So I get my car back YESTERDAY from the shop with the front end done and in PERFECT condition. New Xenon's, new bumperplugs from Eric, etc. This mother F***er at the bar next to my office comes out in his 3/4 ton pickup drunk off his *** and slams into the front of the car, rear tire off the groun, then takes off. I bolt outside, get his plate number and call it in to 911. They pick him up a couple blocks away - he's in jail right now - 2nd DUI in two weeks. No insurance. My car is seriously messed up. Makes me want to cry. Pic's will come in a few days. The SOB is going to pay. I am waiting for the flatbed to come and tow it away as I sit here, 15' from where it happened.
I am so sorry.. that's terrible. I hope that he fries.
Well, you can always file suit to recover costs. Hopefully you had good uninsured motorist coverage.
Check with the DA to make sure the also charge him w/hit and run. That should help you get restitution if and when he's convicted of the charges. You may even end up being a witness at the trial if he doesn't plead out.
Thanks you guys. He is being charged with hit and run and DUI, hopefully reckless driving as well. I do have uninsured coverage so things should be okay there. I've also called the Oregon Liquor Control Commission to start things going on the bar that served him. It's surreal. I saw the whole thing from 15' away. It was like your life flashing before your eyes and going this can't be real. I know in the whole of things it is only a car and no one was hurt which is very fortunate. But it sure sucks.
Oh does that suck! I feel for ya. Many years ago, I guy crossed two lanes of traffic and smashed the entire side of my 944 Turbo - it was like he tried to park in the passenger side. Guy had no insurance and took off. Painful. Best of luck, keep us posted.
I feel for you dude - life's a bitch!
Just nail his a$$ and make him pay.
When ever I have a major mod done on a car, something seems to go wrong almost immediately.
It all started back when I drove a really sweet '86 Golf GTi
Just had lowered Koni suspension fitted, and was on my way home from the install shop, feeling super proud of myself, when BANG!
Front drivers headlamp shatters - glass flies everywhere.
Very odd, no one in front of me on the road to kick up a rock....
I pull over, get out and find....
A DAMN BULLET HOLE IN THE FRONT EDGE OF MY HOOD!
Some MF had shot at my car, and I was standing there like an idiot, waiting for him to reload!!!!
Needless to say I jumped back in the car and burned rubber outta there.
So your not alone, and I hope my experience made you at least forget the pain for a few seconds.
OMG is right!! So sorry to hear about your car - that just sucks. At least the jackass at the Starbucks with the pickup never actually hit me. Remember, you're ok - your car can and will be fixed.
Good luck.
That
does
suck. I'm sorry your car is smashed and I hope the guy is convicted and pays for everything.
But I disagree with you about the bar. The only guy responsible for this accident is the guy driving the pickup truck. Not you, not me, and not the bar owner. I don't think you should compound the harm from this by dragging a small businessman into it.
Just my opinion.
CP
+1
The guy could have told the bar owner he was walking home, etc. The DUI hit and run guy is to blame here!
PS--Good going remembering the plate number!
Cdodkin - thanks - that did make me chuckle a bit. Scary that a bullet hit your car though. Not a whole lot you can do for that.
I just found out the guy does have insurance. His father called my insurance company back and gave them the policy info. Apparently they just got him the insurance last week after his 1st DUI, and in fact they don't even have the policy paperwork through the mail yet.
He'll be in jail at least through the weekend.
I totally understand your opinion here, and I understand the small business. I'm a sole-proprietor in an office of one. But this bar next door deals meth out the front door and there are drunks in and out constantly, and I mean every single day. I was working late one night and heard something on my door - opened it up and there are 5 guys there, one of them pissing on my door. And then the meth, no, I have not actually seen it, but the bar's mgr told me him and his wife got busted two years ago for manuf and distribution of meth in their old bar, and there are cars that come several times a day for 5 mins, in and out, never turn car off. The owner is the parent of the bar mgr and if she doesn't know what's going on there then she is a complete idiot.
On top of that, the guy had a DUI one week ago, was a regular at this joint, and they damn well knew that he had a DUI. People like to talk. His truck was easily visible through the window/door of the bar, and the bartender even stated that yeah, he was back and forth with his truck. So, this isn't an ordinary bar situation. If that were the case, I wouldn't bring it up, but man, if you guys could only see the things that go on over there. I'm a patient and tolerant person, but this was just too much.
LMAO.
