Thanks Robert - After disconnecting the battaery for an hour the emissions warning light has gone out - I took the car for run round the country lanes and no light came on again.

I have reset it before by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, but when I tried this tonight, the alarm went off??

If you've got no check engine light, there is no reason to replace the sensor at this point in time.

While at the dealer doing my 45k service, the dealer told me that I needed a new oxygen sensor. (My car had trouble turning over one time last week...the first and only time since new). The dealer quoted $425 for the sensor installed but didn't have one in stock. Before I bring the car back in next week, I thought I would get some feedback....anyone have same problems? $400 seems high....
If you don't have a check engine light or on going problems, I would pass. New bosch sensor costS $130 and you can put in in youself in 10 minutes. Ask the dealer why you need a new one and ask to see the scope showing that one is lazy.
I know many mechanics and can tell you the dealers like to upcharge you. If there is no check engine light then you don't need it. The dealer likes to recomend changing them as preventive maintance. An O2 builds up carbon and deposits over time and milage and can make their signals back to the computer not work as well. An old O2 can reduce performance and milage, but it is not the case to replace them at a certain milage. Yes the O2 are easy to change and the parts are about $130 each, I thinkthe 996 has two. I would wait, but if you want to do it its your money.

My engine check light has just come on!! Is it disastrous to drvie for a day or two (miles) before going into the garage?

Mine has come on a couple times in the last 6 months. The dealer said its fine to drive it and both times it has gone off. If it blinks then you better shut her down!
