Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

putting $1500-$3k into a "repair" fund is doable for most.

That's exactly my position - I can eat a $2k-3k repair bill, but not $15k.

He thought he could provide one and came up with one from Dura Lube that limits liability on engine claims to $3000 - obviously not enough to replace an engine.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm in the process of making a deal on a '99 C2 with 71k miles and told the dealer (BMW) that I couldn't buy the car without an aftermarket warranty. He thought he could provide one and came up with one from Dura Lube that limits liability on engine claims to $3000 - obviously not enough to replace an engine. My quick search online yields no company willing to provide warranty on an "old" P-car. Anyone bought a '99 lately and got warranty - any suggestions?
i saw this on the web:
http://www.route66warranty.com/asp/index.asp
anyone know what their coverage is like? they claim my 01 c4 with 61k miles qualifies. they check out fine on the BBB website and is a member.
^ I completed the info for a quote from Route 66 and I'll see what kind of response I get. The broker I spoke to who handled the Dura Lube warranty, as well as many others, told me I would have difficulty finding a reputable company to provide a comprehensive warranty on a car as old as a '99. I can handle a few thousand $ for repairs, but not $15000 for an engine - am I too cautious with these cars?
Oh boy, here we go!
Do a search on extended warranty and read for a couple hours (days). You'll get all the opinions you can handle long before you finish reading responses.
Yeah - on second thought, disregard my last question - I've read the opionions re warranties on this and many other forums and know the drill. It was an offhand comment not meant to get the debate going again. Sorry
Like any used car, it's a gamble, one I took. I have a '99 w/82,000 miles on it, of which I've put the last 23,000. No problems.
Remember, no one starts a thread telling you their engine didn't break, so the only threads you see are bad.
Look at the recent thread of how much people spent on their 996's in the last 3 years. May make you feel better.
I don't know about OKC but in Cali you can't get an extended warranty from a non-porsche dealer. To buy it on your own is 3-4K, and even that is limited (assuming that they pay). IMHO spend a few hundred dollars on a good inspection, and put the rest in the bank for a rainy day.
to me, an aftermarket is really good for IMS or other engine destroying failures. $12-$15k is a lot to pay out at once.
putting $1500-$3k into a "repair" fund is doable for most. but $15k? that would be pretty raw for most people.
That's exactly my position - I can eat a $2k-3k repair bill, but not $15k. I also don't have the luxury of the P-car being a second car - it would be a DD. Maybe the '99 isn't meant for me and I should revert to my original plan of waiting a year or so and shooting for the MY02 with aftermarket warranty.
