I don't know if I'd qualify as a mentor, but I'd be glad to help you out changing the brakes, and trackside, too.

Just got my 2001 996 C2 a few weeks ago and found out today that I cannot enter the Mid-Ohio DE in late April unless I replace brakes/rotors all around.

You'll be forced to change pads for street vs track events.

I have stock rotors and run Carbotech RP2 and have had good luck with them.

My take is since you are going to do Mid-Ohio, perhaps Nelson Ledges (fun track as well), and maybe Bear Run, I suggest you go with totally factory stock disc's and pads.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Car is daily driver and I'd like to do 2-3 DE events per year.
Suggestions on rotors and pads would be great as I'm very new to this.
(I did search the forums, but, came up pretty empty - maybe I need a lesson in how to search)
Thx....
Well, I am certain you will get lots of ideas on this from others.
My take is since you are going to do Mid-Ohio, perhaps Nelson Ledges (fun track as well), and maybe Bear Run, I suggest you go with totally factory stock disc's and pads. You can drive those courses 2-3 times a year and not have to redo your brakes each season if you remain stock. Once you go for track pads, you wear down the rotors much quicker as well. Plus track pads will not warm up on the streets of Cleveland from late October to mid-April which may be judged an inconvenience if you decide to take an Indian Summer cruise through the Metroparks in December. You'll be forced to change pads for street vs track events.
It is DE, not club racing. Do yourself a favor and stay stock. I have 84,000 miles on my original stock rotors and pads and plenty of life left. Look closely at my avatar and you will see my car is no stranger to frequent DE's... including your local tracks.
I just, today, put on Zimmerman rotors, ATEs up front and Pagids rear. Pretty standard set up. New brakes are nice
I may do a DE or two this year as well, I think this set up will be fine.
Why mix ATE/Pagid ? I'm going to do my brakes pretty soon. Zimmerman looks like OE rotor supplier at 1/2 price of OEM - Textar looks like OE pad supplier - so what is benefit of ATE over them ?
For a new car I'd go with OEM components - but for a 10 y/o car where most of us are trying save some money on the BBS here - the OE supplier components (form Pelican for example) seem like the optimal solution ...
I used Zimmerman rotors and OEM pads up front last year and am very happy with the results. Doing the work was very basic and pretty easy to do as a first timer.
Just to clarify a few items... Zimmerman is not nor have they been a supplier to Porsche for the better part of 20 years. Yes, they make aftermarket replacement parts and the Z Protection Coating is nothing more than marketing
... Resulting in Rusty Rotors at a faster rate then other brands.
Textar is the entry level product of the TMD portfolio... The OEM pads are manufactured by Brembo.
While Textar makes a fairly good pad. These are designed for the Budget minded consumer... (think of what you get from many of the large Automotive supply stores... low end pads that are intended to stop your Pinto!) they will not handle the task as well as the OEM or other higher end compounds will. Another point to keep in mind is that the Textar pads will generate much more brake Dust over the OEM pads.
While I understand your reasoning and need to save money (as many of us are doing these days), you need to consider what you are getting.
Myself, I do not mind the dust, but want a pad that can take some heat without breaking down at 3x's the rate of other pads. But, I hate rusty parts!
While we source the Zimmerman's & Textar components for clients that ask for them... It is not my recommendation. Other OE brands offer a cost savings over OEM while meeting a higher standard.
In the end you get what you pay for!
Got all my Front Brake Parts from
www.ecstuning.com
and they are in OH, so you can probably drop in pick up your parts.
I just got Sebro Drilled Rotors and PRB Pads. I have had great luck with PRB Pads in the Past on all my other previous cars.
Sebro, from what i have read are Porsche OEM Supplier. But the Quiality seems to be less than "Genuine" Porsche Rotors which are also Sebro now i believe, Lets see how they Hold up...
ATE Pads from what i have seen at my friends shop are just Rebranded Textar/Pagid/Mintex (TMD) pads.
I will be doing my brakes soon, also. I am looking for rust resistant rotors and low dust pads. Does anybody use ceramic pads for less dust? I don't track the car.
I say go stock rotors and pads for your first DE. You can get them from Chris or Suncoast or Pelican or....
If you like the DE thing keep the stock rotors you have and get some pads for track days. Switching pads is very simple. I have stock rotors and run Carbotech RP2 and have had good luck with them. Very noisy for the street though.
I have OEM rotors and EBC Red pads. I don't really like the EBCs, initial bite is weak and I just don't feel like they really grab that hard during normal driving. However, they grab pretty well when you heat them up a bit. They're are fairly low dust though, which is nice.
For a good low-dust street pad that bites well, I like Akebono pads. I haven't checked to see if they make pads for 996s yet, but I've had them on other cars and really like them. A great pad for street driving that can handle a little bit of track time.
This combo works well for me. Most of my instructors are impressed with the stopping power and lack of fade with these parts. I've got ~10 DEs on the pads and they still have quite a bit of life in them. As others stated, I'd stick with stock or nearly stock for a while.

i have 155km on Orginal Rotors and 80km on Second Set of Pads. My car is a DD Summer/Fall/Winter/Spring and about 5 Track Days a Year @ Mosport Full Out!
Brad, Tim... thank you both for offering to help... When I gather the parts, I'll reach out to you to see who might be available. Awesome forum... appreciate the help.
