I was quoted $4,000 to replace the clutch, flywheel, and possible RMS.

In addition, when replacing the clutch, what else should I replace since the motor is out of the car?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think the clutch in my 1999 C-2 is going out. I just hit 37k miles (purchased the car with 29k in Oct 2007) and the clutch is starting to feel a little weird. I had a 30k service done at Callas Rennsport here in Southern Cal... The service that I received was good and Tony is both a wealth of knowledge and a friendly guy. My issue is that I cant afford to pay his prices (which are higher than local P-Car dealerships). I was quoted $4,000 to replace the clutch, flywheel, and possible RMS.
Can you guys let me know what a fair price would be and recommend someone here in Southern California (LA area). In addition, when replacing the clutch, what else should I replace since the motor is out of the car? I love to drive my car but Im not the mechanically inclined type who knows all of the internals (pressure plate, flywheel, etc) and what they do. Thanks in advance.
Parts: a new clutch disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing will run about $500. IF you need a new flywheel there's another $1,000.
Definately do the RMS while you are in there.

Why does the flywheel need to be replaced? Just thinking "common sense", that kind of part seems like it should last practically forever. Isn't just a hunk of metal that spins? Pardon my ignorance!!!
IMO, you get what you pay for with Callas. I pay Tony because I know he is upfront and honest, I know they will do it right the first time, and he is committed to excellence, oh, and he will answer my stupid questions. BTW, Downtown LA Porsche quoted $1550 plus parts for an oil separator on a tip and Callas finished the work for about $1300 including parts.
I am sure there are mechanics who are less, but after seeing first hand what another mechanic can do, I am sticking with Callas.
Why would they have to take the motor out to replace the clutch? My friend and I replaced the clutch on his 2004 996 a few weeks ago by just removing the transmission. The hardest part was aligning and reinstalling the transmission, which took about an hour of manipulation before it slid in. We are going to do my 99 996 this Saturday. Parts were under $500. His did not require replacement of the rms and I am hoping mine doesn’t either, but I ordered one just in case.
you don't replace the flywheel. it's a duel mass so you don't resurface it either. i usually use sand paper and wd-40 to clean it off if necessary, and then wipe it down with brake cleaner. i would do it for you myself in a month. i'm opening a shop soon. have the location, still head hunting for a good tech.
