I haven't worked on cars regularly in a long time, but I paid my way through school as an Assistant Mechanic - we used Snap On tools only - they're warranted for life and they're much stronger than Craftsman.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
I need to overhaul the sorry compilation of tools I have. Given the choice between Sears Craftsman - Home Depot Husky - Snap On - Canadian Tire Mastercraft... which one do you guys (gals) favore.
I'd like to finally buy a set that I won't trash in the next 5 yrs. Any recommendations ?
I've always used Craftsman. I suppose there are better / more expensive tools out there, but they have always done the job.
I think they still replace them for free if you break them. That was always the case.
Husky is starting to get a lot of their stuff made in China, which means it's junk.
Craftsman is inexpensive, good quality, USA made and replaced no questions asked.
Snap-on is a lifetime investment.
I've used Crafstman over the years.... for the money it's good quality, although there are some things they don't make (1/2" drive 6pt sockets) that would be nice.
I recently got a set of the Facom ratchets, and boy, are they ever nice. If I was starting over again, I'd like to do it all Facom, but then again with the Crafstman, I've split sockets in half on a sunday, gone to Sears, got a new one and I'm back working within the hour. There's something to be said for that.
I just got a SnapOn Torque Wrench - it rocks. A very nice tool to be sure.

I like the Facom tools expensive but they are well made. I have been collection Facom for about a year now. I have a 350+ Craftsman Mechanic set it is a good set to cover the necessities. As Mastermind said it is nice to take them back 7 days a week for replacement. Also the Facom Screwdrivers ROCK! they are very comfortable to work with.
I have quite a large collection of Crapsman. Large enough where there is some redundancy (6pt and 12pt, standard and deep, offset box and combo, etc.). I've broken several pieces over the past many years, and it is still a hassle to go and return/exchange assuming they have it in stock--especially for a socket which is only a couple of dollars (hardly worth the gas) and especially when you're in the middle of something. Watch out for their products like torque wrenches which, although, you use them with your hands are not considered hand tools and do not have a lifetime warranty. With all that said, they are pretty reliable and decent for the money.
I've had a few Husky tools, and I've broken some on the first use. Except for my Husky torque wrench (which does have a lifetime warranty), I won't buy Husky tools again. They are too poor quality IMHO. I am a weekend warrior and do a lot of house projects, but I do not make a living by using them, so cannot justify (with rare exceptions) the nicer tools. You can buy redundancy/variety in Craftsman and still be less than the real nice tools. For power screwdriver/drill bits and things, run as fast as you can away from anything that says Vermont American on it. I like DeWalt for that kind of stuff, but sadly, Home Depot doesn't carry their bits anymore. Getting slightly more off topic, my Makita power tools have been the best.
Most all of my tools are Craftsman and then I supplement with another brand when Crafstman doesn't carry what I am looking for. It also helps to belong to the "Crafstman Club" since they offer deep discounts on select items throughout the year. I have saved some serious cash that way! The Crafstman website has the info for joining.
Are you sure about that? I swear I have 6pt. 1/2 drive sockets...I will have to check when I get home. However, now that I think about it, I bought them in a set so maybe they don't sell them individually.
Craftsman and SnapOn. I recently took in all my screwdrivers and two ratchets and had them replaced for new ones without any hassel... can't beat that. There are some specialty tools that I can only find in SnapOn and then there are those emergencies stops at PepBoys/AutoZone for whatever brand of tools is in stock to get me out of a situation...
I haven't worked on cars regularly in a long time, but I paid my way through school as an Assistant Mechanic - we used Snap On tools only - they're warranted for life and they're much stronger than Craftsman. They have US and metric sizes. They're pricey but I never saw a broken tool.
You can also get bigger/more complete sets on fleaBay. Don't get suckered into the smaller/starter sets that Sears may have on sale for cheap. That 7-piece socket set winds up costing more once you add the 3 or 4 more larger individual sockets that you need. Try to get the 11-piece set (or whatever) the first time.
All Those name brand are good, However if price is the issue, we are lucky enough to have the Canadian tire Brand name, They offer a life time over the counter exchange warranty and are priced 15 - 20% less then Sears brand name. With that being said if price is not an issue then I say go Snap On ..or look into Mac Tools!
I use Craftsman...
And BTW, anyone know where did the class action lawsuit against Sears go, for (allegedly) false touting Craftsman tools as 'Made in the USA'?
