On start up it ran like crap but I drove until it got to a good operating temperature then drove like an a-hole.

If you knew someone who had a durametric and was good at using the data logging features it has, you could monitor things like rough running parameters and whatnot to try and figure it out.

Might wanna specify what oil you use for the peeps trying to make some correlation on the oil pressure as different oils will exhibit different oil pressure characteristics.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After nearly 6,000 miles of trouble-free ownership I may have encountered my first hiccup. Here goes.....while approaching a stop at a light I notice the car running a little rough. The idle is erratic fluctuating slightly above and below 1,000 RPM and the oil pressure gauge drops to the "2" mark (when driving it hovers slightly above "4"). I accelerate slowly and the pressures go back to 4 and it runs fine but I'm driving conservatively not knowing what may happen next. I have second thoughts but I make a stop on the way home. 10+ minutes later I attempt to start the car (computer oil level reads nearly full for what that is worth). Turns over and immediately stalls......I wait a few seconds, cross my fingers and I restart but with the same erratic idle. Home is five miles away and I decide to limp it home but again it runs fine with no hesitation unless driving slowly or at a stop. While driving the oil pressure reads around "4" until I slow or stop. Oil pressure reads approximately 2 as I bring it into the garage with the erratic idle. Park it, look under the car and don't notice anything unusual. I just checked again after being home for around 20 minutes and nothing on the floor (I'm looking for a puddle of oil). I rarely use the radio and I didn't hear anything unusual while driving although there was a little "clunk" when I shut the car off when I stopped for my errand on the way home. No horrible sounds otherwise. Car facts.....good history and always dealer maintained from the previous owner (I'm #2). I did an annual service at 19,437 miles soon after acquiring. It currently has 24,100 miles and the car is 100% original. The annual service revealed a little sweating at the RMS but they suggested keeping an eye on it (I am also servicing at a franchised retailer). The car has been flawless since owning it from March of this year. On the way home before the symptoms, I filled up the tank since it was half full and there were no issues at that time. So........what could this be?

POST 2Original post

I don't know what to comment about the erratic idle, but the oil pressure readings, both at idle and at higher RPMs, seem pretty normal numbers for warm oil. At least that's what I am seeing on my '01 with 53K miles.

POST 3Original post

59,000 on my '04 C2 with 3,000 miles since last oil change (5w40) and I never have lower oil pressure readings below the 3 mark, usually at just below 4.

POST 4Original post

Did you use the correct grade of gas for the engine? How is your air filter?

POST 6Original post

Recently had a tank of Premium 93 that was apparently bad gas. Experienced the same crappy symptoms. Ran that tank out and re-filled at different station - problems went away. Try a fresh tank of fuel and maybe run some Techron through with that tank. Maybe with the "winter" fuel mix changeover you just got a tank of bad gas. Your oil pressure observations look normal.

POST 8Original post

Might wanna specify what oil you use for the peeps trying to make some correlation on the oil pressure as different oils will exhibit different oil pressure characteristics.

POST 9Original post

++1 on bad gas. My car is very sensitive to what goes in it...much like its owner!

POST 10Original post

Yeah despite some fuel stabilizer, I had the same symptoms plus a CEL when I returned from deployment and the car had the same gas in it all that time. The oil pressure seems normal enough although I only get below 2 when the car is really up to temp. I've never drained the tank before though so I don't know how tough that would be. Could also be a coil pack I guess. If you knew someone who had a durametric and was good at using the data logging features it has, you could monitor things like rough running parameters and whatnot to try and figure it out.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all. I should have mentioned no CEL, no oil pressure warning light and 0w50 (I know, I know.......) I'll throw some Techron at it and see what happens and hopefully it's just a case of bad gas. Good to hear from fellow owners the oil pressures seem to be in line. Thanks again.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

*Update*.......I put two ounces of Startron in (all I have in the arsenal currently) and just took the car out for about 6 miles. On start up it ran like crap but I drove until it got to a good operating temperature then drove like an a-hole. The first stop had a hint of rough running and by the time I got back to the garage it was running much better. Whew..... Thanks again everyone.
