Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Run 2-3 bars off the bottom' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill " these cars' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

its pretty common that "filling" these cars with oil results in leaking, smoking, poor running and more worry than problems...

Suggestion
- if you just have a bit of emulsion may not be a big problem (look up AOS here and you can see how to diagnose problems with that - Porsche equivalent of PCV) - but change the oil and send a sample for analysis - it is cheap at may tell you a lot about the engine condition.

If you search these boards for terms like intermix, you can read all the horror stories - but don't be too scared - most owners drive and have fun without ever running into these sort of problems.

if you want, pull the oil filter off and dump it (that will remove about 1/2 quart) you can do it twice if you have to...(install, run - repeat)

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just bought my first 996,99 model, have just topped up the oil, level appears perfect and so does dash reading, but ive now noticed a leak of what i think is oil from the front n/s of car, also when topping up i noticed a very small amount of emulsified oil, again is this ok,plus water light came on to-day,topped up with tap water, car is always garaged and dont intend to use it if its really cold, again is this ok? Any help would be much appreciated,Thomas.
step one
never top off the oil
in my 99' I ran 2-3 bars off the BOTTOM!! never near the top...you will create a lot of problems keeping it full!!
start there...
if you want, pull the oil filter off and dump it (that will remove about 1/2 quart) you can do it twice if you have to...(install, run - repeat)
its pretty common that "filling" these cars with oil results in leaking, smoking, poor running and more worry than problems... left alone they will create problems so the best approach is to stay away from being "topped off"
I have been to many a rescue where the diagnosis is "too much oil"
so at least tell us about your new car....

Many thanks,as stated its my first one,its silver with 97000 on it,its the c4 and its amazing, cant get near what it will do,possibly a track day in the future, the car is stone mint and i love it,only thing is i read about engines blowing up and as stated a small amount of emulsified oil is inside the oil filler, hoping this isnt the first signs of a new engine!!
When was oil last changed ? If more than 6 months old and 5K miles I would do that as first service. Oil in the coolant would be much more of a problem. But coolant can also leak into the oil from cracked head etc. - if you just have a bit of emulsion may not be a big problem (look up AOS here and you can see how to diagnose problems with that - Porsche equivalent of PCV) - but change the oil and send a sample for analysis - it is cheap at may tell you a lot about the engine condition.

Welcome ....
Small amounts of Emulsified Mocha are common in the filler cap. It tends to form from shorter trips in cooler weather. Water vapor condenses in the long filler neck and on the "cold" filler cap and mixes with the oil vapor.
It is also alleged that some types/brands of oil are more prone to do this. Do a search, there are almost as many words on oil performance as dollars in the US deficit.
