Suggestion

If I read the 997 product information correctly the volt meter gauge on the left in a 996 has been replaced with an oil temp gauge in the 997.

Suggestion

As far as installing an oil temp indicator, if I were to do it, I would install a sensor inline and run the resistance wire to the cab and install a set of 3 small lights in the plastic cover that is at the bottom of the center console.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, I looked all over the forum... it looks like nobody has asked about installing a oil temp gauge on their 996s... Just wondering...

POST 2Original post

Yeah water temp only does so much--I too would like an oil temp --I guess to tap into a line going from a cooler and maybe some digital gauge somewhere hidden or not so hidden? who knows No need for the fast n furious pillar gauges!! Mike

POST 3Original post

Tell me why you would need an oil temp gaurge on a water cooler car? Seems to me that since the oil is cooled by the water in the engine, that as long as the coolant temp is right, the oil would be also.

POST 4Original post

Well with the large oil capacity, you would want to wait for the engine oil to be up to temp for optimal lubrication--just cause the coolant is 140 doesnt mean the oil is up to speed thru all passages and the like. I dont profess to be a mechanic or have any other extreme mechanical knowledge- Im just thinking out loud from what Ive read and my experiences. Also I imagine in racing conditions(DE and track events) oil temp would provide extra information on car's condition. Mike ps being supercharged you would want to know of the temps of engine fluids--coolant and oil

POST 5Original post

If I read the 997 product information correctly the volt meter gauge on the left in a 996 has been replaced with an oil temp gauge in the 997. I also question the need for oil temp due to the oil/coolant heat exchanger, but I guess you cannot have too much information. I did ask a mechanic how you would mount a sender for an oil temp gauge. You can do this aftermarket by removing the oil drain plug and screwing in the sender - but then it would be very low to the ground. He did not have an answer off the top of his head.

POST 6Original post

I have tested the temp of the oil at various times on my car, before and after the SC was installed. At all times, the oil temp only changed when the coolant temperature changed. Granted, knowing the exact oil temp would be nice, but I believe unnecsaary for our water cooled car even when tracking. I have never seen oil temperature in any car overheat when the cooling system is the correct temperature. As far as when you know the oil is warm enough..if the collant temp is at 180 defrees or higher, your oil is warm enough. As far as installing an oil temp indicator, if I were to do it, I would install a sensor inline and run the resistance wire to the cab and install a set of 3 small lights in the plastic cover that is at the bottom of the center console. This is a bat wing shaped piece that is easily removed. I would install a different resister on each light in an amount that would not allow enough voltage to illuminate the light until 3 seperate oil temps had been reached. The first light would come on at normal oil temp, the next at a higher range and so on. I currently use this batwing for an indicator light for the proper operation of my water pump for the aftercooler on the SC system.

POST 7Original post

That is the problem, there are no external oil lines to splice in a temp sender. At least not on a Boxster. There is an oil temp sender for the VarioCam. Maybe someone can figue out how to piggy back to that.

POST 8Original post

On the 3.4 engine there is a small socket head cap screw on the top of the driver's side cam tower on the rear of the engine. There is no function for this cap other than to keep oil from coming out the hole. You can remove it and replace it with a 14mm treaded adapter that you can connect a sending unit to. I use this location for the oil feed to my supercharger. I am sure that there is at least one, if not more plugs in the Boxter engine for purposed of getting to the oil flow. The 3.4 also has another access near rhe main pulley belt.

POST 9Original post

thanks for the info. another great educational experience on this board im buying Mike

POST 10Original post

OK Mike, if your buying, I may not be that far from you.......

POST 11Original post

I would like to do this as well........If anyone knows where to put the sending unit on 3.6 drop me a line

POST 12Original post

Dave where did u get your car from? I had one on order like that Seal Gray/Black red stitch??? Mike
