Just increasing the amount of intensity you devote to your search doesn't change the facts, it just increases your frustration.

If the true market value for what you seek is out of your price range, you need to be honest with yourself and change your goal.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After 5+ months of searching, I have found nothing. Yes, there have been a few close calls, but nothing bought.
I know what I am looking for is slightly rare, but it's not impossible to find. I have seen many come and go.
1 seller's car had a salvaged title that I didn't find out about until the very last minute. No deal.
1 seller's car was misrepresented online, on the phone, and in person, and hugely failed a PPI, at which point, I was abandoned by him 400 miles from my house. (Yes, I wrote a post about this one.) No deal.
2 sellers were considering selling, but then decided to keep their cars. (You know who you are!) No deal.
1 seller admitted that I was the first to call him, told me he would hold the car for me, even rejected my offer to send him a deposit, and then sold it to someone else 2 days before I was scheduled to buy. (This was a fellow Rennlister.) No deal.
So here's my current mood...........I don't mean to sound like a whiner, or some complaining little bitch, but this is becoming such a waste of time. I check the rennlist classifieds, auto-trader, cars.com, ebay, and the dupont registry all DAILY. When I started, I was wiling to spend in the low 30's, then, after realizing that was unrealistic, I went to the mid 30's, then, the high 30's. Perhaps for the right car, now I could spend even in the low 40's......
My question is, how long is this going to take? At what point do I give up? Am I not doing something right? What's going on? Anyone wanna sell to me and upgrade?
I'm looking for a 1999, or even a 2000, 6-speed, 996 coupe, with aerokit. Any aftermarket upgrades would be a plus, but not a requirement. If it passes a PPI, I'm a happy guy.
At this point, I am starting to feel like I should have kept my 951...
Search ebay for completed auctions, there was a 24K mile greay 2000 with a factory aero kit and full carbon interior in florida about two weeks ago. He wanted 45K for it and I told him good luck. Nice enough guy, just though he was 5-6K over. If you are that hungry for one give him a call.
I've been having the same problem for about a month now but I guess I'm used to it. Almost every used sports car I've purchased has been a similar process to the one you describe. I'm also seeking a sporty looking yellow, red etc. early 996 w/ aerokit and it's not an easy process. The cars I've seen that were'nt roaches were priced outside the market or were low-option cars, others failed PPI, it's never easy. As for adding the kit later it seems rather prohibitively expensive to do so, but maybe I'm not looking hard enough...
Its a bitch.
Looking for a yellow C4 cab with aero kit myself - or even a C4S cab and its almost impossible if you have the usual "low milage", "CPO", "03+", "option X,Y, and Z" requirements.
Usually you end up finding something that is missing an essential piece of equipment - that is deadly expensive to add on (like heated sport seats or the aero kit itself).
*sigh*
;-)
I still don't understand why you don't just buy the perfect car sans aero and then add it. You are really cutting your nose to spite your face searching in the manner you are.
Sometimes it takes a little longer than you expect. I was lucky and ended up buying the first one I looked at. It had been for sale in the winter with no buyers at a high price. I caught the guy looking at an insurance renewal and payment. Made him an offer that I didn't think he would take and left with my 02!
The idea of getting a car without the aero kit and adding your own is not a bad idea.
I shopped for about 6 months with strict requirements while dealers laughed and then went sans-aerokit; adding those parts now. As soon as you let go of that requirement, good candidates will appear everywhere.
You have to remember not a lot of 99-00 cars were optioned with the Aero especially the 99's I don't think it was an option until midway through production. I agree with LVDELL.
I agree with the others -- go and get a 996 without the aerokit that is within your budget. You can add the aerokit later.
If you are on a really tight budget you can add the aerokit in stages -- get the sideskirts first then the front bumper then the rear spoiler.
I agree on the "just add later", BUT
The "missing" aero kit doesnt give you a lower price on the base car. And aero kit optioned cars dont cost much more - if at all. At least here in Europe.
Adding the aero kit later will thus cost you significantly more money than finding one on a otherwise perfect car.
Well I waited and looked for over 3 years before I found the right 996 for me. Just hang in there, it will happen. Most likely when you are not expecting it the car will find you.
monabaker --
You are wise to ask for counsel and are getting good advice here. If the true market value for what you seek is out of your price range, you need to be honest with yourself and change your goal. Hey, I'd love a TT for $50K and have no doubt that, if I look hard enough, I could probably find one. In a condition that would drain my enjoyment and $. Just increasing the amount of intensity you devote to your search doesn't change the facts, it just increases your frustration.
So, my suggestions just as they have been in your past postings...
-find the best 996 you can, ex-the Aero kit; and add it when you are able;
-or, set your sights on something different, where your money can buy a superior version of the car you seek.
