I mean....Porsches enjoy a wide range of ownership that cuts across all segments of society and classes.....I would venture to say that it's probably a known fact that there are Porsche friendly smog stations out there as well as knowledge of specifically what to look for in the visual part of the smog inspection process.
Leading evidence: 'known fact' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'known fact' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). So before you CAI, check for CARB approval rating in CA

These cars run pretty dogone clean so it would seem that the only part you need to worry about is the visual.

Would VFLOW pass visual check or I pretty much have to change back the stock each time I do a smog check ?

Look how quickly cdodkin flunked the visual part of the test....On the other hand, when I took my 930 in, they passed it on the visual when in fact it had an aftermarket muffler on it and no cat.

Can't comment on the specific products - however, at my last smog check, when selling my MCS, the visual inspection was very thorough, and all done before the actual smog testing began.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm planning on putting VFLOW, GIAC chip and Orton headers but was wondering to those who had changed one or all of the items above if you had problems with SMOG check ?
Would VFLOW pass visual check or I pretty much have to change back the stock each time I do a smog check ?
Please advise.
Thanks,
J.
Can't comment on the specific products - however, at my last smog check, when selling my MCS, the visual inspection was very thorough, and all done before the actual smog testing began.
There is no way they would miss an exhaust change, it's the first thing they look for.
On my MCS, I had a CAi with no CARB sticker showing, so failed immediately!
Had to drive home, change back to stock, and return for a re-test.
It's damn tough here in CA!!
i think we should start a list of places that's "Porsche Safe" for smog inspection......... but there's gotta be a code or somthing so they won't get caught helping us.....
You can make a secret forum burried in offtopic that only paying members and someone that has met other local rennlisters can access..to discuss all these matters of smogging and where to get it done. That way its uber secret. like the stone cutters..but without secret political connections
How do you know that there aren't any DMV administrators or CHP execs who drive Porsches and belong to this forum? I mean....Porsches enjoy a wide range of ownership that cuts across all segments of society and classes.....I would venture to say that it's probably a known fact that there are Porsche friendly smog stations out there as well as knowledge of specifically what to look for in the visual part of the smog inspection process. Look how quickly cdodkin flunked the visual part of the test....On the other hand, when I took my 930 in, they passed it on the visual when in fact it had an aftermarket muffler on it and no cat. They thought the muffler was the cat. I flunked the emissions part but passed the visual. Had to retro to factory to get thru.
I've kept all my OEM headers, mufflers, and intake in the event I incur the wrath of the smog Gods. I didn't know that they flagged on the CAI's....what about headers and mufflers? Kinda hard to miss headers that are nicely polished stainless....as well as the mufflers. Can anyone say if they've flunked visual for non factory headers and mufflers? These cars run pretty dogone clean so it would seem that the only part you need to worry about is the visual.
We're talking about California here guys....I don't know what you folks in other states have to go thru, but Calif. is about as stringent as any state out there.
If they have CARB approval badges attached, you're good to go.
So before you CAI, check for CARB approval rating in CA
(California Air Resources Board Approval)
If your CAI manufacturer says 'Carb Pending', then you'll fail your next Smog test, as you'll have no CARB sticker.
Anything that could potentially effect emissions is now under scrutiny in the CA smog test - you have been warned
visual tests are beyond retarded...who cares if the car passes with an FI kit bolted on as long as it passes.
DMV cares....and we folks in California are stuck with it. I do know that the process for getting a product CARB certified is a long and involved process. Cdodkin....what CAI do you have? I've got the EVOM...but I don't recall seeing any CARB sticker, but I'll sure as hell look tomorrow. I know I have a CARB sticker on my 930 that has the MSD ignition box...but I was totally unconscious about the CAI...I guess that's a facet of modding that's not talked about very often. Everyone is gung ho about modding, but I never gave a thought to the emissions test downside to modding. I will from now on.
I had the K&N Typhoon CAI on my MINI Cooper S
It was CARB pending when I bought it, and CARB approved by the time I sold the car.
But I had no CARB sticker, and getting one from CARB when I discovered the problem at the smog test, was a minimum 4 week process (according to their help desk) even though the damn thing was approved!
Hence the very rapid swap back to stock - just glad I kept the original parts, otherwise I would have not been able to sell the MCS and buy the 996 I had lined up!
So no CAI on my 996 for me, and certainly no K&N!!!
I think you're rolling the dice - they say 'Adds 1.5 Liters cold air by eliminating muffler in airbox' which is certainly an emissions mod, and it's pretty obvious being bright red!
Suggest you call Fabspeed and ask about CARB approval.
As it's not mentioned anywhere on their website - they may not have it - Also, you'd see a CARB sticker somewhere on the added components - call to be sure.
I figured it would be an on-the-fence kind of thing. It's easy enough to replace back to stock that I won't even worry about it until it's time to SMOG.
