Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, Started into my Kenwood Nav install on my 02 C2 and am stuck on getting the dang GPS antenna cable run from the spot by the Dash LED down through that hole to where the headunit is. Also having trouble getting the dang AC controller cables moved down to the new location at the bottom of the dash stack. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but I don't see how anyone can navigate around that dash enough to move those cables inside. I can't see how it is possible to get the GPS antenna cable dropped through the LED cable hole, and pull it down to the head unit...it seems the only hole I was accessing was a cable tunnel that did not go to the headunit.... Anyway...need some recommendations for a top notch Orange County (CA) stereo installer that would be willing to finish up my install. Someone in the Irvine/Costa Mesa area would be the closest. Anyone have any suggestions on an installer with top notch 996 experience? PS. When I get a few minutes, I will take pictures of my new car and do my newbie post. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

POST 2Original post

Save your money and try again. The GPS deal isn't as hard as you are making it out to be. With your unit and all the guts out of the dash, you can get your left arm in there and feel for the antenna cable being fed with your right. Put the cable into the hole and look for it to dangle down with a flashlight through the gaping hole in your dash. To make it easier for you to find it, place a flashlight outside of the glass and pointing down into the antenna hole so you can see the light path from inside your car. Moving the AC control cables is a bit of a pain in the butt but not really that hard. You need to get with them from the driver's side unless you have already removed your sub from the passenger side. There is barely enough room to get the harness terminations past the framework and into where you want them. Keep trying. You may have to spread things slightly more to get them past but you can do it.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the words of encouragement...new day, might give it another shot. I tried reaching my hands up to get the GPS cable, but I couldn't quite get them together. It seems that there are a couple of big ducts that are blocking things...I tried to see the cable after feeding it in a few times, but could not, so I assumed I was feeding it into a tunnel, or behind the wide ducting in the dash. I will give it another shot.

Viejo auto stereo in Mission viejo, on Via fabricante does a great job if you end up needing help. I had them put my Kenwood system in.

POST 5Original post

I think that I also had to break out one of my round mirrors on a stick and try to see into the hole at one point. Are you doing this with or without the LED in place?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am removing the LED...the mirror idea is a good one. I tried again this morning and am so close to putting my hands together but can't get the wire. I think my hands are too big as I am really close to squeezing it in where I need to be.

POST 7Original post

Here is a trick I use to run wire...Get some heavy gauge wire so its really stiff....you can run that by feeding it into the hole. It wont flex as much, so you can feed it and bend it as you need...then once you get to the point where you can reach the other end of the wire, tie your GPS wire to your lead wire and pull it through....Also I think when I did mine...I ran it under the passenger side dash, and around by the windshield....

POST 8Original post

In situations like that, I like to use a piece of small diameter stiff wire (mechanics wire or the kind that you sometimes see used on hanging plant baskets) and simply tape the wire I'm trying to route to one end. It'll give you more reach, and the stiffness of the wire will allow you to push it through instead of trying to reach up from underneath to grab it. Edit: What he said.

I live in Orange County New York... does that work for you? The REAL OC!! Not really, kind of sad actually.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I went to an installer, had a somewhat poor experience, but we will see if things get fixed in the end....going back when there is more time. I have very noticeable ground noise with the DNX7100...anyone else have ground noise (whining) with a Kenwood in a 996?

POST 11Original post

Yes Porsches are notorious for ground noise. You need to VERY carefully route power lines AWAY and SEPERATELY from all audio lines...also you have to make sure you have a very good ground. If the installer is not VERY familiar with Porsches then you will have issues...If all else fails..call Rod, give home a consulting fee and he can help you solve your issues.... www.caraudioinnovations.com or jamey rawlings at rawlings audio in Pasadena..... [email removed] with an email address like that, you know he knows ALOT about Porsche installs.....
