I had a VW that had dye transfer to the leather (from a belt) and after redying the seat (which was horrible) they replaced the seat cover under warranty.

I have just replaced my seats with GT3 sport seats and when I was removing the original seats I was shocked to see some cracking of the leather on the bolster.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

The leather on the Driver Seat Back bolster (left side) is, for the lack of a better word, peeling. THe attached pic is of the passenger side seat but I have circled the two areas that are affected on the driver's seat. Have any of you had this problem?
I don't have any pics (I know, I know "This thread is useless without pics") of the actual leather problem right now, but I will try to post some in the morning.
Tim, mine are fine, but I have always wondered how durable the leather is.
Reason for my concern is, everytime I get out of the car,
I find myself pushing my body weight up from the seat, with my forearm against that area.
Well, if the same spot is "handled" repeatedly...(sweat or lotion etc on skin left on the leather over time might contribute to something?)
Do you have the same habit when getting out of your car?
Now that you mention it, yes, I believe I do. That could be the issue on the upper part of the bolster, but don't know why the lower part of the bolster would show the same wear. I am not a heavy set guy (6'3" 190 lbs) so it's not like I am swinging a "lard ***" in and out of the car all the time. BTW - My apologies to the "lard asses" out there!
I've seen suntan lotion do that - you transfer it to the leather when you shift your weight to get out of the car.
Even if you're a skinny b@st@rd!
I'll take the lard *** comments personally and say.....

When I had my Jag S-Type, the color layer of the leather on driver's seat bottom started to come off. Jag put new leather on the seat bottom AND the seat back and covered it under the original warranty. My 996 is still under the original warranty. Does anyone know if this is something that the Porsche warranty will cover?
Well, when the leather started peeling on my speaker grill, they covered it. Even though it was probably my foot snagging on the grill which caused the problem.
I have just replaced my seats with GT3 sport seats and when I was removing the original seats I was shocked to see some cracking of the leather on the bolster. Clearly this is wear from getting in and out of the car, but regardless, I was shocked to see this in a car with only 40K on the clock. I had a VW that had dye transfer to the leather (from a belt) and after redying the seat (which was horrible) they replaced the seat cover under warranty. The car was under two years old and had 15K on the clock so I had the advantage of low miles.
I had a 2001 cab. with only 15k miles and it was already showing evidence of leather deterioration on the bolsters. It is defintely caused by getting in and out. I would take it to the dealer and see if the warranty would cover it. A car that cost so much money should not have these issues with such low miles.
Thanks to all who replied. I really do appreciate your help and comments!
I am having the car aligned tomorrow and when I take it in to the dealer, I will have them look at the seat bolster.
Thanks again for your input!
