The 2005 997 uses the M96 engine, and it still has the potential for an IMS issue, even though it is quite rare.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone,
I am looking to change cars (currently am driving an '01 C4)
I was origianlly thinking about a Lotus Exige S, but then I saw a couple of options.
An '02 turbo with low miles (16k) and an '05 Carrera S (about 44k on the clock).
1) Which one would you guys go for?
2) What would be a good price for each one?
3) What problems does each one inherently come with? IMS, etc...
thanks
I can't really comment on the prices, as I've been out of the market for a while.
The 997 C2S and the 996 turbo are very different cars. I've driven both, and I love both. I think you'll find that your preference will probably depend on your driving style. If you like to drive aggressively, then you'll probably prefer the turbo. The 997 C2S is no slouch, but it's not in the same league as the 996 turbo. If you want more of a cruiser, then get the C2S. The 997 interior is a nice upgrade, and you'll really like it.
The 996 turbo uses the GT1 block, and therefore doesn't have IMS issues like a standard 996. The 2005 997 uses the M96 engine, and it still has the potential for an IMS issue, even though it is quite rare.
Personally, I'd lean towards the 996 turbo if it has the color scheme and options that you like. The 911 turbo is a pretty special car, in any iteration.
It's a fun choice to have to make!
Boost is addictive. I'd give the 997 the edge on interior design and headlights, but the motor in the 996 turbo is amazing and nearly bulletproof.
I'd go for an 03 or 04 though. Tranny improvements over the 02.
Well if you go as far as finding both available in your choice of options......
The turbo is great with the power.
The S model might have you sitting there a few thousand miles down the road remembering you'd have lower miles on the turbo and more power.
I'd go turbo.
You can spend hours reading posts and formulate your own opinion.
Turbo is the much better car, the '05 S is newer but still prone to IMS issues.
You are asking essentially, buy an old low mile Turbo or a newer (ticking time bomb) first year 997.
My answer is neither, ante up and get a newer 996 Turbo, '03 or '04.
not even close for me.....turbo. Better engine, brakes, handling , looks and platform to build serious power. The only possible edge the 997.1 may have (if properly equiped with full leather) is the interior. I am the minority that actually like the 996.2 lights. If you are going 997 imho the only years worth the upgrade are 2009+
Okay, here goes a monkey wrench into the gearbox (no pun intended), but I just came across an '08 Carrera, 44k on the clock, With a CPO till April of 2014... mint, except there is a whole in the headliner about the size of a dime under the passenger side sun visor, and the owner told me that he had a mouse in the car that chewed the wire to the third brake light. He had it repaired at the dealer and they cleared out the mouse's nest.
The owner states that there are now no problems with the car.
Do you guys think that there might be other hidden problems waiting to happen from what that mouse might have done? Should I walk away?
nope thats why i said 09 plus are the only years to buy if ims is an issue for you. All 997s up to 2009 had an ims. plus non s cars are not worth it imo when s cars are availible. Even the 997 guys are telling you, dont drive the turbo , you wont want the c2. I know i did not drive the turbo for that exact reason lol.
