Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought a correct keyhead from ebay for my car thinking that I would just get the metal key replaced, have the dealer reprogram it and be set. Now I am reading that I need a 16 digit bar code to make it work. Is ths correct? If so, can I just place the metal key in the head and use it by insering it into the door? Will the only part that does not work be the remote feature? Any help would be appreciated.

POST 2Original post

A new key head which operates the remote locks has TWO electronic chips that must be mated to the car by a dealer. 1. the Immobilizer, found in both Valet and Remote key heads can be mated with no additional information required, other than the presence of the key head. 2. the remote lock transmitter requires the 16 digit bar code that normally comes on a tag attached to a new key, and a vehicle code that the dealer must obtain from PCNA. If you have a remote key head without the bar code, its immobiizer CAN be mated to your car by the dealer, and the key will operate the ignition. It would operate the door locks only when inserted in the lock cylinder. In essence, it would function just like a valet key head. The metal key shank is simply pulled from the old key head and inserted in the new one.
