Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Thinking of selling my targa. Curious to what you all think I could get / should ask? 2002 Seal Gray targa, CPO expires in about 2-3 weeks -35,000 miles -30k service complete -Service records since new -IMS Guardian will come with it -Hand washed / Griot's products by me for the last 20k miles. -Paint is 9/10 -Interior 9/10 -I'm the 3rd owner (all owners have had car under factory / CPO warranty) -3 DE days -Xenons -Heated Sport Seats (black interior) -Bose -18" lightweight carrera's -Carbon fiber gear shifter / parking brake -Console painted seal gray -Rocker panels -PSM -ROW M030 suspension -997 shifter -GT3 lip spoiler -GT3 center console delete (have stock center console) -Rennline sport pedals -New Yokohama AD08s -Oil changed every 5k, plugs replaced this summer -A lot repaired under CPO (all from memory at this point): fuel pump, coils, coolant reservoir, window regulators, MAF, seat belt buckles, RMS, timing chain guides, fuel filler stuff, and plenty other things I can't recall right now. There may be other options and definitely more repairs that I don't have at my fingertips. If I sell, I'll comb carefully through receipts of course. But this should be enough to get some guesses. So, what do you say?

POST 3Original post

Well, if you price it mid $30s problem you starting to get into 997 territory. Car is clean and low miles so I think it will sell but might take some time IMO Yeah, what you are buying next?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 9001027

Air cooled most likely. I'll sell Wrangler and 996 now (if it sells). Buy GTI this winter, then start the search for a $20k or less 1984-1994 911. I like the 996 a lot but I've wanted an air cooled since I've been a kid. My grandpa had a 1973 911E and he sold it in 1990 when I was 18. Sick of Jeep so GTI will replace that.

POST 5Original post

welcome to the club!!! I cannot say if you will enjoy it as much as I do, but I can say if you have any interest in doing it....you should at least do it and find out.... You know Ferd (redridge) picked up an 84 Targa this year too...I think he is having fun with it. for me it was a step in my Porsche life I needed to take before I went for the 997...after I took the step I wont be needing to acquire the 997 afterall (maybe a 356 or late 60's 911)

POST 6Original post

Agree, mid thirties or higher if you're not in a hurry Another option is to take it to Carmax, see what they offer. Price accordingly. Good luck on the quest for an air S U C K E R !!!

POST 8Original post

Mid-30s might be right, if not a bit high, but if the car is as nice as it sounds in your description and you're patient you might find the right buyer. Good luck! -Eric

I'm thinking $32-33k but time will tell. If a VW/Porsche dealer (not that many combos) will give me $31 on trade, I'll take it to save the $1,500 on tax for a GTI. Then the hunt for an air cooled will begin. Luckily there there are 2 VW/Porsche dealers in my state, so we'll see what they want to do. Check out this crazy asking price...granted very low miles: http://ucl.porsche.de/ucl/plsql/usa/...&pnr_=2&lnr_=9

Can you describe what it is about air cooled that gives you so much satisfaction?

POST 11Original post

After owning 2 air/oil cooled Porsches I'd say, the sound, the nimble handling, the smell(interior) and the mystique.

I thought there were 2 just in Cuyahoga? And maybe another south somewhere, Barberton?

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 9002645

There are 2 Porsche dealers in Cuyahoga county and one near Barbeton...you are correct. But only 2 VW / Porsche dealers that have both brands in Ohio from what I can recall. One in Dayton and one in Columbus (MAG).

I like to explain it like this.... Lear Jets are really cool, really fast, comfortable and elite - a P-51 Mustang is also really cool, really fast (though not AS fast) not so comfortable and elite.... some people will always want to fly the P-51, others will always be lured to the Lear Jets....both respect each other's reasons, both would be happy to fly the other guys, but both fly theirs because it speaks to them........ so I drive a 25 year old Porsche, and dream of a 35-45 year old one That's kinda how I explain it

POST 15Original post

I would like to pick up a 964 in addition to my 996. I would prefer a 993, but the cost will be so much higher. Maybe if the bonus at work is good this year I can put that towards a car. Something in the 15-18K range would be nice.

POST 16Original post

i went from 911sc to '96 993 C4 to '95 993 C2 then to 1990 964...reason simple: having owned over 15 911's(early cars, s, and sc's) i thought it would be cool to have the 993 because of the beautiful design. i'm not an aggressive driver but enjoy long road trips thru the mountains at sane speeds...i enjoyed the 993 but it didn't have the early car feel. when i purchased my 964 i got the early 911 feel combined with some better comforts like heating, fan and better tranny. **if you decide to go 993, because of the dreaded CEL/SAI issues associated with the 993, make sure you buy a 1995 version so the emission inspection won't be an issue.(if the SAI ports get clogged in a 1996 or newer 993 it WILL be detected by the emissions plug in)

That's a great way to describe it. This little dry sumper was at the dealership. I'm looking at a black 997 that's just what I want, but this little car keeps popping into my head. If it were a coupe I'd realy be interested. I want to turn an older 911 into a race car someday.

