Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Someone tested the flow in a 996TT using a shop vac and an ultrasensitive air flow meter on one of the forums a few months ago.
Leading evidence: 'Test flow in a 996tt' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check engine faults due' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I believe that people who use the oiled filters have more check engine faults due to the MAS.

Suggestion
I believe it gives a slight increase in power and makes the idle better but that was from a dirty filter to a clean bmc.

Suggestion
However I have had to replace the MAS HOWEVER, it was not from the oil of the bmc filter.

I have been using K&N for years in various types/makes of cars - Porsche, BMW, MB - AMG, etc without any problems.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After I cleaned the bmc btw the sensor was fine and there was no difference when I changed it out - precautionary etc.
Stick with the stock filter and replace it every 15k miles, and remove leaves/debris more frequently if necessary. My opinion is dealing with an oiled filter is more trouble than it's worth, extra airflow capability is pretty much useless compared to a stock, CLEAN filter, and if one of these filters is improperly oiled, they can let dust into your engine!
But then again, there are plenty of people who swear by their air filter power "increases"...
The free flow filters are proven to flow more air than a paper filter. I have used them for years in all types of cars, and had no adverse problems. Theoretically they are an improvement for increased air flow and a horsepower improvement for any engine. And I could tell the difference in every car I put one in. I only know that a K&N is a good product. I never used a BMC.
Someone tested the flow in a 996TT using a shop vac and an ultrasensitive air flow meter on one of the forums a few months ago. The K&N flowed very slightly less than a new stock filter. The stock filter had more pleats than the K&N. There have been MAS failures from over oiling the K&N when they are cleaned.
I have a K&N in my 3000GT VR-4 with no problem. However, I beliece that the MAS in the 996 is very tempermental and sensitive, and is a very common cause of the check engine light. Already had it twice in 5K miles with the stock filter. The oil can muck up the MAS causing it to fault. It prob isn't a big deal maybe you will be lucky but is can be annoying. Nothing shoud happen to the engine though as long as you make sure the MAS is fuctioning. In my opinion, not worth the hassle of upgrading the intake unless you already have headers and an exhaust. my .04 cents

I have a bmc. It is great. I believe it gives a slight increase in power and makes the idle better but that was from a dirty filter to a clean bmc. However I have had to replace the MAS HOWEVER, it was not from the oil of the bmc filter. IT was filthy and I didn't clean it that much, plus and I think this more important, my cam cover seal is leaking and puking into the engine compartment and if you look at the bottom of the airbox there are holes where it can suck in from outside the fresh air scoop. After I cleaned the bmc btw the sensor was fine and there was no difference when I changed it out - precautionary etc.
