POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm wondering how man you plan on getting the 997 and getting rid of your 996. Alternatively, how many plan on keeping your 996 and waiting a couple of years until the 997 model stabilizes in looks, mechanics, and price. I've been thinking a lot about getting the 997, but not knowing the price or reliability nor not knowing how much my car will be worth at the end of this year I'm goign to have to weigh in a lot of factors...

POST 2Original post

I will upgrade to a 997 if it is a significant improvement over the 996. By significant I mean better, stronger engine and gearbox not just a facelift. I'll most likely keep my 996 if it is a facelift only. I may just keep it anyway as a track toy.

POST 3Original post

The 997 will have to be a much better car for me to trade my current ride for one. The current photos show it to have 993 styling, which I like, but I also think the 996 looks great. I don't think the 3.8 will be such an improvement over the 3.6 X-51. We'll just have to wait a few months for the first test drives.

POST 4Original post

I'm keeping the '02 996 and adding one of the last GT3s this year. I may trade the '02 for a 997 in a few years. I always stay away from the first year of anything.

POST 6Original post

I'm staying with my '04...it has all of about 650 miles on it so far. The biggest mistake I've made with my other Porsches have been selling them too soon. Once I drive something else for awhile, I just want to go back to a 911. I'm sure the 997 will be great, but it will be awhile before I drive one.

POST 7Original post

I've made my decision. I love my porker but it's too unreliable for the what it costs and the backup service from the maker is poor. The 997 doesn't excite me at all. I would much rather have a reliable current model 996. My next purchase however, will definitely not be a Porsche but I may keep my 996 as a second car for life and watch it depreciate gracefully. I have already sent a letter of intent to purchase the new Aston Martin AmV8. As soon as they are accepting deposits I am on the list. I am sure I won't be the first loyal porsche customer to walk the gangplank.

POST 8Original post

I'll wait for the 998. Or maybe the 998 Turbo. I've got way too much invested in my 996 to be able to sell it at a reasonable price

POST 9Original post

Right now the C6 500 hp ZO6 vet, or the GT3 version of the 997, assuming they put a different aero package on it. I really want a dual purpose street and track car. I have a 99 996 and 993RS race car now. I am planning on slowing down on the racing, since I am getting a little burned out on it. So I will probably sell both sometime in the future and consolidate down to one.

POST 10Original post

I may once I see the car in person and realize the teething pains of a new model are resolved. Just like to wait at least 6 months after new model.

POST 11Original post

This is a nice link that I got off another forum. I don't like the comment of "longer, wider, and taller". This also sounds like heavier. I put it on the 997 section too. Spy Shots :

POST 12Original post

Just like the new Vette, not enough good change to make me wanna run out and buy one.

POST 13Original post

I have a 996 C4S. The 997 C4S, when it comes out, will have to look better than mine for me to change. I'll probably wait for the 998

POST 14Original post

I might upgrade after a year or two if they've solved the RMS issue.

POST 15Original post

I love my 2000 Coupe, and plan to keep it for many more years.

POST 16Original post

I just purchased a 2004 C4S Cab... and I really don't like taking the arrows on first generation models...

POST 17Original post

Wise pioneer, we catch you on RMS, Kimosabee... ;-) I going to buy up after 9-12 mos of intro (if they change from M96 engine)

POST 18Original post

cars are depreciable assest, roughly 1/2 of their depreciation occurs in the 1st 4 years, and I don't have so much that I throw it away just to have the newest ... like mine's too slow anyway

POST 19Original post

997 was lighter than 996, had a DSG gearbox option, and had a better quality interior. Or like Scouser I may wait for a V8 Vantage once the initial rush is over. Having done the Aston Martin factory tour they make you feel like you're at a Saville Row fitting for a handmade suit. If the car drives that well it will be very special

POST 20Original post

Beware it's an English marque.... The use/fix ratio will hopefully be better.

POST 21Original post

I plan on waiting for the 998. IMO buying a 997 will result in another big depreciation hit. I got hit way too hard when I traded my 02 Targa for an 03 4s. Plus, for headlights? Nope. I'll add some custom headlight covers and my 996 will play the 997 part.

POST 22Original post

I like my '99 with LSD and cable throttle so I think I'm set for a while. Of course if there is a significant performance upgrade I might consider it. I guess we'll see once the car is out. Hopefully the 997 or the 998 will be lighter, less insulated (noise - more exhaust music), less electronics, etc. Back to basics.... miss my '78 911SC.