Troy, I feel your pain. Someone destroyed the drivers side fender of my last car and then took off. At least you won't need the bumper plugs anymore...
Troy - I read through the first half of your post and I literally started to hyperventilate. I had to get up and go outside for a minute then come back and read the remainder of the post. That really makes me sick to my stomach! I know how I felt when I got my dent courtesy of the dealership. I figure that is the only free thing Ill ever get from the dealer.
I am really feeling bad for you! I must say that you seem to be handling it very well though. Hang in there.
Maybe Eric can make you an oversized bumper plug to cover the whole front end so no one will even notice the dents.
Oh, and one more thing. come on, post up the @&^#*$% pics!
Please know that I am not making fun of your situation. I have always found that a little humor and a good chuckle helps at times like this. Good luck with the repairs and keep us posted!
That really sucks!
Hope you don't have a long term lease on your office. I would look for a new one in another part of town.
Hope everything works out.
My condolences bro. it's a good thing you were right there so you could grab his plate#. You know, after the dust settles, you might just get enough cash out of this to do even more stuff to your sweet ride!!
The really bad part is that now your car will likely carry a carfax incident potentially making it worth less when you sell or trade. Even if it is repaired to perfection you may need to lower price by 5 to 10% to sell it. just a plain bummer.
Why is it that most of these DUI and hit and run stories involve a driver with NO FREAKING INSURANCE? Maybe there's a connection between not carrying insurance and being a totally irresponsible idiot with no judgment? With a hit and run and his SECOND DUI in that short a time period he should be suspended forever and then jailed for life at his next offense.
OMG, that's horrible especially after you have completed your front-end face-lift, Man, sorry to hear that... Though very fortunate that you were right there to witness the Hit-and-Run, quick reaction and response from your part, good for you. If that happen to me, I may freeze in shock and anger with a brain lock
Good-luck with the repairs again.
Cheers,
Downtown Milwaukie.
I've been somewhat expectant that something would happen as I get a lot of highschool kids from Milwaukie High that walk by every day, but I was thinking more along the lines of a scratch, not a 3/4 ton PU.
Okay, here are some pics. The good news is that they do have insurance. Safeco. Apparently his parents took it out for him. The policy is so new they don't even have the paperwork in the mail yet. But I do have his policy number.
Also, I'm stopping by Gran Prix Imports in Wilsonville this morning to see if I can get the name of an apprasier for diminutive value on the car.
I had a hard time getting to sleep last night. My brain just kept replaying the whole thing over and over in slow motion. I had to turn the TV on just to get my mind on something else.
This is a pic of the crappy bar establishment. The place just needs to be knocked down. I'd like to buy it and turn it into one big parking spot the Porsche.
My car was parked where the silver car in the middle is in this picture. The truck was in front of it.
WOW, that looks bad! On second thought, I don't think a giant BumperPlug is going to do the job.
BTW - it is diminished value, not diminutive value. Although, if taken to the extreme, as in "totaled," then the car could have diminutive value.
The whole thing does suck....I crenged when I saw the pictures..........
But I have to admit that I have been in bars that look alot worse then that......sorry
This infuriates me and it wasn't even my car. I feel so bad for you man. I hope you can get it all worked out. These instances here are exactly some of the reasons I won't even have one drink. You put so much on the line when you could instead have a soda, Redbull, whatever.... If it's true it's his second DUI in two weeks I don't mind paying the taxes to keep him locked up for good. Thank God you weren't walking out in front of your car when that happened. Rant Over...
Dude - the damage is not too bad. New Hood, New Bumper, two new lights... all set! (The fenders look fine, from the pictures)
bumpers and hood replacements/repaints will not hurt the value of your car - so many people get them resprayed its not an issue!
You have several things going for you, despite this idiot. First, you witnessed the destruction. You could have eaily missed the entire show by 5 minutes and no one in that bar would have said squat about how that happened. Second, the cost of repairs will not be debatable,--you just had all that work done. Finally, you don't need to deal with Eric and get any sort of bumper plugs,--you're getting an entirely new bumper now with no holes! (except you need to run a front plate in Oregon).
wow...that really sucks. As some people have already mentioned, you are in some sort of way, lucky. You were able to get the *** and he had insurance...still sucks for sure. I would reconsider parking in front of a bar next time...
I know how you feel. It make you sick when something like that happens . I was at a stand still when this toothless redneck bee itch in a F__ked Over Rebuild Dodge (FORD) truck tried to park in my back seat. The rear bumper cover was trashed, both quarter panels buckled, the air box was smashed into the AC pulley and the frame was slightly bent.
