that and the fact that it's not the bodyshop that decides what is repaired and what is replaced after an accident - it's the insurance adjuster.

Have used Farmers and State Farm for many years in the past.

Suggestion
I refuse to use State Farm or Allstate because they wouldn't give me anything resembling reasonable rates when I was a 23 yr old new college graduate with a clean record.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I use State Farm. Wife backed a 2 week old Volvo into a yard guys truck in the driveway, crunched the trunk lid and bumper somewhat. State Farm paid for totally new parts, even though a repair/repaint would be cheaper, since the car was so new.
Allstate for my car and my bikes. Like Mike said, I have also used them for over a decade and they have always come through in a pinch. Howeover, it should be noted that my driving record is more than clean over the past 5 years; I am told they aren't the most affordable when one's driving record is a little cloudier.
lousy if you get hit by one of their drivers. I found this out the hard way. My wife was involved in two accidents that were not her fault. One was in a 1 month old BMW 330i loaded and the other in an 8 month old Audi 225hpTT. Both drivers that hit her were Allstate insured and I cannot tell you the trouble that I went through to get those cars fixed correctly in both instances. Allstate was constantly trying to cut corners with the repair and I had to fight the whole way. This really pissed me off on the BMW. This was a 43K car with 1000 miles and they wanted to cut corners and repair it in a half-a** way.
Both cars eventually got repaired to my satisfaction, but I hope that I never am involved with Allstate again!! Even the body shopped rolled their eyes and told me to expect trouble when I said the other party had Allstate. The one shop told me that Allstate is the only company they have these problem with. I do not know if the treat their insured drivers that way, but BEWARE is all I can tell you. On the positive side, I have had State Farm for over a decade and they have treated my unbelievably well. I use them for all three of my cars and my house as well.
I use American Family and am happy with them. I used Chubb for a while... they are supposed to be premium insurance but they just rip you off if you've had a fender bender. I refuse to use State Farm or Allstate because they wouldn't give me anything resembling reasonable rates when I was a 23 yr old new college graduate with a clean record. I had to spend a year in the risk pool. Now that I'm actuarially desirable I'll send my money elsewhere.
Geico. $1100/yr for 2001 911. I agree with Patrick F about Allstate. I had a claim against an Allstate insured, and they were a real PIA. Adjuster started talking about depreciating my bumper which was damaged -- give me a break. Also, they wanted to pay for only 2 days of rental car, even though the car was in the shop for 5 working days plus 2 weekend days (for drop off andpick up). Finally, I hear they're quick to drop you like a hot potato if you make any claims.
Years ago I was with Allstate, from the age of 16 until I was 28, 12 years, never an accident or claim. Then my Porsche was broken into twice in one year, total claims were less than one years premium. The todl me I was "uninsurable" and cancelled my policy. Unbelievable!! I appealed to the state insurance commission and they said Allstate had not given proper notice so they had to renew me for the next 6 months. However they refused to commit that they would renew after the six month period. By that time I had already found new and better coverage with State Farm at a lower rate. Left and never went back. Now that was 20+ years ago, but I would never give them any business again. They weren't in the business of providing insurance, onl;y collecting premiums. I was with State Farm for many yeras and they were quite good. About 15 yeras ago went with USAA and they have been great.
One note, I used to get regular solicitations from GEICO, but everytime I asked for a quote they said they would not insure high performance cars like Porsches. Guess that has changed.
State Farm cannot cancel your insurance for ANY reason after being with them for 10 years, providing you make your payments. Also, small claims, like under $1000 are covered at the agent level with no problems.
I had a water line break at my lake house a few years ago and it damaged the oak flooring. I chose State Farm approved, guaranteed contractor who ended up ruining the floor. The $5,000 refinishing job turned into a $38,000 floor replacement. They issued me a check for the full amount. House premium went up $75 annually.
State Farm, been with them for 20 years and never had one complain. I have had my share of claims. Premiums stayed the same, lowered over the years and extremely pleased with their claim process and service. My wife had USAA when we got married, but she moved over to State Farm as well, cost savings plus better service.
My Porsche is $150 / month with State Farm including glass coverage ( a Colorado must ). That's with 3 other cars insured with them - not sure if that makes it cheaper.
I LOVE State Farm. When my wife totalled my Merc, they paid me what I'd paid for it 3 years earlier when it was a 2 year old.. and my premium only went up by $9.
After an accident ( in same Merc ) I told them I had Allstate because I always get mixed up between All State and State Farm and when I corrected myself they said, "Oh good.. If it had been All State they would tell me to FIX that bumper. State Farm will be fine with it being replaced.. They'll get me to do a quick search for a reconditioned one ( which won't be available ) and you'll get a brand new one". I've heard things like that from more than one bodyshop.
And of course it helps that my State Farm agent has 2 PORSCHES ;-) If you're looking for insurance in Denver give her a call: Lori Rickerts: [phone removed] and tell her Keith sent ya.

