Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
I know a couple of 996 with the same engine that have over 150.000 Kms and are still running very strong.
Leading evidence: 'Run very strong' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run very strong' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Am I to understand that the general concensus is the the 996 is only good for 100,000 miles? I typically keep a car for 8yrs or so. From some of the posts, it sounds like you can't keep these cars that long. I had planned on keeping mine as a weekend driver after it's daily driver duty was completed. It sounds like unless you're prepared to buy new engines, you can't plan to keep the thing long term. Am I reading this correctly? I was under the impression these were well made cars and engines......Mine will never be raced if that makes a difference.
I haven't heard anything like this, so I'll be anxious to see others' posts - I've always been told that if you properly maintain these cars, 200,000 miles (or more) is possible - I know I've heard of and seen a fair number of air cooled Porsches still on the road with tons of miles
Since 2/3 of all Porsches EVER built are still on the road, and that includes plenty of water cooled 924, 944, 968, 928 cars from the 70s & 80s I don't think you have anything to worry about.
The bad experience of a few is not the general consensus. I truly feel sorry for them and hate to see any car have problems, but those are isolated cases and not the "status quo". I plan on keeping mine for many years to come.
skipp, even if your original engine sees 200,000miles b4 a rebuild/replacement, thats a long time. by then, motor costs will drop even further so replacement and enjoyment of your car for another 100-200,000 miles might be possible.

omar
I don't know how you got that it is the "general concensus" that the M96 is only good for 100k? There are plenty of reports of cars far exceeding that figure! I plan on keeping my cars past that mark. For an expert opinion (rather than some internet chatter) check out this article from Excellence Magazine.
M96 Reliability
thanks to all the responses......I love my car and will keep it for many years to come....just wanted some confirmation after reading the doom and gloom
I imagine that a 996 would easily last 200K miles without a rebuild if it were driven like a Toyota. On the other hand if an owner drives the car like it was stolen and tracks his car regularly, it would be highly unlikely that the engine will last 200K miles witout a rebuild. Consider how many factory hand built engines fail in an endurance race. So how long a Porsche engine will last will be a more of an indication of how the car was driven rather than the quality of the engine itself.
