Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is the busiest forum, so I'm posting this here. I'm looking at portable GPS car units, to take from car to car. So far, the best one seems to be the Garmin Street Pilot 2620. Any opinions? TIA.

POST 2Original post

I have a Garmin Streetpilot III and I love it.

POST 3Original post

The Garmin 196 is great. Approx 1k. Comes with all the accessories. They just came out with the 296 color $1700 with voice prompts. Both are excellent units. I have a 196 that I fly with, then switch to land mode for turn by turn directions, and rerouting. Nice size screens. Both are capable of air, land and sea navigation. Look at http://www.sportys.com/gps/ they have a nice chart that compares the units. Steve

POST 4Original post

I like the Magellan Roadmate 700. It's about $1K online.

POST 5Original post

I have the street pilot III and absolutely love it! {pro with this is the battery ... allows you to use inside to find places that your about to drive etc, con is that it's not lightning fast routing.} My father has the 2610 and loves it. {con with this is no battery. pro is that it's very fast!} And ... {this is key!} My wife wanted to hate it because she's not big on gadgets, but she loves it too! The coverage is also excellent!

POST 6Original post

I have had the Garmin 2620 for about 3 months now and really like it. It is a must for me when I travel. Apart from portability, voice prompts, and touch screen, the 2620 has the entire USA map built in. Plug it in into a cigarrete lighter and you are good to go. It sells for about $1k. I had the Garmin at the same time that I was driving a loaner Cayenne with Nav, and I found that the Garmin got me home faster and better route than the Nav in the Cayenne. POST 7Original post

Can't speak for the 2620 but I know a number of people that have the Streetpilot III and love it. Pluses to this are that it can be transferred to another vehicle easily, can run on batteries if necessary and you can download a lot of data to it (once you have bought their high priced memory and USB adaptor). I have a GPS V. Simple, rugged, long battery life. More features than the Streepilot but with a smaller grey scale screen, less memory and no USB (read slow downloads). Both of the above are totally waterproof so for those that also own motorcycles (like me) or boats you can put it on this too without worrying about it. Finally, if you are looking for a a really geeky excuse to drive that car of yours check out this site... http://www.geocaching.com/ Barry

If you are comfortable with computers you might want to check out a pocketPC. I have a MY2000 996 Cab with the $17 aux. cable input adaptor (from Becker the Radio mfg.) and listen to Mapopolis mapping softwares directions, to Turn Left in 300 ft, over the cars radio sound system. At the same time the pocketPCs color Display is similar in size to the Garmin and the Mapopolis maps are available on-line for about $90/yr. Also this multi-function pocketPC plays over the radio in stereo 200-300 mP3s stored on the SD card at the same time and with the volume of the Mapopolis GPS set slightly louder than the pocketPC windows mobile media player I can listen to my favorite music and still hear the directions with the top down on the freeway. With the cost of the pocketPC($300),Becker Radio Aux. Cable($20) GPS Receiver($100), Mapopolis Software($100), 256mb SD Card($50) and pocketPC dashboard cradle($50) totaling 50% less than a dedicated GPS, I am really satisfied with this GPS solution not to mention using the pocketPC to wirelessly go on line from the airport or coffee shop. Including going on line from a coffee shop in New Orleans a couple of months ago to download a map of the city in less than 5 min and using it in the rental car to find the after hours club our favorite band was playing at after Jazz Fest. Another plus is there are a variety of cradles available for the pocketPC to use to securely hold the device on your dashboard, although Im still evaluating several to find the perfect one for my needs. There arent a lot of dashboard mount location choices for our cars. Joe

POST 9Original post

I tried a Pocket PC version some time ago and decided that I did not like it as much as a dedicated unit. Reasons for me were: 1. I was looking for a motorcycle application so the fact that it was not waterproof was a concern 2. Most of the routes that I negotiate are pre-planned routes that are designed to follow twisty back roads. As such the routes needed to go via many waypoints and I found that to set this up on the pocket PC version that I tried (TeleType) was a very tedious process. If you are just looking at something to go from where you are to a particular address or place then I think this would be an excellent solution. In fact I am half considering doing it anyway just for the color maps and the voice prompts (my GPS V just beeps) Barry

POST 10Original post

Your system does sound VERY nice. But on the $$ thing I just wanted to mention that Garmin re-man'd Street Pilot III's can be had for $490 complete.

POST 11Original post

Here's a link to the Garmin Streetpilot III from Amazon. $499 and free shipping. That's where I got mine. Streetpilot III From Amazon

Thanks a lot for the input, all. Street Pilot seems to be the way to go. Just found a new 2620 on E-Bay for less the $1K.
