I think it does since Porsche specifically tested these tires on this car which is rear engined unlike most cars (majority of weight over the back wheels as opposed to the front).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Guys / Gals,
I just recently fulfilled my dreams of purchasing a 911. 2001 911 Carrera with 18K miles. Great car. My second porsche, but first 911. I'm looking at replacing my Michelin Pilot Sports with new tires. My question, is that extra money worth keeping with the same tire, or is there a more economical performance based tire out there? I'm looking for feel, control and low road noise, if that helps.
Thanks.
Kelly
I just went through this decision a week ago. There are a couple of more economical choices if you're willing to sacrfice on any of those three fronts. If you can give up road noise the BFG KDW's will give you similar performance to the Micheline PS2. After some hemming and hawing I pulled the trigger on the Michelins. They're the best of all worlds.
I have ~1800 miles on a set of Sumitomo HTR Z III driven in a variety of wet and dry conditions and have been very pleased in all areas. It's hard to imagine the words performance and economical being used to describe a tire, but I would in this case.
That is a loaded question. It all depends on how you use your car. The best advice is to a search here and read all of the various opinions. Try and find posts by people who use the car like you will and see what they say. There is not right or wrong answer as long as you stay within the basic list of choices.
The first question is whether you will stay only with "n" rated tires. Most here would probably recommend that. The next question is whether to stay with dedicated summer tires with another set of dedicated winter tires or go with all season's - and this depends on where you live and whether you will drive in the winter.
Basically you will find there are probably enough posts here on tires to fill a book. Just read through them and eventually you will form an idea of what tire best suits you.
As for me, I am partial to Bridgestones, but then I have only had either Pirellis (which I think are noisy) or the Bridgestones which I think are quieter. But I bet there is someone out there that thinks just the opposite.
I'm pretty pleased with the Bridgestone S02 A's. They wear very evenly and hold up quite well even with 3-4 track days per year thrown in. When the back tires get close to the wear bars, they will get noticeably noisier.
Good post! Doug, I was just looking at the HTR Z III. I think I'm going to try them next time!
To the OP. Glad to have you here! Can we see some Pics of the car? Options?
I have Falken Fk-452's....I think they were under 700 bucks delivered, and I have wider rears than you. I love them, no major difference than the S 02's, and half the price.
try for them at

I'm with Phil on the So2A's. Also the Conti Sport Contact are a good "middle of the road" tire too. If you want the best performance get the Michelin's. However, be prepared to pay a premium for them. If you want really good perfromance, relatively low noise, and good wear then either the Bridgestone's or Conti's. And both are "n" rated which I would recommend. Many people go outside the "n" rating and say it doesn't make a difference. I think it does since Porsche specifically tested these tires on this car which is rear engined unlike most cars (majority of weight over the back wheels as opposed to the front).
What's wrong with the HTR Z II's? Besides being the old tire..I mean. I have them on mine (came with the car and only have about 6k miles on them)...I'm not crazy about them, noisy, a little greasy feeling, and would not put them on again, but if there is something else about them, I'd like to know too!.
I had Pirelli P-zeros on my car before (came with the car). Unfortunately (or fortunately), they were sold out across the country a few months ago (at least in the size I needed--295/19). I went with the new Bridgestone RE50As. No problems, they seem to be about the same in terms of grip and noise (plus I saved about $100 per tire). As others have mentioned, the Toyo T1Rs are also good. I had S02s on my M3 that I liked as well.
If you're sticking to the street, any of these would work well. I'd go with the most economical of the "name brands", I don't think I'd cheap out on tires, IMO of course.
I am pretty sure they aren't the old tire, the are just in a lower performance class. At $600 per set you get what you paid for. For casual street driving they are fine. Any spirited driving or Autocross they under perform. I wouldn't even try the II's at a DE.
I went with Bridgestone Pole Position RE050A's. Nice, quiet, top-rated summer tire. Check the Tirerack.com survey pages.
And welcome to Rennlist!
Tim...hit it!?
Thanks for all the replies. I'm not sure what I'll do, but you all have given me a great list to research. I did price the pilot sports and looked at the goodyear F1s (which I eliminated shortly thereafter). I think
Thanks for the welcome. I'll try to post up some pics the next sunny day we have.
FWIW here's an old tire test by Car and Driver. A lot of the tested tires are still available.

I used to have the P-Zero Rossos and even before I read the article I sensed they were kind of mediocre. After I trashed them last year (autoX
) I got the Yokohama Advan Neovas and I must say I like those tires a lot. Very confidently grippy in the dry at DE speeds.

I have Sumitomo HTR Z III on my 2001 C4 and have about 1,000 miles on them. I really like them. I have only driven them in wet conditions once but I am very pleased. I would buy them again.a
