Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It is in the latest Excellence Mag. All I have to say is WOW!! Very cool. Not really crazy about the wheels. But I knew the some tuners would start looking seriously at these cars. Porsche has historically always somewhat "detuned" new motors. The 3.4 has some great opportunities to get more power.
Supposedly, they placed new camshafts, exhaust, reprogrammed the ECU, and shaved the heads to allow for a 11.5:1 compression ratio!
Accorning to 9ff the result is a 0-62mph time of 4.7 sec. And a new top speed of 185mph.
With prices coming down on the '99-'00's, c'mon tuners! Let's get some more of you doing this sort of thing! I can't wait to start modding.
Chad
stateside, 9ff does not have a good history with serivce. search 996 turbo threads for some of the nightmare stories. the wheels on the car in the pic are hyper-expensive ATS center lock wheels straight off dtm race cars. check out the rotors, they're re-branded 15" brembos. you're talking $15k in brakes and wheels/ties--this before touching the engine, bodywork interior and suspension. the car pictured is easily $100k. you're now talking gt3 teritory in price, and the 9ff is still no gt3.
That is a great car and a great article. I love that the tuners are looking toward the 3.4L.
With that said however, with TT prices where they are right now, the price of these mods close the gap too quickly for me to jump on board.
Easy 4 seconds without breaking the wheels. Also 0 -100 mph in 9 seconds also without breaking the wheels free. Street tires. No internal changes to the engine either. Return to stock in 2 hours if I want.
Installed the EVO supercharger more than 10,000 miles ago. I have modified the product to a slight degree and have absolutley no problems with it. Currently producing more than 16.3 :1 effective compression ratio, The car screams. All on 93 octane fuel.
IMO, supercharging and turbo charging is the easy way out. I personally like the n/a aspect of this car. I thought it was very well done. A couple things are over the top, but all-in-all quite well done.

A supercharged and Turbo charged car are completely different to drive. The Supercharged car has no lag and drives EXACTLY like a stock car unless you get on it. ar is more nimble. No cool down required either. No tampering with the already super strong 3.4 liter engine. Able to change the amount of power you want with a simple change of pully. The car is faster to 100 mph than an equally equipted Turbo.
I would buy another 996 and supercharge it before I would buy the Turbo. But, it's all a ersonal preference. But, no stock Porsche TT will get to 100 faster than by little old SC 996.
The 911SC in my avatar picture was supercharged with really old paxton technology. There were other mods to the engine, but time to 100 was pretty close to 1999s 996. It only had an 85MPH speedometer though, so it was hard to quantify for passengers. Most of them couldn't raise their heads to look anyway until I was into 3rd gear
A supercharged car feels very simlar to that of a n/a car. The torque curve is practically the same. The turbo needs that spool up time. I have owned 2 turbo'ed Porsches and now 2 n/a. After feeling the power band from my last n/a car I don't think I will ever go back. The simplicity of working on a n/a car is soooo much better.

The pull is alot more even. Steady power to redline. I have modified the resonace valve operation to increase lower end torque and smooth out the power curve. The standard installation gave you a big kick at about 4500 rpm, but at a cost of lower end torque. I have corrected that.
Couple of Qs for ya:
What do you mean by "simple change of pully"?. I picture some sort of lever tucked under the dash or soemthing.
In the UK it's extreemely expensive to get an SC fitted. Order of 5000 for an EVO at Ninemeister. That's about $10,000. Does that compare with US prices.
I have often thought of buying one in the US and bringing it back to the UK to have it fitted. But is that really feasible? I mean sureley there's a fair ammount of tweaking to do to get it right and I guess the fitter would have to know what he is doing.
What extra burden does an SC have on the engine? Is it like a sh*t more pressure that takes it to the max. I guess I don't understand how they work. I just know you can't extract blood out of a stone.
Saying that I read a bunch of Rennlisters have an SC and are very happy with it so far.
TIA.
You can buy the blower and all components from EVOM.com for about $10,000. It includes new fuel injectors, reprogramming of computer, etc. The pulley I spoke of is the pulley that drives the blower. The smaller the pulley, the more RPM's the blower turns and the more boost that is produced.
As far as the extra strain on the engine...I don't give it a second's thought. My current setup produces and effective compression ratio of about 16.3:1. (6.5 lbs of boost on top of a static compression ratio of 11.3:1). Remember, this is the MAXIMUM pressure put on the engine at redline. Any speed less than that has a reduced level of pressure. With a SC, you can cruise at 130 mph without introducing any boost to the engine. (like a stick engine) Although the boost is being created at that spped, it is not entering the engine because there is a vacuum in the engine while cruising. The boost is only introduced to the engine upon quick throttle demands or WOT when vacuum is removed from the system. Otherwise, the boost simply circulates outside the engine.
I may increase my boost to 8 psi and am not worried as to the increase pressure on the engine. Contact Todd at EVOM.COM and he'll set you up.
Wow at the current dollar rate that's half the price here!
Realistically, how easy are they to fit? I mean is this a DIY project for someone who has only ever taken a straight 4 apart before? Also any gotcha's or things that could go wrong?
It's not a simple install, but you could do it. A shop here would charge about $1500 to do the install. The most difficult is the 3rd radiator and tubing which requires the front bumper to come off. The new injectors can be a pain to get to, but are doable. There might be a dealer near you that has installed the blower before. Contact Todd and see if he knows of someone close by.
Todd provides everything you need for the install...including clamps, tie wraps, hosing, etc. I think the only thing that is not included is the antifreeze that goes into the new radiator.
Yeah I know but only if I could fit it all into luggage. The cost of import duty/VAT/landing fees/shipping and g-d knows what else it would mount up. If al the items combined are fairly small and fairly light I mau seriously consider it. I will be in SF end of Jan.
It had a full cosmetic update. I am not sure about the nose though. I think I would have to see it in person to judge the 9ff style bumper.
Andial, hmmmm....I wonder waht the cost might be.
