So my father ran over one of the giant metal plates that are loosely attached to 23rd Street in his Mercedes the other day, it made an inordinately large sound, and to make a long story short the transmission is now in limp home mode and there's a CEL on the dash.

I've been told to buy a Snap-On Mt 2500, but from what I can tell that's going to run me ~500-1000 for everything I need for all of our cars, which I think is probably overkill unless I was opening an auto parts business.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So my father ran over one of the giant metal plates that are loosely attached to 23rd Street in his Mercedes the other day, it made an inordinately large sound, and to make a long story short the transmission is now in limp home mode and there's a CEL on the dash. Being out of warranty, I'm itching to pull the codes, so it got me thinking. In my immediate family we have a few MB, Audi and my P, all post-2000 model years so all OBD-II, and I thought hey I should probably buy a scanner. I really want something that I can use with MB as well as Porsche and if possible Audi as well. I'd also like to be able to read all the codes if I'm going to buy a device (not just engine codes but detailed auto trans codes, sensor readings, etc) It would be very nice to have the ability to pull real time fuel/air O2 MAF readings, but not necessary. I've been told to buy a Snap-On Mt 2500, but from what I can tell that's going to run me ~500-1000 for everything I need for all of our cars, which I think is probably overkill unless I was opening an auto parts business. I was thinking ~200 bucks Does anyone here know whether or not there is a multi make scanning solution that will work with modern MB, Porsche, Audi, without requiring me to buy multiple different software licenses? Or if there is a very good site or knowledgeable resource on this topic I could review or ask? I was imagining there must be a solution where I buy a standard cable, with adapters for the MB Tool port (38 pin), MB OBD2, Porsche OBD2 / Audi OBD2 etc., and have a piece of software that runs on my computer. I have Mac and PC Laptops and would even dedicate an old laptop to something dedicated if necessary, but if there's a more dedicated, computer-less solution I'm all for it
