Regardless of what you decide for the mounts, I would definitely replace the sway bar links.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
So after considering all the comments and suggestions provided in other threads (thank you again, all who contributed!) I have decided on the ROW030. Mainly because I am worried about clearance with my LNE +2qt deep sump and don't want to lower any more than absolutely necessary. ROW seems to give me 1/2 inch or so less drop than coilovers at tallest setting.
For those of you that have had the ROW030 kit done and still remember, did you change the front top bearings and rear strut mounts as well, or just reused the originals? Mine have 82k on them and I'd hate to have the install stalled because of worn top bearings or worn and cracked (?) strut mounts.
Thoughts from those very familiar with suspensions and suspension parts? This will see frequent but light track duty (ie, no wheel to wheel, prob going 7/10 max during open track days. I'm not that competitive anymore but like to get my need for speed out...hey, it's just therapy! Cheaper and more effective than a couch session! :-)
Should I go ahead and just do it (bearings, mounts) or save the bucks for other things? About c. $270 right and left, front and rear, parts only. I'm assuming no extra labour since they are putting in the ROW030 parts. (am I mistaken about this last part?)
Also, does anyone have any RECENT experience with Lucent in West LA?
Thanks!
RoW030 kit does not include the strut mounts. Replace the front and rear mounts. I have the Row030 kit from the factory. My car has 49,000 miles on it and I get a scrunch noise sometimes when I hit a bump. I am replacing my shocks along with new strut mounts, bellows and bump stops. Will probably change the end links afterwards.
Thanks for your comments. yes I was told the mounts are to be reused, and I asked if they are known to wear, which expanded to what reused parts from old suspension are prone to wear?
I was told front top bearings (spring / strut) and rear mounts can wear, though not always and not even typically. This was off a parts diagram and the parts advisor seemed to also have past experience dealing with the ROW kit.
Is it worth it to get them anyway, so in case mine are worn the install won't get stalled waiting for parts, or is it so unlikely don't get them and take the chance I'll need them?
That's my question.
Thanks.
Fwiw, I've had strut mounts on all my cars last easily over 100k+. Unless you live on terrible roads or are tracking it every weekend, I highly doubt yours would be worn to warrant replacement.
If you're on the KK schedule though, disregard everything I've said and just replace them and ship me your old ones.
What is your tolerance for taking it apart later to replace them? Because if you are going to do it, now is the time. Regardless of what you decide for the mounts, I would definitely replace the sway bar links. In my experience those are about the first thing to wear out in the suspension, which is pretty damned robust by modern standards. At 95k I can tell that my struts are worn out, but the car is clunk and shimmy free. Were this a BMW I would have probably done bushings twice by now.......
thanks, Alpine, onewhippedlittlepuppy.
since the ROW030 include new front and rear sway bars, wouldnt their bushings and links also be included in the kit? or not?
good point about bushings; I have a 94 vehicle that squeaks and moans every time it goes over anything but glass smooth surfaces.
adds character, though...
:-)
I would disagree on PM on end links as they can be changed out in about 10 min if it were to ever go bad. I expect the endlinks to go on BMW's on a regular basis but the stiffer chassis of the 996 helps in prolonging endlink life IMO compared to other cars.
Probably true, but at 82k it's pretty safe to assume that they are ready for replacement. I prefer to do a job once, and favor prevention over failure.
If it's any help here's a complete list of parts which you will need if you intend to overhaul everything on the suspension.
I bought the shocks, springs and ARBs and the the list below is the kit to rebuild them into complete struts and fit them.
You might notice that there are 2 compensating plates listed with different thickness. I wasn't sure which one to use at the time soI bought them both.
