Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My wife's Bimmer has a network of fine scratches that only show up when the wipers are used in a light rain... looks almost like ice crystalizing when the wipers pass over them. I saw the thread about Eastwood's products, but I wandered down to Napa Auto Parts to see what they had. The guy (actually the kid) said I should use Meguiar's Fine Cut Cleaner on it. Anyone think that is a good idea?

POST 2Original post

Contact an automotive glass shop. They will have a better idea of what will work best on tempered automotive glass. Chad

POST 3Original post

Save your money on the fine cut cleaner it won't do anything to help. It is designed and engineered for clear coat paint not glass. Your best bet is to used a glass specific polish and more than likely you will need a rotary polisher/sander to apply it. Most glass shops have a host of different polishes they use. Personally I would take the car to the glass shop and for about $50-75 bucks let them polish it. Be for warned the success rate is very small. If you can feel the scratches at all with your finger nail, then it is highly unlikely any polish will fix the problem. Reputable shops can give you a good idea of the chance of being able to improve the problem.

POST 4Original post

Apply some rain x to see if that helps. Also, are you sure it's not your wiper?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Difficult to imagine it's the wiper, the scratches go in all directions. They resemble the sum of dancing car wash felt and washing/rubbing with window cleaner...

POST 6Original post

Would a glass shop be able to polish out light pitting on the windshield? Kris

POST 7Original post

Light pitting as in small rock chips? Those have to be filled with resin which is sold at auto parts store for $10. Give Rain X as it's supposed to seal surface to repel rain. Get those towelette ones which works great. $1-2 for a pack.

POST 8Original post

BMW wipers suck. I replaced them with some cheapo's from Walmart and the problem went away on my 740IL.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No longer factory blades.... not the issue I'm afraid.

POST 10Original post

Lee...Have her drive without the windshield. Much better visibility. You won't need the wipers and she'll always be wide awake while driving. But, come to think of it...this is Oregon, so maybe it wouldn't be a good idea after all. Disregard this post.

POST 11Original post

You can clean/polish the windshield with BonAmi and a terry towel. It might remove some of the finer scatches. I have used it with some success. I use it to clean before I put on RainX.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

StanSoph... That sounds look a great place to start!

POST 13Original post

rainx has helped with a pitted windshield int the past for me

POST 14Original post

I only notice the pitting driving into the sun. If you look very closely you can see it. I am going to take it by a glass shop and see what they think.

POST 15Original post

I had scrathes on my side window, only product that worked well was Blue Magic.

POST 17Original post

Yes, Blue Magic polish that is used for metal, and aggressive detailing to help remove scratches on paint. I also use it mixed with polish to remove fine scratches on my cab top back window. Find it to be great universal heavy duty cleaner/polish.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ended up using Rain-X. Worked great!
