POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I was driving home the other night. This M3 and I starting to mess around. We were going around 100. The road then turned into 1 lane due to construction. I let him go 1st. So a taped the break to slow a tad. Then I went into the turn. The turn is about a 30 degree right turn and the road drops in elevation a tad. To the left of me there are cement dividers and large orange barrels next to them. To the right of me there are more of those orange barrels and then the dessert. As I go into the turn the back end start to slide out. At that point I realized I was going for a ride. So I corrected and most likely over correct because the car snapped back around the other way, then snapped again the opposite way and I regained control at about 30mph. I managed to keep the car out of the wall but I did SMACK a few barrels. I caught up to the m3 at the light. He praised me on a great recovery. I certainly didn't think it was that great. So I got to my house and inspected the car. There are two small dents in the driver side door. A Nice scratch on the bumper and the hood had a few little ripples. Also, the passenger rear tire has some negative camber. GREAT!!!! Needless to say I was PISSED.. So I took the car over to Carls place. They seem to be doing a great job so far. I figured why they were doing some suspension work I mine as well lower the car to. The dents on the door should pop out easy. The rest of the work will most likely consist of some paint and allot of buffing. After everything is said and done I imagine its going to be a $4000.00 oops. So I will use this experience as a lesson and take a day off soon and go get some track time in. I need to learn the car a bit better. Ryan

POST 2Original post

Track time will definately help with the drivers skills, but going that fast in a construction zone is probably not a great idea.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yea I already found that out. I already have lost of track time, just not in a porsche.

POST 4Original post

911 is a different beast. You need track time in your 996. The rear end stepping out is very typical in a 911 or any rear-engine car. My suspicion is that you tapped the brake while turning and caused the rear end to lighten and thus get loose. You can actually use that rotation caused by trail-braking to corner faster once you know what you are doing. Not ******* you in any way, just do not want to see you or your 996 hurt. Take Care, Pat

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well my previous tract car is a mr2 turbo. Its just been a while. I think what I did is I tapped the break before the turn and the eased off the gas. Once your committed to a speed its called your committed. But thanks for the input Ryan

POST 6Original post

HOLY CRAP RYAN!!!!! That sucks. I would ask you where the construction zone was that you were in but then again this entire FRICKIN town is one big construction zone. By the way, NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER lift in a corner. You'd be amazed by the car's abilities if you take it to the track where there are no barrels I'll be instructing at the May event if you are out look for me.

POST 7Original post

Naughty boy. Fines are bad in construction zones. Glad you made it. My humble opinion, but having come from an MR2 Turbo myself, that is one tail happy car. I tried to love that car, but... The 996 is a gem compared to that car (stock at least). As you probably know by now: fast in, tow truck out. It doesn't sound like you had PSM? Ditto on the track time.

POST 8Original post

Ooops, missed the $4000 part. Ouch as you say. Like LVDell says, it took awhile to NEVER lift, but it took a lot longer to NEVER NEVER NEVER lift :-). Lifting on an MR2 MKII was a guaranteed snap spin as I recall. It was so bad, they had to change the rear suspension 2 yrs later.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

LVDELL, Yea this town is one big construction zone. LOL and the funny thing is they don't just rip the road up one time and do everything they need to. They rip the same road up over the course of a year 10 times doing just one thing each time. HARD EARNED TAX DOLLARS WORKING FOR US AGAIN. Shoot me a call a day or two before the event. I'll go out there with ya. dnitake Yea I to feel the same way about the mr2. There's no comparison there. Plus the Porsche doesnt break down every other month.

POST 10Original post

No there is an argument for PSM!! Did your car have it? Never lifting off the throttle in a corner is a good recommendation with any 911 due to the rear engine configuration, but the newer 991, particularly the 996's are not nearly as bad. I had a 1967 911 in the early 70's and in these circumstances you would have been totally backward before you knew it.

POST 11Original post

Ahhh, don't do a hundred in a work zone..... (tapped the brakes to slow down a tad does not cut it) Sorry I do not feel sorry for you. Someone could have been seriously hurt......

POST 12Original post

DITTO! he sounds like a moron. no matter how much you know the car, even with track time... he is a moron.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Listen, you two boy scouts. IT WAS freaking 2:00 AM. The M3 and I were the only ones on the road. I was not asking anyone to feel sorry for me. I simply just shared a story with all my good friendly friends on the board but maybe I won't make that mistake again.

POST 14Original post

Not a lesson to learn the car a bit better, rather a lesson that you shouldn't drive like that on public roads. 29 posts and already good friendly friends with a bunch of Rennlisters?!

