I think you can repair it without going to the paint shop. Call Tower Paint give them you VIN number and they will send you a can of your P-car's paint. Tape off the sides of the scratch. You can then make a sanding pencil out of some 1000+ sanding paper (glue a hole punch side piece to the back of the pencil eraser) and smooth the "crater" carefully. clean it out and then spray some of the tower paint into a cup. Use a sharp tool like a needle nose implement and gradually fill the scratch. Wait until it cures fully and sand over the paint with a higher count sand paper until the surface is flat with the orginal paint next to the scratch. Follow with a fine polishing wax, sealant and wax. total cost $50. Or you can spend $500=$800 reshooting the hood.

POST 6Original post

GBG, That really sucks. What part of Westchester was that? I live in Scarsdale for a few years... Rob

POST 7Original post

Hate to hear that. What goes through their heads? Plain mean.

POST 8Original post

what is with these f'n people out there. If anyone catches someone doing this, they should bring them back to their house hostage and let everyone on this board who got keyed know the address for some payback. Very sorry to hear about your experience - hope the loser drops dead....slowly

POST 9Original post

very sorry would like to catch someone doing it.It would be there last time.

POST 10Original post

Totally a big bummer!! There should be some pretty good body/paint shops up in your area.

POST 11Original post

Man, that sucks!!!!!!!!! It is a crying shame that this type of thing happens. It's getting so that it doesn't pay to own anything nice anymore, because someone will try to f**k it up! I just hate this Sch*t! My condolences!

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. Appreciate the genuine concern and anger, it helps. My car wash guy said it's a close call whether the entire hood needs to be repainted or if I can get a good bodyshop guy to "heat" the damaged area and then somehow fill the scratch with new paint and then polish (or something like that). I'm not a DYI guy, so I'm not even gonna attempt to deal with it on my own. I plan to bring the car to a few local bodyshops and hear what they say. Can't be good. Riad-- I live in Chappaqua, which is probably not all that different than your neck of the woods, so be careful. You never know where ******** may live.

POST 13Original post

That sucks I can't believe people do this. Buncha f'in losers. Hope you can get it fixed up relativlely cheap.

POST 14Original post

Aww, GBG, terrible to hear that! it really depends how deep the scratch is, take it to a good bodyshop. If they can heat it up and paint and then wetsand, all the better. usually they have to repaint the entire damaged panel and then some of the adjacent panels in order to match it all up the people who do these things are usually cowards, so i try to park in well lit areas with many pedestrians and not too close to other cars.

POST 15Original post

The shop here in Abq say's you can not touch up a small area b/c of the metallic nature of the paint. I have an Arctic Silver car. According to him you must repaint the whole panel. Estimate $279 plus paint and clearcoat for hood. P.S. I am very sorry for your loss.

POST 16Original post

A word of advice as I used to work in a body shop when I was in college. I was just a helper. Unless you have a lot of experience DO NOT do this yourself. I am serious because you will screw up the panel in a huge way and you will NEVER be happy with it. Call the dealer and who he recomends to do autobody work on Porsches. Porsches have a multi-step (as do most cars today) clear coat paint job. You will NEVER MATCH IT YOURSELF. Find a guy who does high-end cars. There is a guy in NJ where I live and all he does is Mercedes, Porsche, Ferrari, BMW, etc.... I had a tree branch fall on the fender of my Audi and it caused 2K worth of damage. I was freaking as the car was all of 1 month old. Anyway they repaired it and you cannot tell it was ever hit. The work was that good. I found him from the dealer. Call around to different dealers and ask who they recomend. Good luck.

POST 17Original post

The problem is that the scratch is on your hood. If you are a perfectionist, don't even consider a touchup on your hood because you won't be happy with the result.

POST 18Original post

GBC,, These guys hit it right on the head (Rennlist rules!!) Touch-up or any other scratch repair system is not going to look like OEM. Good news is that Seal Grey matchs up good on panel repairs. I spray it at least one a week in Sikkens, good advise on asking the dealer as they usaully know the best guys.

POST 19Original post

I know it's already been said but whoever did that should be hung upside down from a tree and left that way for 6 hours or more. I feel your pain. And BTW we are neighbors (I live in Armonk) so I hope the same thing doesn't happen to me.
