Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone have a picture of the "latest" M96 Rear Main Seal? Or even better a comparison pic of last gen and current gen seals. I have a new RMS but I do not know if it is the current generation.

POST 2Original post

The old one has small dimples all the way around. The new one has square holes, I've seen some with fewer squares and some with more. This one below was built in Feb 2011 and is the latest P/N.

POST 6Original post

The link you provided includes the IMS flange with new seal. Which the IMS flange by itself P/N 99610502401 goes for around $100 so the price they list is not unreasonable. However I'm not sure the logic behind only replacing the IMS flange if you are going to go this far. Perhaps unless you are doing all of this work yourself. Considering the RMS seal is only a $15 part or so, and the latest one as of 2011 is 99710121201 (purchase only from a reputable source or dealer because they will check to see if this part has been superseded/replaced by a newer better part, plus you will get fresh parts typically). Well... I suppose that depends on how much you want to replace as part of a transmission drop and flywheel removal. A lot of people pretty much insist on replacing the clutch, RMS, IMSB with LNE ceramic hybrid, and AOS all when this happens. Others elect to replace the flywheel at the same time. But if you've done those things recently or have a different way to deal with the IMSB hype, then... At bare minimum, you want to replace all the flywheel bolts since they are single use stretch only. P/N 99907309202 qty 8. If the IMS flange is leaking (and you don't have a LNE ceramic retrofit), then replace the seals and micro encapsulated bolts there... (and inspect your bearing). Not sure that a new flange is warranted as per the link you posted (although I do remember reading a few TSBs about newer parts there). Here would be the parts you would go for on a 2002+ minus the flange (which itself should be reusable). 99970739240 qty 1 small ims center support oring 99921715009 qty 3 ims flange micro encaps bolt 99610511201 qty 1 large ims flange seal qty 1 green thread locker as well as flange sealant. But aside from that you can pretty much bolt everything back on (FW, clutch, pressure plate), assuming they are all in good condition. You can safely even just do the RMS by itself by purchasing only the RMS seal and the flywheel bolts. All of the other parts can basically be bolted back on. (But a small piece of advice that if you are paying someone to do the labor, it might make sense to spend more money on parts since the labor is substantial in comparison). The RMS replacement requires a special tool to insert properly. If you are doing it on your own and even want to build your own tool, I love this thread from Kyle, but have heavily modified mine from his original specs if you are interested. I've put ten thousand or more miles on my car using this tool, and I'm sure Kyle has put even more on his... http://reutterwerk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18315

Nice post logray. I think that you could highlight this one. So everyone remembers how important it is to replace these bolts. I had that same RMS on the gasget kit that I bought from pelican.