POST 15Original post

was your car lowered?? When I just got mine..and it wasn't lowered..I didn't like the handling at all...now that it is lowered it feels much better at high speeds....when I take a corner I anticipate the rear drift...love the feel...but I always make sure there is enough room around me for error...because 4K is a big ooops (could have bought you a lot of mods!) I feel a little embarrashed that the M3 didn't fly completely of the road!!

POST 16Original post

Hey Ryan, Those 2 guys aren't boy scouts. You set yourselp up for a beating and you got off light w/ only 2 guys taking the call. You got off light twice now. Now get your butt to the track to get those ya ya's worked out :-). Speaking of which, if this rain ever stops, I must do the same...

POST 17Original post

John D needs to hire a staff psychologist for thin-skinned guys like Ryan to help them get over their self-esteem issues. You can't post a story like that and not expect some kind of a lecture.

POST 18Original post

Lighten up. What kind of reaction did you expect? Personally I am surprised that there weren't more lectures. I would hope my good friends would tell me I am an idiot for driving in that manner during any time on public roads. For all you know the guy in the M3 was driving under the influence and could have collected you both in a nasty accident in the construction zone. Just because you have a car that is capable of the speeds does not mean you should be allowed to drive it that way on public roads. You very well may have hours of track time and the proper skills to drive your car this way but there are countless other mornons on this board who have no business doing this and post like this only encourage them to participate. Lets face it you don't know what type of conditions may exist in a construction zone (loose pavement, uneven surfaces, etc.) and thus the reasons that construction zones have reduced speeds. I understand your need to vent frustrations even from stupid personal mistakes but you should be prepared to suffer the consequences and/or scrutiny of your actions when you post.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I certainly do not have any self esteem issues. I'm just a young 25 year old guy that's very pumped on owning a Porsche and unfortunately I got a bit carried away the other night. I just didn't appreciate being called a moron. Lecture fine. Self admitted what I did wasn't smartest thing. Insults from other Porsche owners. I didn't expect that. Maybe on an mr2 board or a Honda board were there are kids, but from more mature successful adults like most of us, I didn't expect that. Maybe I should just buy a Ferrari. I'm sure Ferrari owners might have more respect for one another. I'm done discussing this...

POST 20Original post

....but the Ferrari guys leave their cars in their garage

POST 21Original post

Come on now, I'm sure whoever said moron only meant it as a colloquialism...kind of like, "if some unlucky accident should befall my youngest son, if some police officer should accidentally shoot him, or if he should hang himself in his cell, or if my son is struck by a bolt of lightning,"...you know, something like that. The point is, you were driving a 'little' fast and irresponsibly and some of the guys on this board just took you to task a bit. No big deal. We all do reckless things once in a while...I mean, hell, I hit 76 in a 65 mph zone last night. Can you believe it? But don't get frustrated, just laugh it off and learn from it.

POST 22Original post

Mature adults wether they are succesful or not do NOT drive a hundred miles an hour in a construction zone no matter what time of day it is. The remainder of your quote speeks volumes of your maturity level.

POST 23Original post

you know though, he does have a point. Maybe the Ferrari guys would be more sympathic . . . they would have gone through the zone at 160 mph and just done away with the rear clip altogether. Run Dieter Run!!!! I mean, afterall, only 4K worth of damage is for girly men . . .

POST 24Original post

Good one Todd. I think Dieter's days of freedom are numbered!

POST 26Original post

Maybe one of you photoshop guys can replace tom hank's face with dieter's face.

POST 27Original post

That picture brings to mind the carbon fiber ....oh forget it.

POST 28Original post

I think you should buy a Ferrari to learn how to drive and be more responsible. Hmm, that's a great idea!

POST 29Original post

The road then turned into 1 lane due to construction. I let him go 1st Hey, that M3 driver handled the speed in the corner without incident. Hell, he even managed to check you out in his rear view mirror while doing so.

POST 30Original post

POST 31Original post

I though Porsche had bred all the tail waggyness out of the 996s and 997s? With the super dupe Stability control, etc. You still can't lift in a corner? Thats a natural response.

POST 32Original post

Ah, the nannies strike again. Always with the wagging fingers. Such hollier the thous are not found in as many numbers elsewhere.

POST 33Original post

Brendan, the point is that you should not even think to apply brakes. You still have a lot of weight back there what with the engine. When you unseat the rear a bit in a turn, say syonara my friend.

POST 34Original post

Where is that damned ann taylor click when you need it?

POST 35Original post

FYI - on the Ferrari board you would get at the very least the same reaction (usually more people bashing you though). I frequent the Fchat board as my dad has a 355 spider & although they drive aggressive or spirited they always bash people for their mistakes when they are posted. It seems to be that the experienced Ferrari drivers don't post this stuff because of legal reasons. On a side note - I have a sport bike & am always very cautious about construction zones & corners in general in the early spring days because of gravel, sand or dust and this has carried over to my c4. I drive aggressive or spirited sometimes but am more careful about where I do that.

