Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
BTW it was of course out of warranty by then and in Spain/Porsche Iberica (Porsche's 5th largest market), RMS is not covered under "good will" repair when warranty runs out.
Leading evidence: 'Replace yesterday' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'rms' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair when warranty runs out' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When I was talking to him over the phone, he didn't think it was the RMS, but rather a valve cover gasket...

If the engine needs to be replaced, does Porshe NA cover that in their "good will"?

Suggestion
The technician uses a tool to measure the concentricity of the crankcase.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Got rid of my SC and bought a 99 C2Cab with 48,xxx. Has small drip of oil by oil drain plug. Is this the dreaded RMS leak. If so will Porsche help me out and treat this as warrenty work?
-Rick
My 99 has the exact same leak. Bringing in to the dealer this weekend. When I was talking to him over the phone, he didn't think it was the RMS, but rather a valve cover gasket...
Thanks guys!
Carlos, what does b/w If & rt mean?
Any ideas whether Porsche will do any goodwill warranty work. This is my 4th Porsche - 2 brand new 2 used
My leak is at the front of the engine very close to the centerline when looking at the car from the back. Also very close to the oil drain plug. Just a small drip.
I understand that the RMS typical occurs before the 30K mile mark. Does this mean that mine has been going on for the last 19k+ miles? What is the cost of fixing the RMS short of a complete motor swap?
An RMS repair is about $800 if not covered by Porsche. The technician uses a tool to measure the concentricity of the crankcase. It is a pass/fail test - if you fail, new engine. If you are not under warranty, I would push for coverage as this is a manufacturing defect, not due to "wear & tear."
I feel lucky - my '99 is five years old, has nearly 26k and never had any problems whatsoever. I just had it fully tested at IRA Porsche before buying it (what a coincidence - they sponsor this site).
I'm horified hearing the stories from you guys having multiple RMS issues. I feel for ya.
I felt lucky till I hit 50k miles this past x-mass... didn't loose my RMS virginity until then, so nobody is out of the woods.
BTW it was of course out of warranty by then and in Spain/Porsche Iberica (Porsche's 5th largest market), RMS is not covered under "good will" repair when warranty runs out. Luckily I didn't need a new engine...so it seems. Others may not be so lucky unfortunately.
2002 c2 RMS @ 10k again @ 15K , the clutch got wet so new clutch and fly wheel. And it looks looks we have another winner @ 20K. Oh wait, I had intermediate shaft seal @ 10K and the cam solenoid seal @15K.
ALL COVERED buy warrenty The dealer service guys have been great! Never a problem with getting me in and the car fixed. I should go for a P car loaner next time.
I am a prospective pre owned 996 buyer thoroughly researching what I'm getting myself into. It seems you guys are very informed of this RMS issue. Can you estimate what percentage of 996s have RMS issues? In the case its not covered by a limited warranty that comes with a new car purchase, what are the options? If the engine needs to be replaced, does Porshe NA cover that in their "good will"?
Are there any other issues I should be worried about with a 99' or 00' 996?
