Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In my 964, I use the guage regularly, very accurate.
Leading evidence: 'Use guage regularly, very accurate' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check dipstick' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

the for sure accurate is the dipstick, but i just check the electonic gauge and only check the dipstick on rare occassions (e.g.

When I check my guage when the engine's cold, the level is on the (very) high side.

Suggestion
I experimented with it and the dip stick extensively to check the oil consumption and 10 minutes worked very well on fully warmed up engine (to get consistent reading with the dip stick reading).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This may have been talked to death, but I couldn't find it in a search. When I check my guage when the engine's cold, the level is on the (very) high side. However, when I check it engine hot and engine off for 5 minutes, it registers on the (very) low side.
How accurate is this guage? In my 964, I use the guage regularly, very accurate. Is the 996 this accurate.
I don't want to beat a dead horse, if you can direct me to the thread, I'll gladly read it.
I think they are pretty accurate in general (mine is very accurate, '03 coupe). 5 minutes may not be enough for all the oil to drain back to get an accurate reading. I experimented with it and the dip stick extensively to check the oil consumption and 10 minutes worked very well on fully warmed up engine (to get consistent reading with the dip stick reading).
If that doesn't work, I can't think of a rational explanation (reading hi AND lo at diff times).
it does shift around one or two bars between first thing in the morning to after a day of driving let's say.
the for sure accurate is the dipstick, but i just check the electonic gauge and only check the dipstick on rare occassions (e.g. right after an oil change).
That's about what it is...probably more like 3-4 bars. You've answered my question. I'm probably not waiting long enough. Figuring 1 bar is only .25 liters, it's pretty tight so 2 bars probably should be expected.
Thanks!
Sounds a little odd to me too. I played around like Ahsai above, with about the same result (2003).
Mine reads lower cold, and "peaks" at about 10 minutes after shutting off a hot engine. Difference cold to hot is typically 2 bars.
Oh, I forgot to mention, if you shut down the engine when it's very hot (say right after spirited driving), wait for 10 minutes and measure, you WILL get a little higher reading both at the dipstick and the gauage (~1 to 2 bars higher, 1/8 inch higher on the dipstick) compared to the cold reading. This is probably due to oil expansion when the temp rises, I believe. Similar to what Jon996 experienced above.
I prefer to read the oil level in cold conditions, before starting the engine.
The dipstick and the board computer offers the same reading
After waiting 10 minutes the meassure is about two or three bars..
I changed the oil last month and I added 8,60 litter (with filter).
In cold always one bar below the maximun

Not certain, but I believe the oil level sensor is a self-heating thermistor.
Since the oil temperature varies in operation over a very wide range, the Kombi
instrument performs some calculation to correct the thermistor value against
temperature.
It's not a completely exact science.