I need a little more information on this figure. $1100 a year? On Long Island? That seems conspicuously low. If it's not, what's the secret? I pay more than double that and thought I was doing very well for this region. And, that's after taking the non-daily driver, low mileage, and increased deductible options.
Is your car really old? Are you an extraordinarily safe driver? What's the secret?
I live in Ohio with State Farm insurance at 100/300/100 and 100 medical and my premiums are $750-$800 per year with full coverage with a $500 deducatable. I am very happy with State Farm. My wife drives a loaded VW Touareg that was in excess of $50K new, and her premiums are about $700-$750 with the same coverages above. You cant beat it.
So in Ohio looks like your medical is covered by your car insurance in an auto accident? Used to be that way in Colorado too if I remember correctly. Not anymore.. which makes like simplier I think.. I mean why should I have to make an HMO PPO decision when buying car insurance!
Also not sure if we are comparing apples to apples here. I got a Geiko quote once, and it was looooowwwww but it was for minimum coverage required by law.. which made me very nervous. For CO it was something like $50k 3rd party damage which just isn't enough. My $1750 / year policy with State Farm includes glass, and much higher coverage limits.
With Statefarm if you insure all of your vehicles to a certain level then you qualify for an "umbrella" policy which is cheap and globally covers you if any claims exceed the base insurance. That makes me more comfortable.. that and the fact that it's not the bodyshop that decides what is repaired and what is replaced after an accident - it's the insurance adjuster. At the end of the day you don't know how good your insurance company is until you've had an accident and at that point it's a question of:
- do they allow you to take the car wherever you want?
- do they have relationships with lots of body shops so that it makes the paperwork and payment more streamlined
- to what extent to the hike premiums after a single accident
- how do the run valuations on a car to calculate the write-off value.
After I had an accident and had to go through this twice with my Merc ( not my fault of course ;-) ) and my wife then totalled it I am a State Farm client for life.
- they allowed me to take the car to Stutgard Autobody.. perhaps the best ( and most expensive ) bodyshop in town
- they paid direct
- premium went up $9
- when it was totalled they sent me paperwork on 3 similar cars that had been sold at DEALERS over the previous 3 months and valued the car based on them.. this was WAY above blue book.

Just switched from AllState to Liberty Mutual. Paying $1400/yr for the C4S here in NJ. Although I've never had any claims with Allstate so therefore have no experience with them on that end, I did find my regional reps to provide great service.
I switched b/c Liberty Mutual was $1000 less per year. Apparently, they are really marketing their college alumni savings program. See if the college you graduated from has any affiliation with them. I gave Allstate the chance to counter the offer but they couldn't even save me a penny. They told me I had maximized on possible discounts. I do have zero points and a zero accident history. Also, the car is in a multi-car program so that may possibly save some money as well.
21st Century. Never had a claim, so I don't know about their service.
DO NOT GET GEICO!!
They are run by safety ***** and "donate" several million dollars worth of radar and laser equipment to police regularly.
They take your money, give it to cops in form of ticket writing equipment and constantly lobby to decrease speed limits, so you get nailed for speeding tickets, in a wide street with a ridiculously low speed limit, with equipment which your money helped buy, and your premiums go up, and they make more money off of you.
I HATE GEICO
It's unreal how disparate the premiums are. This thread prompted me to check on Geico's and Progressive's sites just to see what they offer. Here's the results:
Currently, I'm paying $1053 every 6 months with Allstate.
Geico came in at $665 every 6 months.
Progressive quoted me $574 every 6 months.
Now, I am pricing these online and tried to match my existing policy exactly, but maybe I missed something. I mean, how can it be that much less? Suffice it to say, I have already placed a call to my Allstate agent (who I think is terrific, but not enough to warrant an extra $1000 a year, you know?) to see if they can come close. If not, looks like I'm trying Progressive.
Geico,
I live in Los Angeles County which has pretty high rates, pay $780 a year full coverage on a 2002 C2. I have several vehicles insured by them. Also currently use Haggerty, Progressive, Avemco, and Allstate. Have used Farmers and State Farm for many years in the past. I find that Allstate, Farmers, and State Farm to be the highest premiums on just about anything. Geico I understand from other people who have had claims with them do not pay off very well. They will try to settle for less then wholesale blue book if they can get away with it.
I am insurance poor. Everytime I get a bill from an insurance company, which is about every two months, the first thing I do is start shopping. If they come up with something totally out in left field, like State Farm and Farmers does on high performance vehicles, I say Bye-bye....

2002 C2
Car is 2001. 21 years with Geico, only a claim for a cracked windshield (over 10 years ago). No tickets, no accidents. Defensive driving course discount. Multi-car discount. Car is not used for commuting (under 3k miles/ year category -- in fact, used less than 1000 miles/year). Full coverage: $300k liability, $250 ded on vandalism, $500 ded on fire & theft.
General Casualty Co. Coverage of 2005 Porsche 911 $500,000 Bodily injury, property damage, uninsured motorist, $10,000 medical payments, $500 deductible = $301 every six months. Have four vehicles (2/Porsches, 2/Mercedes) insured with them. Total premium for a four is $1,334.
Glad in don't live in New York!
I've lost track, but I guess it's been around 25 years with GEICO. To me customer service is just as imortant as price when it comes to auto insurance. In February 1995 I was driving my 993 down a country road, came across some black ice, and slid up an embankment and flipped over. The car was totalled. Since my car was only a little over a year old I was really concerned about what GEICO would pay me for my 993, since there's a huge differance between Porsche wholesale and retail values. I was prepared for the worse but GEICO came through and paid me full retail.
