I have used the clip on once for a bottle of water, and it does work.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I also put one of these in my '98 528i, which has what BMW alleged were cupholders in the dash but didn't work worth a darn.
Hi
I am considering a 996 purchase and it may be 1999 - 2001 model. Not that this will make or break the 'deal' when I see the right car, but does anyone have any pics of the 1999-2001 and/or 2002 - 996 cupholders?
Thanks in advance ... from what I have heard/read the cupholders in the first 996's just 'clipped' onto the air vents?

Mark,
Personally the cup holders in the pre 02 are disgusting. Dont know what the interior design team was even thinking. The 02+ holders are integrated into the dask under the central air vents whereas pre 02 they were an option but might have been standard equipment after a certain date? Someone might correct me. At the end of the day as you said not a deal breaker

2000 996s, at least my C2, do not have cupholders. Having seen the cupholders on newer 996s and Boxsters, they strike me as pretty cruddy. I added an aftermarket one from

and have been VERY happy with this one. I also put one of these in my '98 528i, which has what BMW alleged were cupholders in the dash but didn't work worth a darn.
Just choose a 996 that you like and add an aftermarket cupholder. It will work better than the cupholders in the newer Porsches anyway.
rpatt: I like those. I really like the fact that if they spill, its only the floor matts that suffer. I have the 01' cup holders in my car that take up one of the din spots. I keep threatening to remove them as the few times I have used them, they always spill onto the shifter, etc....
Don't bother with the stock ones. Get the Ultimate cupholder, it sits on the passenger floor and it's all stainless. It looks great and more important "it works"
rpratt, that link looks great

I am usually so "anti-non-oem" but these look very discreet and the wort possible scenario spill-wise is the carpet.
Thanks all for your feedback. ArthurK, I will email you direct, we'll catch up soon.

I had the clipped on air vent cupholders as a dealer accessory on my 2000 C4, and they were, candidly, worthless. Just a personal opinion. On my 2004, they are integrated into the dashboard; pull it out for one, pull it out further for two. I have also had condensation drip down into the HVAC controls, and this resulted in a warranty claim. I suppose they realize it is a flawed design. My '02 GTI 337 had a similar set up with similar results. On my '04 R32, VW has given up the dash mounted cupholders in favor of cutouts on the center console. Not quite as convenient, but safer.
I think there is absolutly nothing wrong with the clip on cup holders other than estetics! On the other hand they are neat since they can be removed if you don't like them. I got mine so that I can have a cold bottle of water on my commute to the track!
I have the clip-on, and it is true they look a bit naff.
Our Golf has the ones that pop out the centre, and the are a bit of a menance about getting to the Hi-FI and in the way of the gear shift.
Another plus for the clip ons is they are just the rightr size to take my iRiver hard disk player, and the wiring into the Hi-Fi is out of the way. I can control the unit, see the screen and select tracks etc.
I have used the clip on once for a bottle of water, and it does work.

From this site I found the Ultimate Cupholder website. Could not order online so I called today. Spoke with Mike the owner and he just completed a new upgrade version that I bought (2) of. Nearly the same as the ones shown here, except they have pins that clip them to the carpet virtually anywhere, instead of sliding them under the center console. He will have them on the website in about a week. Thanks for the info from this post, I hated the cupholder I had.
99-01 pop out cupholders do work but they look like something out of a Camery. There are two rectangular holders that pop out. Older Audi A4 have the same cupholders.
02 are definitely attractive but they are too high and will block AC control when loaded with drinks.
997 cup holders are too flimsy and above glove box area.
Of the 3, I like 02-04 cup holders most. There are some holders on ebay that you can stick into the dash cubby hole. That's another option.
The aftmarket that fits in normal DIN space will only go in the top position with no NAV. You have to move everything else around. This is the same as pre 02 in dash pop out cupholders, but the aftermarkets will hold larger drinks. The bird automotive console has a single cupholder option, that is adjustable and will hold most anything. Total cost is >500 bucks, but overall the package is worth the money IMHO. I had two of his older 78 to 89 consoles and just got the one for 996. All are a pain to install, but they are really nice. I have no affiliation with Bird, other than I have paid him a bunch of money. They do have good support for installation. The console look like a factory option, color match and all. He advertises in Panorama and Excellence, but not sure if he is Rennlist sponsor. If he's not, I'm sure he would be it were suggested.
