Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

The 997 (non S) has a 3.6L engine and the 997S has a 3.8L engine, but I think (not completely sure) that they both use the same stock (non PSE muffler).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

However, I have read conflicting reports: some say it helps, others say no difference.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quick question: Does anyone know if the mufflers off a 3.8L 997S will fit my 996 C4S? TIA

POST 2Original post

I don't know about the mufflers, but the headers do. I have 997S (355 HP engine) headers on my 2002 996 C4S (320 HP, so, according to Porsche, slightly less restricted). However, I have read conflicting reports: some say it helps, others say no difference. As for the muffler, I let Porsche put a "J" (1.5"), or what some call Mark II mod. I did it mainly for the sound - and love it. John

POST 4Original post

COs - good question. The 997 (non S) has a 3.6L engine and the 997S has a 3.8L engine, but I think (not completely sure) that they both use the same stock (non PSE muffler). Here is a pic of a stock 997 muffler that someone posted over a year ago. They had done the "996 PSE mod" to the stock muffler. The stock 997 exhaust has a single outlet pipe like the 996 muffler, but the 997 PSE is a true "two pipe" outlet exhaust (second pic), a larger one and a smaller one. Sorry, but I don't have a pic of just the 997 PSE muffler itself to be able to show the difference.

Thanks Tim, reason I asked is coz' I'm 2nd in line to a possible 3.8L set of cans free + shipping. It was already taken, but the person hasn't acted on it yet, so the owner told me he'd let me know if that doesn't happen. I want to be sure before I get them shipped to me.