POST 36Original post

True. It was very scary when I drove one. I did not feel like it would be a car to drive at its limits. With the engine *somewhere* in between the axles this just simply is not a problem. But reading more of this thread and others it would seem it is - with mid engined cars.

POST 37Original post

Ryan, agreed the you were a little overzealous that night driving - but I wouldn't write off the whole board as people wanting to insult you. Some will feel more strongly against what you did but it ok. In a way on a public forums you expect some good and some bad. Just laugh if off. Other who may tell you to be more cautious are just hoping you don't hurt yourself or something like that. I'm 25 and drive enthusiastically too. On a construction zone however I'd go easy ... more for my safety than public interest. I ride a sport bike so maybe that makes me more cautious ... dunno. But I always find the road surface near construction area unsafe (metal sheets, nails, dirt, gravel, lane shut down abruptly etc). Hope you have many happy miles in your car ! Sid

POST 38Original post

curious if your car had PSM, and if so was it off?

POST 40Original post

Ryan you should be happy it was only 4k( wanna borrow my couch) LOL.. Its ok you made a mistake and I am sure your learned from it, nobody was hurt just your ego.. Don't let it get to you, I think you know it was a stupid thing to do, but myself and I am sure most of the guys here have made worse mistakes . Most have been lucky tho and can see a near miss as an accident . I would chalk this one as " Lesson Learned". Oh yea never lift in the corners

POST 41Original post

remember, like drinking and driving...it's only a crime if you kill someone.

POST 43Original post

I have heard some ignorant stupid comments but that ranks right up there. Sorry "radar" but you have just shown you intelligence (or in this case lack of it). What a jerk off.

POST 44Original post

yeah, that's the point LV, to show how stupid street racing is. Don't be such a f.uckin moron next time. EDIT EDIT EDIT Anthonys (LVdells) post above showed me that I needed to add a disclaimer for the mentally challenged here amongst us. By using hyperbole and humor, Im attempting to show that street racing is a potentially dangerous affair best saved for the track. For the life of me, I never would have thunk anyone here wouldnt be smart enough to catch that. I stand corrected.

POST 45Original post

yes, my naughty mouth proved your point...how very clever you are.

POST 46Original post

Why when a < 100 posts surfer posts a story that goes against the grain of whats normal and by the way illegal, everyone jumps down their throat in a negative way? Everyone should know the post count is not the IQ of the poster, if Steven Hawkins posted here, everyone would tear him a new ******* and never know his intellect surpasses that of the whole of the posters here. Lets give these noobs some advice without calling them morons or other name calling. Rennlist would benefit from nurturing the new posters with advice instead of looking down our noses at these people. Just my 2 cents, anyone want to argue???

POST 47Original post

I agree, that's why I tried the soft approach. We all drive 911's, a car designed for driving fast, so we've all done a little street racing. All we can really do is learn from our mistakes

POST 48Original post

Nice to see a newcomer talking to a regular and respected user like Dell this way. You're a class act, buddy.

POST 49Original post

LET'S CLOSE THIS THREAD HERE WITHOUT HAVING JOHN D. STEP IN. I certainly welcome newbies and I'm sure Ryan will prove himself different in the future to what we have seen so far. Ciao,

POST 50Original post

funny, you missed dells "stupid jerk off" comments I guess respected memebers get to call people names, but newbies can't

POST 51 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I brush things off no problem. I have no plans of writing the whole board off. I'm just done with this post. Its going nowhere. Besides I've beaten myself up the last week enough about it. Not about the money its going to cost but messing my car up that was so perfect. Thanks to all that were respectful. Ryan

POST 52Original post

OKAY OKAY can you now tell us if you car is lowered!!!!

POST 53Original post

ryan, you wouldn't believe the wussy pms LVdell has been sending about your post.

POST 54Original post

Live and learn, thats all you can do in a situation like this.

POST 55 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

vove: Exactly! The car is being lowered as we speak.

POST 56Original post

Ryan, It's not so much in the lowering, more in yourtires, shocks, swaybars, geometry and driverskills. Especially if your car is on worn shocks, lowering wont help. Do the shocks together with springs rather than coming back a few months down the line only having to fork up the money again for labor for changing the shocks and having your allignment done again. Ciao,

POST 58Original post

Welcome Ryan - sorry to hear of your mishap. As you have probably already discovered, street racing stories don't go over well here. undertheradar & others - keep it civil or take it elsewhere. The name calling and personal attacks stop here. Thanks. Marc
