I had my heart set on a new cayman s and did the 996 because it was less dough, just as quick and I could take my little boy and I am sure glad i did.

Suggestion

It's really not so much sacrificing work for pleasure, rather, more of a natural transfer: if the work load is reduced I can use my time better doing something else, not necessarily work-related.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, we all love to drive our 911s. And most of us are pretty commited to maintaining it well, keeping it clean, parking it in safe places, etc. All of this is fine in my book. Healthy resepct for a beloved hobby. But where I sometimes feel I may cross the line is when I have a free hour or so on the weekend and decide to go for a drive instead of playing with my kids ; or if I go home early from work to wash/wax my car instead of socializing with a colleague . There are many other examples too. Anyone else have this tension? Is it healthy? (Any psychologists out there with an informed view?) GBG

POST 2Original post

I dont know if this is normal or not but I feel the same. I had my heart set on a new cayman s and did the 996 because it was less dough, just as quick and I could take my little boy and I am sure glad i did. He loves to go for rides with dad and i feel like we are both getting some "quality time" and I dont have the guilty feeling I did leaving him home when I had the boxster. He is going on 4 years old so I figure I got another 6 or 7 years before he doesnt want to cruise with me anymore

POST 4Original post

The key is to integrate your family (and even friends) into your hobby. For example, I did my first concours (wash and shine catagory) last fall and my son helped me prepare the car. After we just missed winning by half a point he was hooked, and can't wait to do it again. My 964 rebuild is also a father/son project. My son is 13 a still wants to "cruise" with me. I think you will find that the teenagers that want to hang out with their parents have always hung out with their parents. It the parents that have never spent much time with their kids who generally find their kids want nothing to do with them when they are teenagers. Kids are like retirement planning, the earlier you start to invest in them, the greater the returns will be.

POST 5Original post

Ah... the fine line between enough and too much... Very schematically, while I'm actively employed: 1. Family 2. Work 3. Hobbies Composition and order to be changed once retirement hits I don't sacrifice family time for my hobbies, but gladly do so with work, provided it doesn't affect outcome. My work schedule is highly intense but also very flexible, and I'm fortunate enough to be able to get a lot done during unorthodox hours, so as to maximize my free time during the day, etc. It's really not so much sacrificing work for pleasure, rather, more of a natural transfer: if the work load is reduced I can use my time better doing something else, not necessarily work-related. Now, regarding the 911 in particular, at this stage it sits atop my personal free time usage list. By-and-large, I'd rather do something to/in it (no innuendo, fellas) than anything else I would have done had I not had it. Usage of hobby time includes washing, detailing, learning more about it, and, believe it or not, even driving it Within my hobbies, one could arguably say I am mildly obsessed with the 911, but overall there is no obsession. A very convenient aspect is that Family and Hobbies are not mutually exclusive: going for early morning Sunday drives with my wife in the 911 is a good example.

POST 6Original post

Bingo. It doesn't matter if they grow up interested in this stuff. The time spent together is priceless. More than this, there is huge power in kids seeing their parents earn pleasure and then experience it fully. Too many kids grow up with parents who teach them that work equals pain and frustration. Those parents are not great ads for adulthood. But a parent who is passionate about something and invites their kid in, is. Hats off to you, sir.

POST 7Original post

I think it is when you are on rennlist, dps motorsports, bumperplugs, and ebay all day. When you start to take your lunch to save every penny for those new wheels or that new aero kit. But I was a good parent and put a dvd player in the car for the little one.

POST 8Original post

good advice Rob- I hope that works for me like it has for you!

POST 9Original post

Can you get arrested for driving naked? Leather seats, heaters on ......................ohhhhhh it's an obsession!

POST 10Original post

love the advice... i think when hobby=obsession is when you can NO LONGER AFFORD IT.....

POST 11Original post

BTW, here is my #1 tip for all of you dads with young daughters... While it is easy to sit down with your son and play cars, or throw the football, it is usually a different story when your daughter says, "dad will you play Barbie with me ". While you have no desire to play with dolls you know you need to spend the quality time with your daughter, so what are you to do??? My tip to make make this work for both of you... BUY YOUR DAUGHTER ALL OF THE BARBIE CARS. So you get to "play cars " while she is convinced you both are "playing Barbie ". I could even get my daughter to have races with the barbie cars. NOTE: You must also explain to your daughters that the Barbie Boxster and the Barbie 911 ALWAYS win against the Barbie Corvette and the Barbie Ferrari!!!

POST 12Original post

NOTE: You must also explain to your daughters that the Barbie Boxster and the Barbie 911 ALWAYS win against the Barbie Corvette and the Barbie Ferrari!!! [/QUOTE] LOL....... i'll buy the Barbie Corvette and have it destroyed saying that Barbie's who drives corvette can only go fast, but can't turn...........so ONLY the Barbie Porsche is the good one......

POST 14Original post

-1, It would be plus one but it put me in debt.

POST 15Original post

Unless the Porsche is racing at Sebring in the GT2 class. Then the Ferrari driver gets to bump the 911 on the last lap and take the win....

POST 16Original post

Yeah, that sucked BIG time! What a bullsh!t move! However, if the Porsche driver had stayed toward the inside after leaving the last turn the "incident" never would have occured.

POST 18Original post

LOL @ you guys!! The Ferrari driver did a dick move by making contact, IMO. Rob, great advice...I'll make sure I'll work my obsession with my kids when we have kids.

POST 19Original post

There is a fine line, but since my next mod is a baby seat I think I'm OK - relatively speaking of course...

POST 20Original post

Yes, the Porsche needed to get real wiiiide Fellow racers say that I am extremely good at this
