Leading evidence: 'result of the %$&%*($&%(*$& car wash' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'result of the %$&%*($&%(*$& car wash' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check alignment and have a couple of words' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Last I checked the only pressure printed on tires is the maximum inflation pressure.

I just replaced my rear Bridgestone SO2s after a little over 10K miles

I run 35/40 and of course it always depends on how you drive, how fast, your load, ambient temp and alignment set up.

I run over 2* in the rear but the tire wears pretty evenly across the tread since I use it for autocross so much, which really stresses the outsides of the tires, and I run essentially zero toe.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Unbelievable. I have an '02 C4 Cab that I use as a daily driver. Back in April, 6 months ago, I purchased a brand new set of Hankook Ventus V12 and after 5,000 miles, they are balding, no kidding!
They have lost so much tread that after a few minutes of driving you can smell the rubber burning. I don't track the car and while I do drive sprited from time to time, for the most part I baby my baby.
The winter set is going on this week but I am fuming over the horrid tread life of the Hankook Ventus V12.
I just wanted to share as my experience can't be the only one as many have had good things to say about this tire.
Time for an alignment? Go with less negative camber in the rear. My rear sumis are cooked also around 5000 miles. Not unusual if you have an aggressive setup.
I have about 9K on Bridgestone Potena RE760's and they are wearing great. Very even and I can prob get 18K-20K out of them at this rate

Even with RWD, 5K of normal driving is pretty short
Def. an alignment issue. And as mentioned in another thread on rapid wear, improper toe angle causes major wear. A reputable shop that does P-cars on a regular basis should be able to solve your problem. IF the alignment numbers are within OEM parameters, then consider taking it up with the dealer that sold you the Hankooks for possible replacement.
A friend of mine with an 01 Cab purchases his PS2's from Costco, they wear out too quick (whatever the claimed miles are) and Costco replaces them for about half price with new ones. Costco has great service with whatever they sell.
I have Hankook V12 Venti with almost 20k miles on the fronts and 10k on the rears. I was shocked how well they hold up. FYI...any rear 996 tire will smell "cooked" due to the proximity to the exhaust. Totally normal.
Sounds like an alignment issue to me too.
That being said, rear tires don't last very long on a 996 even with proper alignment. I typically expect 10,000 miles on rears and 20,000 on fronts. Sometimes I don't get that many miles out of a set.
Get your alignment done by a dealer or a good independent Porsche mechanic. Don't have it done by a national chain tire store.
I had the car aligned when I had the tires put on but I hear what everyone is saying. I'm bringing it back to the tire shop this weekend to put the snows on and I'll check the alignment and have a couple of words for the shop as well. The alignment shouldn't have gone that out of whack that quickly unless they screwed up the alignment. I'll also make it a point to throw up some pic's once the tires are off. Thanks for the advice and for listening to me vent.
It's always amazing when you take your summer tires off to put on your snows, and you see the inner edge of the rear tires. They look like they have plenty of tread left while they are mounted on the car, but once you get a close inspection you see the truth...
Another thing that will prematurely wear out the inside, is if you inflating it to what the sidewall says. I think the Hankook says 42 or 44, when that's just to high for the 911 spec. You wind up riding on the inside 2" unless the suspension is under nearly full compression. I burned up a set of 19" hankooks in about 6k mi, was an expensive lesson.
Last I checked the only pressure printed on tires is the maximum inflation pressure. You shouldn't be using that as any sort of guide for actual operating pressure.
I just replaced my rear Bridgestone SO2s after a little over 10K miles
. I had it realigned after installing the new rubber and everything is just fine
okay, so here's the answer. The rear alignment was off by 3/4 of an inch, which is massive. The front was fine. After close inspection of the rims, the tale was easily told. It was the result of the %$&%*($&%(*$& car wash.
I use Splash in Fairfield County, CT to get my car washed because it is one of the higher end car washes around. It turns out that when the machine is bringing the rear wheels into the track, due to their width, they were getting forced into the track, which is what through the alignment off. You can actually see the gouges in the inside of the rim on the rear tires. So frustrating to burn thru two brand new tires in less than 6 months.
Lesson Learned - Hand Car Washes from hear on out!
For the rest of you out there - don't skimp on the alignment - being out of alignment, even for a short period can be very costly

I run 35/40 and of course it always depends on how you drive, how fast, your load, ambient temp and alignment set up. Porsche recommend 36/44 but I find this too much for my usage. I've got 20K on my rear Conti's and they look fine. Need new fronts next year as they look like their shaved now... Got 18K on them and two track days.
I, too, have Hankook Ventus V12 tires. Now with about 12K miles, they show only nominal wear. They are 17" and Porsche recommended air pressure is 36 psi front and rear.
FYI-I had a front and rear alignment completed by the P-car dealer after fitting the Hankooks.

I get easy 15k on my Ventus V12 rears and twice that on the fronts and that is with what they call "spirited' driving.
I generally will about 6k or 7k and then have tire shop rotate the rears and leave the fronts as is till the end and on my 3rd set of rears.
Glad you got an answer on why your tires went out so fast. I know a lot of people take the camber out of the rear, but it's the toe that will really wipe out your tires fast. I run over 2* in the rear but the tire wears pretty evenly across the tread since I use it for autocross so much, which really stresses the outsides of the tires, and I run essentially zero toe.
There is a cheap hand wash place off Exit 16 on I95. Go towards East Norwalk Train station on the corner of East Ave and Fort Point Rd. It is behind the Shell Station on Fort Point Road. $25 and 30 minutes of your time.
My local "Splash" in Greenwich charges $60 for a hand wash.