POST 23Original post

I won't decide until I see the final specs on the car and factory photos. I will say that I love driving my 996 and like the looks and interior so the 997 needs to be spectacular in order for me to drop another $30K+ on one. Roy

POST 24Original post

The "leaked" details of the 997 so far do not make me want to change from my 03 C2 Cab. Even a bump of 25-40 hp would not dramatically change the way the car drives. With 3500 miles and depreciation to date of 14.5K (or >$4/mile) it would not make financial sense. (If any P-Car makes financial sense). I think most 02 and newer 996 owners will wait for the 998 or the 997S versions. The 996 was, for me, a great change from my 993. I don't see the 997 as that great a change more of a facelift.

POST 25Original post

996 is the first car I owned I want to keep for the rest of my life. I plan to wait how the 998 going to spec out and still keep my 996. Nice to have 2 911's in the garage : ). Regards. Mike

POST 26Original post

I'm keeping the 996. There is not enough significant improvement in the 997 to justify the added cost of a new car and the cost of the depreciation on the old car. And, if the spy pics are correct, the 997 is a throwback and the 996 looks better. I may be in the market for a track car, such as a used GT3 or a new Elise. Definitely NOT in the market for a 997.

POST 27Original post

Yes, if: - they ditch the M96.03 engine... I they havent fixed issues such as the RMS in 6 years I'm not trusting them with it in the 997. - they offer a C2S with extra HP, and sportier setup and not he turbo looks - they don't make it look retro or older looking than the 996 - they don't make it any heavier - LSD/PSM would be nice - its not just a "facelift" of the 996 to make a few more bucks from the current platform before the 998.

POST 29Original post

I'm optimistic actually, the rumors of a CS2 are pretty solid, with 370-380HP for the C2S it can't be with the M96.03 do its got to be a fairly diff one like the GT3's, the 996 wasn't any heavier than the 993, the current 40th anniv 911 already has LDS with PSM so its posible too. But I'm worried about the 997 being just an big facelift as is rumored, but just a facelift nevertheless of a 6year old car, which would be very cheap and a betrayal if you ask me. We will see in September

POST 30Original post

Carlos, I hope you are right. I've been thinking about the GT3 lately, but it's just not practical for me. One, I need the rear seat so I can enjoy drives with my wife and kid. That's important to me. And two, I want the PSM in a daily driver as security against the crazy things that can suddenly pop-up on public roads. So a GT3 type engine (even detuned a little) in a 2+2 body would be perfect for me!

POST 31Original post

My question is for Scouser. Is a letter of intent part of the official policy for you to get on the wait list of the Aston Martin AMV8 or can you just walk into the dealership and have them place your name on a list?

POST 32Original post

Every Porsche I have had is better than the one before. I have a 2004 C4S Cabriolet. If the 997 looks as good as my 996 I will probably buy one in the last year of production.

POST 33Original post

I have my deposit down on the 997... But I wish that they would have put the GT3 motor in a 996 C2s that could be a daily driver. I have an 02 996 and love everything about it. I can't stand the old 993 interior..looks like a 70s model car. Do you guys think I should wait for the 997 or buy a 02 turbo?

POST 34Original post

Thats exactly my situation too, I would love the GT3 an the 997 GT3 should be out within a year of the first 997 (997C2 = will be presented Sept this year) for race homologation purposes, but I need rear seats on ocasion, also besides everyday street driving, I like driving hard on the rain/wet, so PSM is an extra advantage, and last the ground clearance of a GT3 is imposible since I couldn't park it anyware around here, not even in my own garages and my 996's RoWM030 is about as far as I can go. I think there are a lot of people that would opt for the C2S if its light as a C2, has a GT3-like engine, and sportier setup and options than standard. We will have to wait and see if it becomes a reality or not

POST 35Original post

yeechai, They have not opened the order books yet on the car. But when they do there will be a flood and it's likely to be very difficult to buy one for some time. A way to get around this is to get on the list. But they require a formal letter of intent before they will put you on the list as they don't take deposits until the order books open. First come first served as they say. So I put my letter of intent in months ago after the crap fight I had with Porsche over my RMS and gearbox. I got on the list OK. So now when the order book opens I get to put my deposit down for the car. Basically as far as possible I am guaranteed an allocation. Hope that helps you.

POST 36Original post

I wonder if they are thinking of putting air suspension on the new sports cars. I have it my S (first air for me) and I think it's great. It would resolve the height issue; but I don't know about handling and weight. It would be a logical step in PAGs process of dumbing up the cars.
