Suggestion · Original poster

However, due to Xenon lights operating at a cooler temperature than halogen bulbs, I would imagine that only running with the high beam on for an extended period of time would heat the assembly up enough to cause an Led to fail.

Assuming you're talking about the 5 watt halogen european DRL bulbs I used Luxeon 3 watt leds, fabricated the heatsink/holder myself, to replace mine.

I also used a plastic "collimator" lens over the LED to focus most of the LED light output into a tight/narrow forward beam.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Like many of you, the parking lights in both of my litronic assemblies died, within a week's time of each other. After only searching on other Porsche boards, I was about ready to pay $30 to ship some Phillips Bluevision bulbs over here from England. Luckily I searched here as well and came upon the LED suggestion. The picture in this thread looks amazing: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...&highlight=h6w . I would very much like to duplicate those results. To do so, should I get the white or blue LEDs at http://store.42draftdesigns.com/BAX9S-LED_p_8-33.html? Additionally, would does everyone think about these: http://store.42draftdesigns.com/High...D_p_8-40.html? Too ricey for a Porsche? Finally, I would like to know how the LEDs are holding up for those that have made the switch. They aren't burning out are they?

POST 2Original post

Assuming you're talking about the 5 watt halogen european DRL bulbs I used Luxeon 3 watt leds, fabricated the heatsink/holder myself, to replace mine. V-leds, Velocity Leds on ebay has some pretty good choices. Absent getting the heat wicked away, a really GOOD heatsink, the LED life will not be all that stellar. http://stores.ebay.com/V-LEDS_H3-H11...QQfsubZ7483689

POST 3Original post

I have used the LEDs for about a year. They are working fine and produce very white light that matches up with the litronic lights color.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

TCR, are you employing any sort of heatsink like wwest suggested? Additionally, to both of you, how is the actual light output compared to the old halogen DRL bulbs? Thanks, this sure beats 30 bucks Bluevision bulbs from England.

POST 5Original post

The LED produces no heat to speak of, so no need for a heatsink

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That is my understanding. From what I have read, the problem with heat is that sometimes the Leds fail due to the heat generated by other lights in the assembly. However, due to Xenon lights operating at a cooler temperature than halogen bulbs, I would imagine that only running with the high beam on for an extended period of time would heat the assembly up enough to cause an Led to fail. I am certainly no engineer though.

You're probably speaking of a small milliwatt LED, the 1 watt LEDs upwards of 50 lumens need a serious level of heat-sinking if you expect them to last. And yes, also, since there is no easily interchange, flow, of the air within the bulb area of the headlamps it makes it unusually difficult to wick the heat away. More info about heat sinking at lumileds.com. I bored out the "sleeve" that held the h6w and mounted the LED on an short aluminum rod and then mounted a heat sink on the "outside" end of the rod. 9 ohm 10 watt resistor to limit the LED current flow to ~1 Amp. Dropped the LED/Rod assembly through the larger bulb opening and then threaded it backwards through the enlarged h6w "sleeve" opening. I also used a plastic "collimator" lens over the LED to focus most of the LED light output into a tight/narrow forward beam.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Man, that sounds like a bit of work. I think you have convinced me to get the "regular" led as opposed to the higher output model since it sounds like the higher output would generate even more heat than the standard pax9s application would.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just came across this thread and thought that I would update it. I got the high output versions. To my surprise they came with a heatsink built into them. They have lasted half of a year so far and look amazing. Highly recommended.
