Case in point, you won't be able to use a 02-05 case half from a 996 (3.6L) if you have a 99-01 engine (which is a 3.4L).

Im not seeing any reason a individual engine case half could not be swapped with another to replace a damaged half. The rotating assembly is contained in its own aligned carriage. The only difference i could see in one half to another may be a couple thou change in deck height from manufacturing tolerances. That can be easily overcome by a quick surface cut and or head gasket adjustment. Thoughts on this from anyone experienced with major M96 engine rebuilds? Im sure the major porsche engine rebuilders are doing this, hoping they will chime in on anything i may be overlooking that would eliminate this possibility...

I'm guessing you would be very lucky to find a donor case half whose crankshaft & ims tube bores are perfectly aligned to the half you want to match it to. And I think you would be even more lucky to find one for sale by itself for a price that makes sense versus other options out there.

I found a case really cheap, thats why i am asking. Depending on the maufacturing process, they could be perfectly aligned. I guess i should call some rebuilders who have tried or done to to see if that is the case...
