I changed the rear sprocket (gearing) on my motorcycle and it does make a fantastic difference.

I check the spec, and confirmed that the 997 gear ratio is indeed shorter than ours.

I was wondering which chip you guys would recommend for my '01 996.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

But, on my bike which hits well over 60 in first gear, it does make a difference to swap out the rear sprocket (which is basically like changing the gear ratios on all 6 gears) though you do sacrifice some top speed in each gear.

Also RUF sells a supercharger kit for the NA 996 and have had great results, however, they do recommend to replace high mileage engines prior to installing one of their supercharger, but the cost associated with that does not make much sense to me.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Forget the GIAC chips on the 3.4 C2 they showed no improvement on the dyno, however ROW programming with a good set of headers and high flow cats showed 20-25 WHP.
I was wondering which chip you guys would recommend for my '01 996. I would like to get the most bang for my buck.
The car is stock now, but will eventually get upgrades to airbox and Exhaust. I would like the chip to work well with these mod's as well.
Thanks,

depends on what you expect...even with chip, headers, cats, mufflers and intake, you may only see 20 -25HP, if you are lucky...which is almost undetectable on a 300HP car. Total cost for those things, is like 2-3K....if you want more save for a supercharger which is the only way to get a nice increase in 996 cars. If you just wanna do a chip, I have heard good things about GIAC....but again, you may only see a few HP if any gans at all.
In my experience, the chip just flattened out the hp output throughout the power band, power is smooth so smooth.
I have full exhaust and intake with a GIAC flash.
Like you I have an 01 C2.
But supercharger sounds very tempting, but I think Im gonna use my saved up money for a TT
our cars are a little weak down low and i think a supercharger is a great way out of it... but after talking to GMG and Hergesheimer.......everyone tells me that the NA are not really design for the supercharger... it will run, you will love it, but you taking the reliablility our of the car completely....
btw Hergesheimer were great..... thanks for the rec newport... you'lll love them....
no prob...i think its more gearing, than weakness....our cars are geard for midrange and top end performance, the opposite end of the spectrum BMWs are usually geared for the bottom and mid end...
i think the most you can do is headers, exhaust, cai, plenum, hi flow cats... and then a chip... but like newport stated... you're looking at best 30 hp and that's NOT at the wheel.....
I'm familiar with the GIAC software from other cars and it is very good. The chips are usually tuned to work with an exhaust and intake, you wont realize optimal gains until you have them done too. It adds up quick $$$. However with that said, always keep in mind the % HP you get for your money. It isn't usually a very good ratio on this motor. Forced induction is really the only way to get a good bang for your buck. Spend you money on dirvers ed and become a faster driver instead of needing a faster car.
Porsche Smile: I have spoken to many installers and thay have stated that if the supercharger, like the ones from EVO, is installed correctly that reliability should not be a factor. The EVO supercharger is designed to keep the compression ratio of the engine the same and that is an important factor. Also RUF sells a supercharger kit for the NA 996 and have had great results, however, they do recommend to replace high mileage engines prior to installing one of their supercharger, but the cost associated with that does not make much sense to me. At that point I'd rather buy a TT.
Can you provide me with some more information about GMG and Hergesheimer I would appreciate it. Would like to know what they say.
Change the gearing of the car and you should get more acceleration for the price of top speed + cash. But I think it's the best way to go, since you're not putting extra stress on the engine. Also, the EVO supercharger probably doesn't do much for the low end.
Let's get more info on changing the gear set!
I have heard many good things about the GIAC software. Indeed, a number of authorized dealers even suggested installing them (after warranty expiration of course). When my CPO is up, it's surely something that I'll consider.
Definitely a gearing upgrade will make the most difference... how come they don't make one... shortening the gears so your top speed is 160 mph would give you about equiv 350HP on a 3.4 motor....
now better yet if you can replace cogs 1-5 and leave 6 stock for cruising!... I'm surprised nobody has created a kit for our cars that works like this...
Right on Pete.
I changed the rear sprocket (gearing) on my motorcycle and it does make a fantastic difference. Perhaps it's not done on Porsche because the cost is prohibitive.
It's not really your dealers decision to make, warranty coverage is provided by PCNA. Anytime your vehicle is dealer serviced and they plug in the PiWiS computer, information from your car (i.e. does it have a chip, mileage, operating hours and everything else) is sent to Porsche. On major warranty items PCNA/PAG will check that data and the PCNA district/regional service manager for your area will check for an aftermarket chip upgrade. If they find one they will deny warranty coverage. It is theoretically possible for your dealer to cover the replacement costs out of their pocket but the chances of that happening are less than zero.
Take two Porsches equal in everyway except for gearing and run them next to each other. During a straight-line acceleration run they will trade off the lead at different speeds but over the total distance will be nearly equal (+- a few feet). Regearing
for the street
is a truthiness mod; it feels right but...
I'm not sure I agree with this comment. Whilst one may give up top speed, there's no denying that changing the gearing can result in a more powerfully torquier feeling motor. Consider the following analogy: Try launching a bicycle from a standing start while it is in 10th gear vs. 1st gear. Surely, you'll agree that it will take one a lot longer to get moving in 10th gear, yes?
Acceleration will obviously be faster in certain gears but what gears are you changing (3-5) and to what ratios? Once you add in the time it takes to shift gears this mod becomes worthless on a street car. That is why I suggest finding someone that has already spent thousands of dollars to change their gears and try to compare with a similar car. At certain distances they will get there faster and to others they won't. If they are only 5' ahead of you ($6-9k later) at one spot and maybe 3' behind at another then it would only make sense to regear for specific tracks and not the street?
Jason, good point. Indeed, I'm not even saying that I would do it on a street car. But, on my bike which hits well over 60 in first gear, it does make a difference to swap out the rear sprocket (which is basically like changing the gear ratios on all 6 gears) though you do sacrifice some top speed in each gear. Anyway, you're totally valid in saying that spending thousands for this mod is ridiculous unless you are factory sponsored and racing Willow Springs next weekend.
Forget the GIAC chips on the 3.4 C2 they showed no improvement on the dyno, however ROW programming with a good set of headers and high flow cats showed 20-25 WHP. Note - 50% race gas Sunoco 260GT Octane 104 will add 5-7 hp on its on, beyond 50% mix with pump gas you get no benefit.
Side question, is there any way to tell if your car is already chipped ? My '99 C2 was heavily optioned by the prior owner including intake and fabspeed exhaust. There's a good chance he chipped it as well - possible turned it off when he traded it in to the dealer.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Where can you get a copy of this program?
Any tach savy people on here? Isn't it possible to download this program (or anyother) and post the files on the internet? All anyone would need is a flashloader to try different programs out....
im thinking the same thing..... if the program is flash loaded into our obd port, and we can hook this up to the computer or laptop..... why can't we replicate the same thing for much much much less?
Regarding to gearing, I actually called up PowerHousii. They recommend me to get a 997 gear box, which has similar gearing as the "sports" gearing they build, but without the gear noise! I check the spec, and confirmed that the 997 gear ratio is indeed shorter than ours. Hopefully someone can try it out and tell us the difference!

<-- look at the bottom of the page; they have a laptop flashloader for Porsches. I assume it can pull the program out of the ECU and store a copy...
