Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I gather that there weren't any significant changes but I am expecting some details to change year to year.
Leading evidence: 'Replace but i am expecting some details' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace but i am expecting some details' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I have looked at those links previously and as far as I can see they don't detail any changes from 2002-3-4 model years.

Also I have read about IMS bearings changing over the years - any changes in the 3.6 motor between 2002 and 2004?

This would only impact the audio system in the vehicle, and it only really matters if you want to upgrade or change the system.

I am trying to find out what changes were made from 2002 to 2004.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
I've decided that a 996 C4S is the car I want, fortunately for me I like a lot of colours (red, yellow, black, silver and grey all look great, don't mind blue either!). I am trying to find out what changes were made from 2002 to 2004. I have downloaded the options guides for 2003-04 but I can't find anywhere that lists the detail upgrades (mechanical/cosmetic) over the model life. Anyone here know?
Thanks, Ben
To my knowledge, the only significant change was the addition of the MOST fiber-optic system in 2003. This would only impact the audio system in the vehicle, and it only really matters if you want to upgrade or change the system. I know that there were some wheel options that were only available in some years, such as the Sport Techno wheel. Other than that, I believe that they are basically the same from year to year.
I have looked at those links previously and as far as I can see they don't detail any changes from 2002-3-4 model years. I gather that there weren't any significant changes but I am expecting some details to change year to year. From looking at photos, 2002 models appear to have different or no side skirts - can anyone confirm? Also I have read about IMS bearings changing over the years - any changes in the 3.6 motor between 2002 and 2004? From what I have read, around 2005 the IMS bearing chaged to a non-replaceable type.
Probably none of these changes will be game-changers in selecting a vehicle although I have often read on these forums "buy the latest model year you can afford" due to minor updates through the life - hence my query. (yes, I can be a tech-nerd at times!)
Regards, Ben
My 2002 has side skirts. They obviously aren't huge like an aero kit, but they are exactly the same as the turbo. I believe that the 996 C4S from 2002 - 2005 is cosmetically identical.
I havnt seen any difference in the models from 02-04 other than the sport techno wheel option. I wouldnt worry too much about the year. Instead try to find a good example with records and make sure you do a proper PPI. Good luck. The "hunt" is just as fun...

No, Sides were the same for 02-05, no body changes what so ever.
But Yes the 05 Model had the 997 Type IMS which is non Serviceable, meaning you cant upgrade to a LN Unit.
Also All Factory Rebuilt Motor's as of 05 were the same.
What? No! 02-05 C4S, 01-05 Turbo & 02-05 GT2 were Wide Bodies
Wide Body GT3 Wheels were an Option of 04-05 Models.
