Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2000 cab with 38K miles and it's absouletly a blast to drive. I sold my 87 targa recently so maybe I'm not use to the dual mass flywheel and clutch engagement on a 996, but after I start out and then have to stop and disengage the clutch in first gear, you hear a very metallic sounding rattle. The car shifts fine through all the gears and this only happens in 1st and have to stop quick and depress the clutch. My mechanic said that was normal but sure doesn't sound right?

POST 2Original post

sounds pretty normal to me but i didnt hear it in person, Being a 2000 (out of warrenty) they could have easily charged ya to pull the tranny and find that theres nothing wrong. Find some one with a 996 to go for a ride with and see if theirs does it too

POST 3Original post

Let me get this straight, you have a DMF and it rattles? Are you certain it is a DMF and not a single mass LWF? My DMF never rattled. My new LWF does, a little, when in neutral. Push in the clutch and the rattle goes away.

POST 4Original post

I guess it's better than the bang noise I get when I do that. Sounds like " boom" My dealer also stated it was normal. It's been that when for a years with no increase or decrease in level of bang I've come to realize each porsche has its own ideosincracy. Unless it blows up I'm happy

POST 5Original post

Based solely on your description (and not knowing how loud it is) that sounds similar to how I would describe a loose driveshaft or halfshaft as the mating surfaces slide against one another under loading. But if the dealer checked it out and it's been a few years, it's probably nothing to worry about.

POST 6Original post

Well that's what I would have thought too. Only after having the driveshaft disconnect 2x. I'm not ****ting you... Telling MGT after the 2nd tow that this better never happen again and to lock tight the SOB or they will wish they had never sold this car to me. It only took 3 weeks between each occurrence calling for a tow After that and 8 months later on, no more tows but still have the bump noise.

POST 7Original post

Could it be that the exhaust clamps are a little loose and that's the rattle that you're hearing when engine revs are low?

POST 8Original post

I think mine does it too. Heading to a stop, in first, I step on the clutch, and it sounds like the clutch takes an extra second to disengage, and makes a noise. I thought my clutch was going, but at 18k miles, hope it's "normal"!

POST 9Original post

its the same noise the car makes if you almost stall it, its the dual mass and its normal they all do it

POST 10Original post

Cool! I thought I messed something up by removing my clutch helper spring!

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great. Sounds like this is semi normal (versus abby normal). I should also mention it only sounds bad when the engine is under any kind of load. If you have time to take your foot off the gas and let the engine start to decellerate, it doesn't make a noise.
