Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

She sure has! It is interesting to me how diminutive each model seems as the next comes out. Maybe it it is the emphasis on larger and larger wheel diameters. Your car is beautiful, but of course I am biased towards a Savannah Beige interior! Cheers, TomF

Tom - yes I'm riding 18" and the standard these days seem to be 20"!!! I was at the dealer yesterday getting brake fluid changed after my track season ended :-( and there was a 993 there with 16" wheels and it looked so small...

POST 5Original post

I like the 996 better than the 991. 991 is too big

POST 7Original post

The 991 is a big car, but it sure is pretty Does the 991 in the photo have 20" wheels

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10857308

yes. 20"

POST 10Original post

991 looks like a beast. Anyone know the weight difference. ?

POST 11Original post

Hey guys...it would be helpful to label which car is which. It's so hard to tell!

POST 12Original post

I will be the odd one out here, but I really don't like 991. The back of the car is really unattractive to me. Tail lights on 991 just don't do it for me.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 10858416

The 991 is about 400 lbs lighter

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 10857260

That's a gorgeous modern car, I can hardly wait till it's my turn. Although I'm also very very happy and in love with my C4S. Kinda like, being blissfully happy with your woman, but briefly pausing to look at and inwardly drool over a younger hottie

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 10858776

Lighter than what? I guarantee you it is neither lighter than Terry's '99 C2(person who asked the weight question) nor my 2000 C2. Although, it may be lighter than a MKII 996 C4(S), that I am not sure of... The looks of the 991 are really growing on me and the more I see it the more I like its exterior(and interior) styling. However, I bet the driving experience of the 991 is too plush for my tastes as the few 997s I have driven felt too plush and refined for my tastes. To be fair, I have never driven a 991 before so I'm simply basing my 991 driving demeanor on the many reviews I have read about the new model. Damn would I like to upgrade my 996 C2 to the 996 GT3 but unfortunately, I still use my rear seats.

POST 17Original post

Those were generic numbers from Wiki which I should have realised might not have been 100% accurate. Below all manual transmissions. Porsche numbers: 2003 C2 3020 lbs 2014 C2 3040 lbs Edmunds: 2000 C2 2910 lbs 1999 C2 2901 lbs best i can come with.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 10858811

I think part of the confusion about the weight of the 991 stems from the fact that Porsche has advertised that the 991 has been redesigned to be much lighter. But, much lighter than what? In fact, a 991 C2 is 3042 lbs. per the Porsche USA website and the 997.2 C2 is 3285 lbs. So, it's much lighter than it's immediate predecessor but perhaps a bit more than a Mk I 996. I love the picture in my avatar because it really shows how much the car has grown over the years.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 10858960

And a 1965 911 weighed in at about 2,200 pounds.

POST 20Original post

I'm amazed the 991 is that light. Carbon fiber, aluminum, plastic have come a long way.

POST 21Original post

the 991 are all aluminum body now... but I look at it and its effin big. Its the butt, people are on a big booty kick and Porsche is giving them what they want. But honestly, the watercooled cars drive soooo much better that the aircooled is because of its wheel base. The longer wheel base makes these cars daily drivers.

POST 22Original post

Not crazy about the enormous 991. If someone gave me one I'd sell it and buy any older model.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 10858960

Agreed...my question was more rhetorical in nature. It is amazing to me, given the size of the 991, that Porsche was able to keep its weight around the 3,000 lbs mark(at least for the C2 models). I just wish this was the trend for the new high performance car market as a whole.

POST 24Original post

The 991 is what the 911 is to become; It will be the luxury car that is still fast and has a semi useful backseat. I think they also want to tie in the look of their other cars like the Panamera. I believe the Cayman S is to become the more stripped down fast as fawk car. (Although you can still get them very well equipped if you want to.) But if we are just talking about looks. The 1986 turbo and the 997 are my favorites.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 10859895

Perhaps, but I think otherwise. The fact that Porsche has kept the weight down on the 991 Carreras(they are lighter than the preceding 993s and 997s(but not the 996s)) shows their commitment to keeping the 991 at the forefront of their performance car line-up. Also, while they are professionally racing the Cayman, I don't see the Cayman overtaking the 911 GT3 Cups(RSs, etc.) anytime soon as Porsche's premier pro racer. rgl - are you a big Three's Company fan???

POST 26Original post

I think it is ok to like them both, and I wouldn't mind having one, lol. That said, it's hard for me to say that it is 4-5X better than my 03C4S, and I like the rear view 996 C4S the best, regardless of price. Patrick

Only a few people have made that connection. But it has been a nickname since I was a kid. My last name is Beagle (be-AUJ-lee)

I actually had a chance to go to The Regal Beagle restaurant in Chicago before they closed. Yes it was a tribute restaurant to the Three's Company. I use the thigh master for my biceps while I watch Krissy on my VCR.

POST 31Original post

Well I got it cleaned up yesterday and it's SO much nicer...grin....weather's turning rotten here, rumors of snow a-comin' so it's time to get some last driving in. I love my 996 and am very happy with it - no need to trade up and the improvements over my old 83 SC really make it a much more comfortable DD. Having said that, I'd sure love an older 'roller skate' again...that thing was a riot to drive! Happy Sunday everyone!

POST 32Original post

I saw a silver 996 C4S with mesh BBS parked very near a white 991. I stuck around to watch people's reactions as they walked past. The 996 C4S actually got a few people to stop and look it from top to bottom while the 991 got passing glances.

POST 33Original post

Remember when the 996 came out and everyone talked about how fat and bloated it looked?

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 10863346

well compared to the previous 993, I can't say I would disagree. The 996 was the first full step towards turning the Carrera from sports coupe to grand touring coupe. I see this in the flesh every time I visit my indy who always has all manner of 993, 964 and 911 parked right next to 996/997's. It's almost weird to think that these are the same model. People always talk about the heritage of the Carrera as a rationale for buying one of the newer models but frankly the 911 hasn't been that small car for nearly 14 years now. If anything the Cayman's proportions and nimbleness are more in line with that heritage.

POST 35Original post

It's never easy to walk the line between proven heritage and technical innovation. All things considered, the 911 has done a pretty good job over the last 50 years.

POST 36Original post

Quotes source posts: 10863505, 10863543

Agreed. It's just funny because size is relative now that the 996 is the "old" model and we see the size of the new one. I see the same thing with every car out there. I remember when BMW 3 series were small cars. Even something as simple as a Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sentra is no longer a small car. Amazing how we want great fuel economy yet keep adding weight to every new car out there. I know, especially when you have a rabid fanbase that will critique your every move. As a company Porsche really can't win no matter what they do

POST 40Original post

I have an '03 996 narrow body. I remember when I bought it thinking it was wide. A buddy had a 993 C4 that regularly parked next to me and my wife commented on how much smaller that car was... Then I looked at turbos and then 997s and thought my car looked small. Last week a 991 was parked right next to my old 996. The difference in size is amazing. The 991 looked like some huge Aston Martin. It's just a different kind of look. Of course, I've not driven either, but just aesthetics. Color me an interested party, but I really think all the 996s that have been well-maintained and looked after, mechanically upgraded where appropriate, and relatively unmolested cosmetically, will be sought after. (914s took a dive and then bumped back up... Albeit, for different reasons). JKC
