Oh, wait, I know, it's because they used metal fittings, an all metal radiator (including the neck) and an expansion tank made out of a quality plastic instead of the same 2 cent plastic used by GM (who doesn't seem to have cooling system issues).

Toolpants or Loren are probably the best people to ask about 99-01 v.

I'd have replaced it myself but they said you have to lower the engine about 3 inches to replace the expansion tank on the 02's.

The funny thing is that back in high-school I had a '77 924 with a leaking expansion tank, I didn't do a chemical analysis on it or anything but damned if the plastic used doesn't look JUST LIKE the one on my 911....that also leaked right along the seam line.

Well, looking at pelicanparts website the 99-00 and the 01-04 use two different tanks with the latter being MUCH bigger...from how it looks and based on my memory of that engine bay, it makes sense to me that you'd need to make a bit more room by lowering the engine some so that you could get it out.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Are the expansion tanks on these an item that typically goes? Or are the new parts tougher or something? While at school dad buys an 02 (the first stick shift car he's bought since I was born), I come home for break, and the next morning the expansion tank cracks (while parked at the dealer lot to buy an air filter and an oil filter). What can I say other than
Car won't be ready until end of day monday. I'd have replaced it myself but they said you have to lower the engine about 3 inches to replace the expansion tank on the 02's.
BMW seems to be the same way (from personal experience) and I wouldn't doubt MB is too. Why is it that my 1985 Mercedes hasn't didn't need any cooling system work from when we bought it new until it was 19 (needed a water pump seal) and hasn't needed any since? Oh, wait, I know, it's because they used metal fittings, an all metal radiator (including the neck) and an expansion tank made out of a quality plastic instead of the same 2 cent plastic used by GM (who doesn't seem to have cooling system issues). You would think that as bad as the german car expansion tanks/radiator necks/coolant hoses are there would be somebody making good aftermarket parts.
Man, I come home for easter break and the new to us car will be in working condition for a total of 1 day of my being here (friday night and monday night). Wundebar. They just don't make them like they used to.

Yes, and you can get pregnant from sitting on a toilet seat as well!
Here are the DIY instructions for a 996. It is about an hour job for all years, and no Virginia, you do not have to drop the engine.
Are you sure the 02+ are no different? He was saying they made the tank bigger in 02 and that you can't quite get it out without lowering the engine a bit. If they were lying about that I'm pretty pissed because I could have easily pulled it but took their word for it. Would have had the car back on the road today. Looks like the Porsche section of HBL is just as big a bunch of liars as the MB section if You're right OE.

I really don't think they would lie about it anways since it's under warranty. I mean, I know they still get paid, but I'm sure they wouldn't want to say it's harder than it is if it's warranty work and they plan on billing Porsche for 4 labor hours. (yes I do know that book hours and real life hours have no relation to each other with German cars).
Toolpants or Loren are probably the best people to ask about 99-01 v. 02-04 differences and the ability to change the tank without dropping the engine. Post that specific question on Renntech and I am sure you will get the answer within 1/2 a day.
Mine went within about 2 months of buying the car also (one of those "what have I just gotten into" moments).

Is it really that hard to make an expansion tank that doesn't leak?
Mercedes was able to do it in 1985 so I don't think it's hard, it just costs an extra 17 cents, and since Porsche's are so cheap there is no way they could afford to spend 17 cents right? The problem is their is no more pride in manufacturing, only dollars. When Mercedes made the 600 limo, each one sold was a loss for the company, but they did it to have the pride of knowing they made the world's best limo.

This is old news for us Boxster owners, and our plastic tank is not directly exposed to the heat of the engine compartment like a 996, since it is in the rear trunk on a Boxster.
The plastic tanks on both models have not proven reliable. Time for a metal tank, or a company other than Geiger to make a plastic tank.
