Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Hi all, Can someone help clear me up on the engine options for the 996s? Was the 3.6L only availible after 2002? and could you still buy the 3.4L? Or can you school me on the time line. Also which is prefered by most.

POST 2Original post

Pertaining to 996 Carreras only (not GT2, GT3 or Turbo) 1999-2001 3.4L only offered engine 2002-2004 3.6L only offered engine x51 performance package was an option on 3.6L only (I could be wrong) There are no "official" numbers to back it up, but the 3.6L seems to have worked out a few of the bugs that the 3.4L suffered from (cylinder sleeve detachment, porous engine block). Both engines are prone to the rear main seal (RMS) failure.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After 2004 what were the options?

End of the line for the 996: 997 3.6 997S 3.8

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I see, Of the 996s I have considered for purchase I was unclear as to the correct discriptions for the engine. I see now some of them have been listed for sale incorectly unless they my have had a replacement motor. thank you for the heads up.

POST 6Original post

It is rare but occasionally you will see a 1999-2001 (Mk I) with a 3.6 installed after an engine failure. Even less likely in the '99 because they had a throttle cable instead of drive by wire. You're not going to find any 2002-2004 (Mk II) cars with a 3.4L. There a few 996s with 997 3.8L motors transplanted into them (very rare).

What Marc stated above was true for the C2 only. The C4/C4s was offered as a 996 model. Tthe total naturally asperated offering for 2005 was: 997 C2 3.6L 997 C2S 3.8L 996 C4/C4S 3.6L 996 Targa (?) 3.6L
