I have to admit, I took one look at that lock socket, knew I'd loose it, and just replaced with 4 plain lugs.

Home, new (to me) 17" wheels with basicly brand new Blizzak LM 25V's that I picked up on the cheap...(minus one bolt per wheel, I will not drive it until I get that fixed) I have been blessed by a fellow Rennlister who no longer wishes to keep his bolts, and we are making a trade, so I should be back up and running soon)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

24 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK... cleaning the car a couple weeks ago, wheels off...then one day driving I heard a "clunk" like ??? something fell off the car or I ran over something...wierd.. Anyhow, I picked up some new wheels and tires today (set of 17" turbo twist with brand new looking Blizzak LM-25's off craigslist for $350 !!) came home and prepped for the swap to the new "winter tires" and ..... WHERE IS MY WHEEL LOCK KEY??? OMG! is that what that was that fell off the car? did I leave it on the stud and it fell off on the highway?? SON OF A BLIZZAK!! OK, now what? HELP - ! signed "Bonehead"

POST 2Original post

Take it to the dealer they'll be able to get it off and replaced.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

WAAAA the dreaded "D" word.. that doesnt sound "rennlist like" Where are the "drill it out" and "smash a socket" on it posts...... come on guys anything but the big D !!!

POST 4Original post

go back to where you heard the clunk and look for the key.... oh, bring a flashlight ... you got all winter to look for it.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5984706

was thinking about that one, but something told me my life was worth more than $100.... oh that would be my wife saying... "are you stupid! on the freeway looking for a little socket?" Thanks Hunny - dammit anyhow!

POST 6Original post

I had a supra and lost my wheel lock... took it to my mechanic and they had a tool that grabs (bites) the wheel lock. Went with lugs and never looked back. After that, i think wheel locks are a waste (and I live in NJ, theft capital). Wheel thefts are old school, they'll steal your HID lights, cats, wheels or will just tow your car if they really want to. BTW $5 for OEM lugs.

POST 7Original post

Perhaps this may be cheaper. http://www.wheelenhancement.com/inde...t=AccLugsLocks

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Lugs? = Studs with Nuts I have a question on those, the stock bolts have that washer ring thing (my guess is to help protect the soft aluminum wheels from damage caused by turning of steel into it) how do the stud kits overcome this? do the nuts gouge the wheels? I have been thinking of spacers (7mm rear - 14 mm front) and know I will need the studs for that (with this question, that is one reason I have not done it yet) Anyhow, tomorrow I will pick up 4 studs just to get the car rolling again (and drive really slow down the freeway while going to work, with my head out the window) but if I knew about the above question, it would help down the road.... (no pun intended)

POST 9Original post

Don't feel bad. I left the oil filter wrench on mine and started the car a week later and heard a loud metallic sound. I thought I had grenaded the engine, but it was just the wrench hitting the floor and rolling around.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 5985104

lugs=bolts (same that is used now)... if you get spacers, you will need longer bolts. So, if you put on 7mm spacer, you need to get 7mm longer bolts than the stock bolts. you can get them here: http://www.automotion.com/productpag...+Wheel+Spacers

POST 11Original post

I have to admit, I took one look at that lock socket, knew I'd loose it, and just replaced with 4 plain lugs. Luckily (as mentioned earlier) the dealer can look up the code.

POST 12Original post

I suppose that's a good reason NOT to use the locking wheel bolts/nuts...

POST 13Original post

Did the exact same thing with the Cayenne. Luckily it was in my neighborhood, and went back and found it laying in the street.

POST 14Original post

Nice buy on wheels and tires, sure beats just the price for new Blizzaks!

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 5984536

Get thee to the local dealer. They typically have a set of ALL the wheel lock keys (there are only 30, at least for the 2000 MY 996 I have), and can try each one until they find the one that fits. Then you can buy a new one (I think they're $30 or so). Or, if you still have the plastic bag the key originally came in, it has the part # on it, including which key out of 30 it is. I went thru all this last summer when I was changing a flat and my wheel lock key split in half (yes, I'm REALLY that strong :-). Rather than towing my car in, my local dealer looked at my split key, handed me the 5 or so that looked close, and just asked me to bring back the others once I figured out which one fit. They didn't even charge me for the one I kept. Bob

POST 16Original post

Ivangene, I have the 'kit' that has the socket that 'bites' into the locking lug. PM me if you don't get a new lock/key from the dealer and I'll let you use it. Or just email me at '[email removed]' as I think that would be quicker. Good Luck, Patrick

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

UPDATE: OK, mt dealer took off my lock bolts free of charge, I asked how much for the key, $50 (plus tax) - Then asked how much for stock replacement "regular" bolts - $12/ea plus tax.... RIP THE HELL OFF!!!! Thanked them for taking mine off and assured them I would be back... Yea, when I need to be raked over a bed of coals! Home, new (to me) 17" wheels with basicly brand new Blizzak LM 25V's that I picked up on the cheap...(minus one bolt per wheel, I will not drive it until I get that fixed) I have been blessed by a fellow Rennlister who no longer wishes to keep his bolts, and we are making a trade, so I should be back up and running soon) Here are some ****** for the Pics....errr visa versa Yea, the rims have been dropped sunny side down... some marks... but for winter - I am good with them!

Did they promise to give you a "reach around" if you were willing to bend over!

POST 19Original post

$12 each doesn't sound so bad to me considering that we've had discussions recently about how some have been quoted more.

I had a quick fix idea while waiting for my replacements (since I am "thrifty") Milled a HEX bolt out of the "locks" and then a socket fit right on...Gets me thru for now