She had the never to say your car isnt damaged very much please dont get me in trouble by calling the cops. Im sure she was on something but it wasnt alcohol.
Dont get your hopes up on getting any meaningful amount from the insurance company for diminished value. Your car isnt damaged enough as far as the insurance company is concerned.
Good luck with the repairs and try to look on the bright side.
Very sorry about your car.
It reminds me of another down side to the whole SUV/4WD pick-up truck thing. Basically your low riding car is invisible to the guy perched 6 feet up in the air. Even worse if his judgement is impaired.
I also wonder how many more parking lot accidents happen because of SUVs. If you have a traditional car parked on each side of you when backing out, you can stop halfway and eyeball things in each direction over the trunks of their cars. If you have an SUV on each side of you, you're completely blind until you've backed almost completely out of the space and into the traffic lane.
I do own an SUV, and use it for some tasks, but still hate the damn things.
Wow, I really feel for you. I wish you the best of luck in resolving the situation and getting the car fixed to your satisfaction. As others have said, this guy should be locked up for a long time, two DUI's in one week is unbelieveable.
You mentioned in your original post that the truck ran up onto the front of your car hard enough that the rear wheels of the car came off of the ground. I would be really concerned that the cars chassis was bent or damaged in some way. If it was then it cannot be properly fixed and the car should be declared a total wreck. This is especially true for a high performance car because it could adversely affect the handling of the car. Have a good mechanic, one who is experienced with P-Cars, check for this and fight the insurance company to declare the car totaled if the chassis is bent. JMHO
Well, you're alone on this opinion when it comes to the law. Many a court have upheld judgments against bar owners for precisely this sort of thing. A quick search on Google will return hundreds of cases. Here one
link
in particular. Indeed, my recommendation would also be to approach the bar owner about their insurance and liability. It was only your car this time, but it very well could have been someone's child next time.
Sorry for your loss but in the big picture you did a wonderful thing by getting a drunk off of the road. He could have hit another car while he was driving resulting in someone's death. Your car will eventually be fine or replaced but the loss of life could not, good on you for your quick reaction!
Tim - thanks for the correction. I've heard both tossed around and didn't know which was correct.
I've got a couple of names of appraisers. As of current the insurance company hasn't accepted responsibility because they can't get ahold of their insured - he's still in jail!
The police department said that with the hit and run and dui (let alone the 2nd dui) he's going to be facing some issues.
A lot of you guys are so right about in the end things being lucky. There were so many people on the street it was crazy and that guy was swerving in oncoming traffic to get away. Ran two stop signs while doing it all. I was a cop could have been there for that because that was crazy. I can only imagine how much worse it would have been had he hit a person.
As for damage, the body shop is still doing a tear down, but she said there does appear to be some minor structural damage - my worst fear. They won't know the extent until tomorrow. I hope it is very, very minor. The shop is very highly recommended for high-end autos. Sunset Porsche uses them, as does Grand Prix Imports in Wilsonville, which deals in Lambo's and sort.
As for diminished value, I know that one can be a tough one, but I'm ready for battle. I talked to a guy from Grand Prix on Saturday and he said I would have a minimal loss. Than I told him that if the car had a CarFax when I bought it I very likely would have passed on the car. I then brought up the car that another Rennlister was looking at last week and had questions about the car being painted and how they were hesitating because of it. His opinion seemed to change and he agreed I could have a loss. Just depended on how well I can make my case I guess.
In regards to the bar - if you can believe this on Saturday my cleaning lady was hear around 6-7pm and said they had people out in the street drinking beer and sitting in the bar chairs. This isn't New Orleans here and drinking in the street is a huge no-no. The chairs were pulled from the bar. Man, considering what happended just a day earier you would think they have some sense. That is the BS though that I've been putting up with.
Updates will follow....
i tell ya..... see if the bar can pay for some of the damages as well or at least the dedutable......oh and are you going to do an 02 facelift? i like to call dibs on your lights.......
Since the guy has insurance I won't be out any deductible, but that is why I originally filed a complaint against the bar, just in case he didn't have insurance as the police originally thought.
I had just upgraded the lights to Xenon's, had them on for a total of one evening. They were bitch'n cool. Had just upgraded to clear sider markers too and they were sweet. I think they'll be okay.
As for 02 facelift, at this point I just need to see what the total bill is going to be first. Then I'll go shopping.
