At the bend point measure 10mm down (since the bend is about 1mm) and draw a line on the clip...fill it up check by placing the paper clip even with the bottom of the hole and extending the marked portion into the depth of the fluid, add a little more, check, add a little more until i was on the mark or just slightly over

For some reason i thought it changed with the engine as well.

So my advice is to visit a Porsche dealer parts department and see if someone there can tell you the proper fill for your car's transmission based on the VIN.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

When I went to replace my Boxster's original battery after 6+ years of service, the parts department manager looked up the part # and found it had changed.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Guys, going to replace my manual 6 transaxle oil here shortly, i have a 2002 Carrera 4; I will also be doing the front differential as well.
Using Porsche oil
But I have seen conflicting info. Some say fill the oil to the bottom of the fill hole. In 2-3 other places people say no, its 11mm to the bottom of the fill hole using a paper clip or whatever for the dipstick. In other cars I have done, a few mm lower than the bottom is normal.
So which is it for a 996 6 manual transaxle? I don't want to overfill as that becomes a big problem once the liquid is warm
thanks
I recently did mine to the bottom of the hole. I have noticed no leakage or other odd side effects as a result.
As long as its a high qual synthetic, thermal expansion should be minimal
Did mine a couple of weeks back on a 99 C2. I let it run from the oil filler. I mean how do I measure 11mm. Load of *****. Make sure that your car is level on stands or whatever and you should be good to go. Better using a pump on the oil bottle as there isn't much room at the filler hole. Only snug tighten the filler cap when done.
In the past, the way i measured MM down is bend a paper clip 90 degrees. At the bend point measure 10mm down (since the bend is about 1mm) and draw a line on the clip...fill it up check by placing the paper clip even with the bottom of the hole and extending the marked portion into the depth of the fluid, add a little more, check, add a little more until i was on the mark or just slightly over
Yes I do have a pump to pump the oil....
on other cars, they specify typically around 5mm low....11 is considerably deeper...so this is why i wanted to know if that was official or if what pelican parts has posted is off???
A digital copy of the 996 factory workshop manual says to fill the transmission housing with oil to the bottom edge of the oil filler opening.
However, this document is dated 1997. Thus it could be later models have a different fill spot.
So my advice is to visit a Porsche dealer parts department and see if someone there can tell you the proper fill for your car's transmission based on the VIN.
Yes, but the printed date is 1997. I've always been told to confirm fluid levels with the parts department or service department based on the VIN of the car in question. (Also parts #'s are tied to the car's VIN. Heck even the battery specification is tied to the VIN. When I went to replace my Boxster's original battery after 6+ years of service, the parts department manager looked up the part # and found it had changed. Porsche upped the battery capacity: AH's, CCA's; and so the battery I got matched the called for AH's and CCA's.)
I could just see trying to have that conversation with my local parts or service department. No doubt a line mechanic or two has a clue, but he's not the guy you get to talk to....
Just like every other manual transmission out there with a conventional fill hole, fill it until the oil starts to come out. That's what I did. No need to over think this.
Well, I have no problem getting access to any line tech I want to talk to, though I always ask the SM if I can speak to a tech. Most of the time he gives me permission, in fact all of the time, but he'll once in a while mention that they are busy, which I take to mean no and do not go back to the shop area.
Also, the parts manager is quite helpful when I drop in to get some info on a part or order one.
And often I do get to talk to a tech. 'course, I can't just walk in and talk to a tech for hours. Also, I leave those "how many IMSB's have you replaced" questions at home. And last but not least I respect the fact they are on their job and busy so I ask first if they have a minute or two for a question and if they do then I ask it. If not I end the discussion before it begins. There's always another day.
Hasn't been too bad. I knew going in servicing costs were going to be higher than say my 96 Mustang. And I drive a lot of miles. 275K miles coming up on the Boxster and the Turbo is coming up on 115K miles. One of them shortly is going to get another 5K miles on it PDQ. 'course, both are due for an oil/filter service. Got to keep the cars serviced and in good repair.
I wonder if this is where that 11mm number came from and the board on pelican screwed up and used it for both the 996 and boxster.
fyi the service manual in 1997, isn't the 6speed on the 2002 different or did they keep it the same? For some reason i thought it changed with the engine as well.
You really think 1cm in level makes a difference? There is a crapload of extra room left for expansion even if the level is a little higher than maximum. On top of that there is a vent valve at the top of the transmissio to equalize the pressure. You would have to push the transmission to its limit for a very long time for that little bit of extra oil would make any issues and the issue would probably by that some would come out the vent but these have to be some extreme cases.
YES!!! it categorically can make a difference depending on the transmission design. There is a reason the 5spd boxster is 11mm below!
With other cars, not my 996, but i have seen overfilled transmissions blow leaks like crazy; and the delta below the fill hole is by design. So yes it can matter
For the 996, maybe it doesn't. But before I screw it up having validation is a worthy discussion. FYI my local dealership isn't that helpful.
Bro, fill it to the bottom of the threads and be done with it. If you mess this up, will your 996 explode? Also, good choice using the OEM Porsche gear oil/fluid. Shifts better with it compared to other brands/blends.
