There's not a huge market for used 911s, as they are, or rather, the perception is that they are expensive cars to own and maintain.

The reserve is most likely what scared most bidders off--people don't like to think they're wasting their time by getting their sights set on a car that they truly don't know if they can own simply because they don't know the reserve price.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Wish I could call it simply "summary". It was fun, and I'm glad I did it, but no sale on my '99 C2:

I am considering trading my car in at the end of the month with a "reasonable" offer on the table from the dealer (high end of Edmunds/KBB trade value). Of course that's not what I want, but very little activity from our classified section or the PCA site. Posted on ebay last week.
The 7 day auction just ended. I had 882 people view the listing (their counter records only 1st time views). 20 people signed on to "watch" the item. First bid came in about day 4. Yesterday, 3 more bids came in. Ironically at EXACTLY what has been offered in trade.
Obviously, I set my reserve several thousand above the dealer offer to compensate fror the risks and hassles of a private sale. Went to bed hopeful with the handful watching and bids I've had that I'd see some action at auction end.
But no.
All in all, though, I feel good about the $50 it cost, as I got a lot of eyes on it. In that regard it served it's purpose, and they seemed serious in that the bids were only 10% short of my target......
I had very similar experience with ebay and at the end, it did not sell. IMO, unless you have something highly demanded or very rare, these auction style sale will naturally attracts a lot of people looking for a bargain.
As far as trade in goes, dealers in my area (Los Angeles) never goes by edmunds or kbb trade-in value. They normally give you wholesale numbers or slightly more to make the deal. I guess it all depends on how much money they are making on the new car or in some cases, how badly do they want to move that new unit. I don't have access to these wholesale numbers but I see people post them here from time to time... anyone?
If you are still trying to get top dollar for your car, I would try other channels like cars.com or autotrader. I had better luck with both of these in the past.
Good Luck!

If the dealer was offering you on the high end of trade-in and you put your reserve several thousand dollars above that, I'm not surprised it didn't sell. If you set the reserve a thousand dollars below the dealer offer, there's a good chance there would have been enough interest to push the sell price above the dealer's offer.
Interesting thread. I am selling my C4 04 now in Europe. I have to put it on the net in Germany as there are not too many buyers for Porsches in Czech. I had it there as the cheapest in C4 when you search by year and only got 1 call from someone who was too cheap. Just renewed the ad now.
Any tips and what else I should do? Also do dealers really shaft you on a trade in?
Most dealers are only going to offer book value for trade in, unless they think they can sell it on their lot. An 04 with low miles would probably get a trade in price closer to retail than an older 99 ever would.
Most '99's here in the US are headed to the auction and dealers will usually only pay what they will get from there minus their costs. All in all not a good situation if you are trading in. The only saving grace in some US states is that your trade reduces the tax you pay on the new car. Here in NJ the lousy $20,000 they would give you on a '99, saves $1,400 on the new car taxes.
I have had great luck with cars.com and (surprisingly) craigslist. Lots of good pictures helps sell a car too, and a little patience. There's not a huge market for used 911s, as they are, or rather, the perception is that they are expensive cars to own and maintain. Price it fairly and be willing to negotiate if you are in a hurry.
As for my friend in Prague, if it is priced too low, that may scare people off who think it's too good to be true. I would suggest pricing it a little bit higher and then let a prospective buyer negotiate the price down.
Best of luck to both of you,
Michael
