I don't understand why we pay taxes on trading something that is used (and for which taxes have been collected when it was bought new).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm in the process of buying a 996 cab and really like this one but I'm not sure about the price. I have managed to get it down to 40k (and then there is the 10% tax as well, sigh).
Do you think that is a decent price?

Nice car but keep looking, I would think you can get a 2000 or 2001 for that price...you can find a 99 much cheaper and in the same condition.
I would think the high side of pricing would be around $34000 for a 99 cab.
Yes.
Check the Porsche website under Used vehicles..look for a CPO. You can get a better deal there than what you are looking at and it will have warranty.
I think 40K is on the higher side, but it still looks like a good deal to me. When I bought my car I clearly noticed that p-cars are more expensive here in the Bay Area (e.g. you can find a similar car for 3-4K lesser on ebay, but the car will be somewhere out in Texas or Florida, or where ever). On the other hand, we Bay Area folks can command the same higher prices when selling locally.
With the options that are mentioned: especially the 2 year engine warranty, the new clutch (hopefully with a 1 year warranty from the dealer/mechanic that did the work), the navigation, the 6 CD changer and premium sound -- it sounds like a great car. I would say that if it fits your budget and the car has passed a rigorous PPI, you should go for the deal. If you squeeze the seller down to 39 or 38K it would really be a great deal.
The 8.75% tax is killing, I agree. I don't understand why we pay taxes on trading something that is used (and for which taxes have been collected when it was bought new).
As a rule I don't like the colors in the interior but I like this car. Looks like a better choice than your first one. I've always been a fan of the hard back sport seats, wish I had them in my car.
I believe that's way too high. Its been almost 18 months since I paid $43K for a 2000 Cab with only 30K miles, great PPI, and in near perfect condition.
You can probly get another 1-2k off but this one is pretty nicely optioned with Nav (altho obsolete), full leather, upgrade wheels, new engine and clutch. I'd say go for it if you like the color. A big plus is warranty on engine for 2 yrs. Make sure other things like expansion tank has been replaced. Also, new brakes are probly due.
I would offer him 36k and wait. It's VERY hard to sell a car thats had an engine blow up already, and if he's like most of the people I've read on here he want's out of his blown engine car in the worst way.
In November, I bought a 2000 Cab from a dealer in Los Angeles - car had fewer than 40,000 miles and had 2 years of Porsche CPO Warranty Coverage remaining. Car is mint and cost me $45k, and some have told me I overpaid, but I was happy. Using this as a benchmark, I would think you can do better.
