Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
I was taught if you are nose down it goes in reverse, *** down you use first, and either worked for flat.

Leading evidence: 'Use first, and either worked' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use first, and either worked' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
In past days of 3 & 4 speed boxes reverse was generally the highest numerical gear ratio which offered the lowest mechanical advantage when trying to turn the engine using the wheels.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Or apply the handbrake...
I usually park in neutral with the handbrake partly to save any stress on my tranny if some idiots that don't know how to parallel park starts pushing my car out if the way trying to park.
Now if I had the new Porsches(post VW takeover), I'd probably just leave it in gear than have to deal with the idiotic electronic eBrake system they've implemented off the Audi's.
its a very slight incline, it rolled very slowly. There was no damage to the VW as it only hit the rear tire. I wanted to push it back to its parking spot and put something under the tire until the owner came but THIS IS LA he would have probably sued me saying that I caused it to roll. So it was just left alone.
Outside of my own garage, I always leave mine parked in gear and apply the hand brake. I leave it in gear but do NOT apply the handbrake when I am parked in my own garage. (Not that anyone gives a ****) hahaha.
I do. I park in reverse...habit from driving a Saab 900 as a kid. You couldn't take out the key if you didn't.
I also use the handbrake. Transmissions pop out of gear (ahem).

No matter where I'm parking its always in gear and hand brake on. You never know when either one of them are going to fail. Very small chance that both of them will fail at the same time.
In the Northeast if you grab a handfull of hand brake you come out in the morning and find a frozen brake system and walk to work.... The down side to winter living. Thus, most of time you forget the car even has a parking brake system.
I also always park the car in reverse with the parking brake engaged. That's the way I was taught. I have also owned a Saab, and I believe it was required in that car too. My Saab was a 2004 9-5 Aero.
In past days of 3 & 4 speed boxes reverse was generally the highest numerical gear ratio which offered the lowest mechanical advantage when trying to turn the engine using the wheels. For this reason reverse gear was often considered to the best gear to use to assist the parking brake when parking the car. With development into close ratio gearboxes with 5 or more gears, the numerical ratio of 1st gear was increased to improve acceleration performance. In modern cars (including our 996s) 1st gear, more often than not, has a higher numerical ratio than reverse and as such may be a more appropriate parking assist.
For me it makes no odds, valves are closed on compression and power strokes so you get the same engine braking in either direction. Higher numerical ratio gives you less mechanical advantage when trying to turn the engine.
A lot of driving schools teach this. If you're parked on a decline and pointing down, you want to put it in reverse in case your eBrake fails then the transmission will stop the car from rolling down hill. Same for the opposite situation.
Yeah I figured that but if you're taking precautions and backups to ensure car won't move by putting it in gear in addition to the eBrake, wouldn't you also want to go the extra step in making sure it has the gearing as a backup as well on inclines/declines rather than depending on sole engine braking? Have you ever parked on San Francisco streets? Personally I'd feel more assured that it was in the proper gear in places like that as a backup to a backup.
Park on an incline put your car in first gear, it is unlikely to move. Now put your foot on the clutch and it will roll off down the hill. The majority of the braking you get from putting your car in gear comes from the reluctance of the engine to turn due to compression. The higher the numerical value of the gear ratio the better.
Your 996 has a higher gearing in 1st gear than in reverse. When I was learning to drive the highest gear was generally reverse and as such was prescribed for back up to the parking brake.
I made that mistake once...
The handbrake was set, but not enough. I also thought I'd put it gear, but I guess it wasn't quite all the way engaged.
Adding insult to injury, I had sold the car the night before and the new owner was on his way to pick it up and do the money transfer.
Hmm, I prefer the electric parking brake in my X5 and other non-sports cars, mostly because of the lack of exertion required to activate it. Wife Approval Factor is high with that option, plus in the X5 you can activate the parking brake and turn the engine off and the vehicle places itself in Park.
I like the lack of "drama" in the process--press the button, the car won't move. Schnell, I'm guessing you got the dreaded BMW "Electronic Brake Malfunction" message on yours?
