Suspected cause
If the issue is occurring during engagement only then I'm putting money on clutch T.O.
Leading evidence: 'occurring during engagement only' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'occurring during engagement only' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace rms' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
Went for a short drive-stopped for a coffee-drove off and noticed a "whistle/whine"( bearing of some sort) when upshifting. No ongoing noise when in gear/motion. I then stopped and put the car in neutral and no noise. Pushed pedal in- chatter/whining noise-different than upshifting noise. No problems with engaging gears at all-just noises. Any ideas would be welcomed!
Thanks,
Jason
I hear the same "woo" when I upshift in my BMW and I believe it to be the throwout bearing requiring lubrication. Its just a guess since my car has 100K miles on it. My last car did the same thing around the same mileage and once it was lubed the sound went away.
Right before my clutch failed, the pedal became hard to push and made a cacophony of whining and whirring noises when engaging and disengaging the clutch.
It's a lot of work to just do the throw out bearing. And yes you have to take the gear box off. If you have quite a few miles on the car you might need a clutch but that needs to be figured out when you take it apart.
If you can take out the gear box and have the car down till you get parts. That's the cheapest way to do it.
How many miles do you have on the car?
Does the whistle sound like this?--->
Link to throw out thread.
If it does then it's a throw out bearing.
BTW Ed, your new avatar is really cool....
back to the OP and the Q about taking out the gearbox...
wanna know "what else" you "should do" while in there
Hi- didn't think of getting out and listening for a noise...but the noise only occurs with the clutch engaged and upshifting. It has about 48,000 miles on it,so don't think the plate is at all significantly worn-sounds like $$$$ for just doing the throw-out. do anyone think I should change the RMS? It has remained dry since new... so????
48,000 can need a clutch change, and my RMS didn't leak either until I removed the gear box.
If the issue is occurring during engagement only then I'm putting money on clutch T.O. bearing or clutch lever issue with old lever installed. Take it to someone who knows the sounds just to diagnose the issue. They can at least give a opinion on what's going on.
Or if you like internet mechanics. Put a video camera under the gearbox and engage and disengage the clutch then post on youtube.