I have been in the market for sometime and I think your best bet is to go to a carmax and get a quote from there since they don't normally screwed around like some car dealers do but they won't be much better than the wholesale market either....I was in contact with a seller of 02 Cab with 29kmiles and expired CPO...he was asking initially 32k and then 30k and would let it go for 29k. and this was more than month ago. I assume he already went thru dealer route and got a not so pretty offer. I am tracking 997 as well and a guy in So Cal was quoted (by Carmax) mid 30's for his 05 C2S coupe with 50k miles; his car is a well equiped launch edition...if you look at 997 C2S asking price, they are all mid 40's....so the spread is very wide and apply that spread to 996's asking price, you then have some idea what's a real price range that you are looking at....I highly doubt you will get a trade in value for above 30k unless they kill you on the new car side....but if private party, around 28-30k is possible.

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm working with 2 VW/Porsche dealers now. One of ten has two 2004 996s listed at $44k with similar mileage and options. Crazy asking prices but I'm hoping this one will provide a higher trade offer due to this. I'll know in the next couple of days.

POST 33Original post

I purchased an '02 targa this spring for <<$30K private sale (but the guy was moving to Europe and had to sell) ... slightly higher mileage and not quite as many options as your's. I had gone to local dealer and they had an ;02 targa in very good condition with 40K ish miles - asking $33K back then - so assume I could have purchase for 10% less - but that means the dealer would have bought it for 10% less than that - (or lower) I'm guessing. Targa's are pretty rare - so if you find someone like me that really wants a targa you might be able to get premium - plus for low miles and well maintained. I'd advertise in the low 30's - and you should be able to get close to 30 (maybe a little under) if you wait. I'd be interested to see what a dealer would offer you - be surprised if it is more than $27 unless they are screwing you somewhere else in the trade - especially in this economy ... But sounds like very nice car .....

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 9012396

Yeah I hear you. The only thing that has me thinking a closer to $30k is that the other two 996s are listed at $47k...maybe a typo because that doesn't make sense. But then again dealers are hurting for clean, low mileage cars like this with desirable options. If they can make $4k on it and sell a GTI, then maybe that's good for a dealer...not really sure. They can't screw me on the GTI purchase. I've checked a few VW dealers and they are at invoice or up to $300 over invoice. So we'll see what happens. If it all shakes out, then bye bye Jeep, hello 1984-1994 911.

POST 35Original post

$47 sounds very high for a 996 ... you can see 997's without too many miles starting around that price now ... at least in CA. GTI's are very nice - I used to own a 1986 ... great/fun car to drive .... and totally practical as well - haven't driven a newer one - but last trip to Germany I had a Golf 1.4 TSI rental with PDK - bombing down the autobahn at 200KMH - even that thing was fun - and close to 40MPG ..... Good luck

Why are there so many cool old Porsche's in Seattle? Damn it, If I wasn't so far away.

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

$27k is best trade offer so far. If a dealer comes back a little over $28k I may do it. No sales tax on the GTI is helpful.

POST 38Original post

Wow! Thats a great deal! Someone jump on this !

POST 39Original post

28K is a very nice price.... targa buyers are few though. As for the AC 911.... the best thing I love about them is its size and the non-power steering.... the car really talks to you.

POST 41 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

One came back with a $28k trade in offer. Getting very tempting now.

POST 43Original post

Quotes source post: 9026916

I agree....you alternative is to wait for someone who is looking for a targa specifically and hoping that he/she will pay up. If i were you, 28k is pretty good. holiday/winter season is not exactly a great time for selling RWD sports cars.....

POST 44 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 9027108

Plus the $1,500 tax savings is a plus vs. trying to sell it for $30k private party. I'm looking forward to the air cooled search, so I'm going to confirm tomorrow morning. The dealer will have to do a dealer trade to get the GTI I want, so they will have to drive it 200 miles. I don't like people driving my cars, but there's not much I can do. Before I get the AC 911, I'll first have to sell my 1987 Wrangler to make some room in the garage. I've had it since 1996 and have put about 50k miles on it in 15 years, so it will be tough to let go. And it's never been to a shop either...super easy to work on. I pulled the starter a couple of weeks ago in about 10 minutes and didn't even have to get a floor jack out...just roll underneath it.

POST 45Original post

sell it...then work on the Wrangler great time of year to sell that too! btw if you dont have a 996 you cant come on this forum anymore

POST 46Original post

Sounds like your mind is made up. Let us know the outcome.

POST 47 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You can't get rid of me that quickly! Picking up GTI Friday morning. I'll have a bunch of hardware to sell: Fabspeed exhaust, H&R sway bars, Carbotech pads, GT3 center console delete, clear side markers, Redline pedal set, red tube intake, and unopened IMSG (unless Jake will let me return it). Once I deinstall everything I'll post them up for sale with pictures.
