After a nice drive, check the temperature of the center of the wheels with your hand and a bad bearing will be evident.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How do you know if your wheel bearings are bad other than play in the wheel?

POST 2Original post

Wheel bearings start with a clicking sound that occurs at every revolution and progressively gets worse. Actually, if you feel major play in the wheel from the bearing (which I doubt), you could lose the wheel.

POST 3Original post

A bad wheel bearing will also produce a tremendous amount of heat...above and beyond anything you can touch. After a nice drive, check the temperature of the center of the wheels with your hand and a bad bearing will be evident. In addition, there will eventually be noise and the noise will change with speed and turning. If it is binding enough, the car may pull to the side of the bad front bearing when cruising and to the side of the bad rear bearing when decelerating. Symptoms of the pull will be exactly like low pressure in a tire.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm experiencing excessive vibration at high speeds (yes, the tires are well balanced and the wheels are straight) and was told that I have a bad wheel bearing. Based on the responses, it sounds like there's something else wrong with my car. Anyone have any ideas about what could be causing the vibrations???

POST 5Original post

I would still not rule out tire balance. 90% of shops have no idea how to properly balance tirres anyway, so it is easy for them to blame some componant that they are not reposinsible for. If vibration is on one side only, swap tires and if it is the tire, the symptoms will follow it.

POST 6Original post

Sounds like you have a seperated cord in the tire. Lift the front off the ground and spin the tire, see if the tread has a wiggle in it. Obviously, the tread should be perfectly straight. The cords let go internally sometimes and then the tread gets distorted.

POST 7Original post

In my experience the best way to tell is noise. When wheel bearings start to fail they usually get noisy.
